Patrick Mahomes: Ankle is “definitely better” than last week

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes missed time against the Jaguars in the divisional round after suffering an ankle injury, but he returned in the second half and played the entire way in the AFC Championship Game against the Bengals.

Mahomes scrambled for a first down late in that game and picked up 15 more yards to set up the game-winning field goal when Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai hit him out of bounds. Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox referenced that play on Monday night when he was asked if he thinks Mahomes will be an easier target for Eagles defenders in Super Bowl LVII.

“Did you not see him late in the game run the ball? He looked healthy to me,” Cox said.

Mahomes may not be completely healthy, but he isn’t playing up the severity of his injury. Mahomes said from his podium on Super Bowl Opening Night that the ankle is “definitely better” than it was last week and that should have Cox and all the rest of the Eagles defenders on their toes come Sunday.

  1. I don’t care if it’s better than it was last week. I want to know if he’s 100%. If he’s 100%, they should win. If not, they should lose. Maybe he was 70% last week and now he’s 80%. That’s close, but no cigar.

  2. I’m sure it is but I’m also sure it’s not close to 100%. I’ve had that injury a couple times, running in a straight line isn’t a problem but everything else will be

  3. Saw him walking off the plane on the steep steps…

Looked like it wasn’t bothering him at all.

  4. He was never injured. He was hurt with a stinger, but that was weeks ago at this point. There’s zero doubt in my mind that he’s 100%. Any signs to the contrary are for the cameras.

  5. I know that the NFL won`t care or even notice but for the first time in 49 years i`m not even watching the Super Bowl. The officiating was so bad the whole season the whole thing deserves an asterisk. Their both great teams but i watched so many games be decided by calls and non calls that i lost interest. I hope they get it fixed before they become like the NBA where i went from 1/2 season tickets to not watching a full game in over 10 years. I`m getting too old to waste 3 hours watching a game that isn`t decided by the players. I rented a cabin in Tennessee and not falling for the hype for the first time since i watched my 1st Super Bowl. Enough with part time refs with outside interests deciding games!

  6. Someday I’ll get to tell my grandkids that I got to bet on Patrick Mahomes as an underdog in the Super Bowl. They won’t believe it.

  7. To all the Mahomes haters, look at the bright side. You can enjoy a nice, stress free Super Bowl experience since your team’s not in it.

  8. its the superbowl, nobody’s 100%. he’s a dog, a ton of people think he’s a finesse player because he’s a freaking wizard but 15 is a ball player. Some of his best moments come with contact.

Hate all you want, and you’re gonna, because i hated watching Brady for decades as an opposing fan. But your hate just validates his greatness. If he was average you wouldn’t actively spend energy naysaying.

  9. Carl Cheffers is the lead ref for the SB. His crew threw the most flags of any NFL crew during the season … and it wasn’t particularly close. He’ll only have one ref from his crew on the field in Glendale, but look for plenty of flags nonetheless … far too many. It will affect the game negatively. It was foolish for the NFL to choose this guy … he tries to control the game rather than let the teams determine the outcome. Cheffers will get more facetime on TV than any player or coach on Sunday. It’s a real shame.

He can’t be 100% in a few weeks, especially after playing on it. It’s a 6-8 week healing process, if not surgery. Forget overall percentage, because he can obviously still sling it. Let’s say his mobility was 30-40% of normal in the AFCCG. I would bet it’s around 60%-70% now and depending on when he uses it in the game, could decline throughout the game.

I think he will want to stay in the pocket as much as he can early in the game so is as close to full capacity as possible in the 4th when it counts. As opposed to a few plays where he can run it like last game maybe he could do that for a quarter now if needed.

We will have to see how the Philly OL holds up. They’ve been pretty great thus far.

This whole game comes down to the trenches to me. Can Philly get a pass rush and can KC stop the run and not be dominated by the Philly OL. That seems like the game. Mahomes could win easy if he’s well protected and KC stops the run.

All this is starting to sound like a built in excuse.

I feel like Mahomes has something to prove in this game. In the Super Bowl against SF he had a 78.1 rating and against TB he had 52.3 rating. He got the job done against SF and he had no OL against Tampa, so I get it, but I am sure he badly wants to play well in this game. He has quite a bit of pressure.

I’m not sure there are many Mahomes haters. Lots of people that don’t want KC to win, but I think most people can see Mahomes is a great person and great player and may still want him to lose.

The Eagles are better on both lines of scrimmage which is big. The Chiefs passing game makes it easier to make up long yardage situations than the Eagles run game. That is why Carl Cheffers is refereeing the game. It will be a close game!

  15. We’ll see how that ankle is when the vaunted Eagles pass rush gets to work. Gonna be a very long game for Mahomes
