Tom Brady thinks he can still play, but he says “now’s the time” to stop

Retired (for the second time) quarterback Tom Brady hasn’t entirely and unequivocally slammed the door on playing again. On the latest episode of his Let’s Go! podcast, Brady made it clear that he believes he can still play.

“There’s always gonna be a part [of me] that wants to play and a part of me that, you know, feels like I can play,” Brady said. “I think there’s just a decision to know that it’s the right time. So I think for me it’s more of just, it’s gonna end at some point, and I think now’s the time. And it’s not that I can’t do it. It’s not that I wouldn’t want to do it. It’s not that I wouldn’t be excited to play. I love playing football. I’ve loved playing football since I was a kid on the street on Portola Drive. So I think it’s just a decision that it’s time to do other things.”

Jim Gray then reminded Brady that he once said he’ll retire when he sucks, and that he doesn’t suck.

“That’s true,” Brady said. “I did say that. And I meant it at the time. That was so long ago. I missed a few things in the meantime and certainly just have loved every experience that I’ve had doing it and doesn’t always go right, and I always tell this to my kids a lot, you know, it’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s about the process of trying to get the most out of yourself. And if you feel like you’ve done it then there’s a lot to be gained from it. And if you feel like you cheated that, then you feel like you’ve cheated yourself. And I think I’ve always wanted to maximize my ability as a player and now I get to maximize my ability in life as a person and as a human and as a man and as a father and as a son and as a brother and as a friend and as a teammate to different things going forward. So there’s a lot of things to be excited about.”

That’s fine, and it makes sense. And he may mean it, the same way he meant, “I’ll retire when I suck.”

No one knows how he’ll feel as the season approaches. No one, including Tom Brady himself. That’s why it’s impossible to rule out anything.

Yes, he said in December that, the next time he retires, it will be for good. And, again, he may have meant it when he said it. We’ll see whether it sticks.

  1. I think he may be trying to mend fences with his ex-wife. That’s at least what it seems on the outside. It may be a bit too late for that but you can’t fault the guy for trying. As far as having something in the tank, him along with Rodgers, had down years by their measurements. But if you take a look at just the stats, they’re still better than over half the league. He still has it. This may be him throwing in the white flag due to what his family says and the outlook of the Bucs. Just look around the league and you can see how much better he is than a lot of these QBs. The Pats, Jets, Titans, Panthers, Steelers, Browns, Broncos, Cardinals, Rams, Texans, Raiders, Falcons, Giants, and Saints would’ve all fared better with him on the roster. Then you can throw in the availability factor and count the Dolphins and Ravens as well. Not many teams have a better option than a 45yr old QB. That either says something about his skills or the lack of talent on the listed teams.

  2. 733 pass attempts.
    490 completions.
    Only 9 interceptions.

Yeah. Brady can still play NFL QB at a high level. Go out on a high note!

  3. He’s still good enough, he could play somewhere and be effective doing it. That said, I think he picked a good time to retire. It’s better to go out with something in the tank, rather than hanging around a year too long.

  4. He doesn’t suck compared to your average QB, but he sucks compared to Tom Brady. This Tom Brady can’t make the plays the old Tom Brady could make. He can still make plays, but not with the same frequency that he’s used to. Those are the plays that took you to super bowls. Winning was fun. It was even fun getting your body beat up when you were winning. Losing is no fun. Losing and getting your body beat up is nuts.

  5. If you took the number off the jersey and graded his play this year, all of you hypocries would say whoever that QB is, he sucks big time. You’ve excoriated QBs who have done much better. But that’s the problem with most of you, you assess a player’s play based on how you feel about him. Take the emotion out of it. Instead of giving me a bunch of thumbs down, defend your case that Brady was good this year. You can’t. And don’t give me a bunch of compiler stats. If you throw the most passes, you’re more than likely to have the most completions, duh. Andy Dalton had a better completion percentage and Justin Fields had a better QBR. As you guys always say, let that sink in…laughable. A sub .500 record in the worst division in football and one and done in the playoffs. And you guys destroy playoff losers. Well, when it suits your case. Anyway, Brady retired at exactly the right time. Look at the Super Bowl. There is a new type of QB that will dominate this league, as I told you 4 years ago, it’s coming and it’s not Brady’s style of play. Brady is the Goat, but at some point, all goats have to be put out to pasture.

  6. Dad, can you drive me and my friends to my soccer game?
Breaking news: Tom Brady returns to Tampa for one final season.

  7. He’s undoubtedly been a great player , however nowadays the team has to be set up entirely to suit him. His skills have diminished and he is now a middle of the road QB.
His ego seems to prevent him from letting go , and constantly seeking attention.
He needs to get out while he is in one piece.

  8. It sounds like we just heard the words of a champion. Tom Brady is walking away while he can still walk away.

  9. This guy cant keep his mouth shut durring superbowl week.
All attention is supposed to be on KC and Philli

  10. Sounds like he has already started to second guess himself. If the right team makes him an offer and he thinks they could win with him at quarterback, I think he will play another two years.

  11. Two things: yes Tom, you did suck last year. And you will think you could still play when you are 60. By the way, glad to hear you’re not on the airwaves til 2024.

  12. He absolutely can still play. And he doesn’t “suck” yet. And he should absolutely stay retired. It will be a struggle for him, I don’t think he knows how to be anything but Tom Brady, NFL QB. But it’s time to start learning and put the same amount of effort into other things rather then football.

  13. Unless Gronk comes out of retirement, Brady will finish with another losing season and get embarrassed in the playoffs.

  14. Just go away already. Dude is going to go through serious withdrawal once the press isn’t running to him every five seconds. Try to take a cue from Joe Montana. Just walked away almost 30 years ago, and was quiet from the get-go until he surfaced on the Guinness ads recently (which are funny, btw, and play off generational differences – and the fact that he stays under the radar – if you haven’t seen them)

  15. Hey everybody, look at me! Look at me! Look at me!

Cmon everyone, over here! I’m Tom Brady! Look at me!

    Go away dude.

It’s funny that he mentioned cheating himself. I guess he felt like he couldn’t get the most out of himself if he didn’t cheat. So ultimately, his reason for cheating was to not cheat himself. Classic cheater.

  16. Not surprised that Brady called it quits after this season.
To say that this team was unmotivated is a huge understatement. When the player with the most fire to win is 45 years old, you know that team was going to be in trouble.
For a guy who meticulously prepares his body for the rigours of football, seeing your starting running back show up in camp overweight, isn’t exactly providing reinforcement for that drive and attitude to excel.

He’s retired now, so you won’t be seeing him play. As for last year, I think it’s more like a division win and made the playoffs. Many teams think that’s pretty good and it’s certainly far from embarrassing.

  18. He can’t just decide to play. He would have to train every day and sleep by 8 pm to be ready for training camp. He’s not going to be doing that. He’s movin’ on.

    Insufferable

    ———-

Why is it insufferable to be highly sought after for an interview and answer questions? Appreciate what this guy accomplished. It probably won’t be done again in our lifetimes

  20. Tom Brady should have retired when he won the Super Bawl with Tampa, it been down a steep hill ever since!

  21. Can you imagine what a horrible grind 2022 must have been for him ? Lost his marriage, the BUCS went south, the offense went to hell. The thought MAY have crossed his mind that ” who needs this?” will the season EVER end”?!!! Lol

  22. He thinks he can still play. Who thinks it’s only a matter of time before he unretires? Again? (Why doesn’t he just go away and leave us in peace? I’m so sick of Brady.)

  23. I think the Cowboy game was an eye-opener for him. At home in the playoffs against what they certainly thought was a beatable opponent and he just couldn’t bring it. That’s what happens to aging players: Their highs are still good but they have games where they just never can get on track. And you can’t control when those games happen and they become more numerous the more time that goes by.

  24. I really enjoyed 2022 Brady……

Wish he had decided to keep playing.

Two division wins and another playoff win is a steep decline? At least 2/3 of the league would love that.

He can still play, but he’s also retired for good. Both things are true. Unfortunately for the folks that are annoyed by Brady he’s only going to be in the media more and more over the next 5 years. Before he was only playing, now he’s going to be every between now and the HOF induction.

  27. He is reminding me of Ali. He will come back again bc he has new religious beliefs. Izzy izkowitz at QB. Right there!

Those would be career numbers for Max Jones. Bob Kraft has regrets

He’ll be back. He won’t be able to live without it.

    —————

Last season Brady had the most completions, yards and TD passes while being runner up for the MVP. Such a downhill season!

  31. All these haters would love the opportunity to walk one day in tom Brady’s shoes. The guy has a great life behind him and another great life ahead of him.

  32. At 45 he’s still the best qb in the league by far but it’s time, he’s taken more hits than any other qb. He walks away rather than limp away like so many of the current crop who don’t know how to train and have a slow release plus poor judgement.
