Brian Flores will be heading to Minnesota to run the defense.

Flores has accepted the Vikings’ offer to become their new defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports.

Although Flores had been considered a strong candidate for the Cardinals’ head-coaching job, that he would take a defensive coordinator job suggests he has learned he wasn’t going to get the top job in Arizona.

Flores spent the last year as the Steelers’ senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach. He was head coach of the Dolphins from 2019 to 2021, and after he was fired by the Dolphins, he sued the NFL over the impact on its employment policies on minority head coaches. That lawsuit is ongoing.

The Vikings have been looking for a new defensive coordinator since they fired Ed Donatell after the season.

  1. Best educated guess is he was informed by the Cardinals they’d be hiring another finalist, just hasn’t been officially announced yet

  2. Ohhh SNAP! We got our man. Where are all the people that been chirping and chirping and chirping that Flores wouldn’t take the D Coordinator position with the Vikes????

  3. You know, Flores may have not been the best head coach, but I’m glad the NFL didn’t disappear him.
It shows that having Tomlin and Mensah in positions of power work in generally guiding hiring to the right arc.
Art Shell, Ray Rhodes, Herm Williams, and Brian Flores may not have been great head coaches, but what it took to get there was arduous and the hook was alway quick.
Really opened my eyes going Ain’t Too Proud to Beg; minorities and women have a way tougher slog through life than all of us, and our lives aren’t easy!
Hope the NFL and Flores can come to an understanding, and that Flores gets to reach his potential!
You know Belichick, Fisher, Reid, Vermeil, Carroll, et al got second chances.

  4. Glad to hear they were able to get their top candidate and I think he should be able to do a great job.

An added bonus, which seems a little crass but that’s the way the NFL wants it: When he does get hired away to be a head coach, the Vikings will get two third-round picks if he’s with the team for two years. With the state of the defense now, it should be at least two years before Flores is a head coach candidate again.

  5. No one wants the HC job in Arizona as long as Murray is their QB… and I don’t blame them. P
I heard even Lovie Smith turned them down…

  6. Excellent choice!! If anyone can turn the Viking defense around, it’s Mr. Flores. He’s better off in Minnesota as Arizona teams never amount to much more than playoff fodder.

  7. Great hire. He’s a great D coach, but is going to need some help from the GM on recruitment.

  8. Arizona must know which way they are going at HC, likely will be announced within the next couple of days I’d guess , likely lining up schedules to announce it.

  9. Vikings went from the worst defensive coach to the most race baiting coach.. hmmm careful what wish for Wilfs. Flores has bitting a few hands that feed him using the race baiting lawsuit. Wonder why he never got that Head Coaching Job.

  10. The NFC North is going to be very competitive. At this point, the Packers are likely finishing 3rd again whether or not they keep Rodgers

  11. Flores is so overrated ots actually laughable. BB ran the defense when he was in NE and Miami D was not all that spectacular when he was head coach. For whatever reason when your name is constantly in the media people think it means he is that good. They will find out quickly that the players dislike him and he will never get the best out of them. Lions will win the division next season

  12. Good Hire but don’t expect to much. If you don’t have the talent you don’t have the talent. Flores won’t help you there.

  13. Nice. Flores will have young DBacks Cine,Booth, Evans and Dantzler coming off injury-Smith and Hunter to (hopefully) ONLY rush the QB and a blueprint of what NOT to do (everything Donatell did last year).

And we know Flores can coach. Let’s SKOL!!!

  14. Flores better hope the Vikings upgrade the talent on D or he’s in for a long season…..
I’m in a no way a supporter of Donatell, but he didn’t have much to work with.

  15. Is he a 3-4 or 4-3 coach. Personnel is what got Donatell fired.

  16. Excellent choice!! If anyone can turn the Viking defense around, it’s Mr. Flores.

Can't disagree with the sentiment….but ultimately you need players to round the corner.

  17. The DC jobs were getting filled fast. I guess he figured he’d better grab one before they were all gone.

  18. Hate to burst your bubble Vikings fans, but Flores was defensive coordinator in New England for only 1 year, 2018. During that year his defense ranked 21st in the league in yards over game at 359.1, they ranked 7th in the league in points per game at 20.3. I wouldn’t say he was the best defensive coordinator hands down, in fact I would say those stats make him slightly above average, but nothing special. Also, he did have much better players on the Patriots than he will have this year on the Vikings. Best not to hope for miracles. Trying to help you all keep it real and not crown yourselves off-season champs again.

He was outstanding as a DC in New England.

He was never a DC in New England.

  20. Squeaky wheel gets the oil. And this diversity is screaming.

The odell Beckham of the coaching

That’s not really true. Flores didn’t coach the miami D right away but after he started calling the plays the D went from historically bad to a top 10 Defense.

  22. He’s better off in Minnesota as Arizona teams never amount to much more than playoff fodder.

    …………………………………

Yes…. because Minnesota has STEAM ROLLED through the playoffs the past 2 decades…

All we heard from the Vikings fans is that Vic Fangio was going there. So you got the bridesmaid, big deal. Hope your players want to play more than one position.

  24. Flores is riding on BB’s back for his whole defensive record. He himself has done nothing outside of New England other than prove he cannot get along with his players and has an attitude issue.

  25. Have any Packers fans declared that the Vikings fans have declared they will win the SB now? Because Packers fans like to say stuff like that.

Nobody in the football world, except for maybe a couple people in Miami, are saying anything like this at all.

And I can't disagree with your statement. But, you also need to use your players correctly. The two examples of where Donatell failed miserably was not using Hunter in a 3 point stance to always rush the QB (he literally had Hunter on coverage sometimes), and using Harrison Smith as a 25 yards deep safety over the middle on almost every play. Just terrible use of most of the players he had. It was the very definition of square peg into round hole mentality. And that's why he was fired.

  28. Now you have two coaches who never called their own plays or schemes, O’Connell and Flores. Each rode the coattails of McVay and Belicheck respectively. I knew O’Connell wasn’t very good when he went for it on 4th and 1 at his own 35 early in the Lions game and got stuffed with a horrible play call. That gave incredible field position, as well as momentum, to Detroit when the game was pretty even. I expect more silly calls from Flores, maybe blitzing Goff on a 3rd and long and leaving Jameson Williams single covered by the slow Cameron Dantzler. Chark burnt him this past season, and Jameson is even faster.

Exactly! Hunter had 10 1/2 sacks while not even being used correctly. And Smith? Well, if you were watching on tv you didn’t even know he was out there, as he was 25 yards deep in center field, off screen, and back peddling.

  30. In the end, with jobs drying up, Brian Flores didn’t really have much of a choice but to return to Minnesota’s job offer.
Unfortunately, this hire simply doesn’t mesh well with the Viking’s wheelhouse of scapegoating assistants to cover up for a poorly run organization.
This hire will end up with regrets. Guaranteed.

    +++++
Why would they? It’s been 46 years since they even played in one…. and the current QB has one playoff victory. We aren’t delusional.

  32. Lions finished over 500 for the first time in what……..a century? And lion fans are coming out of the woodwork, or they could be bandwagon packer fans jumping ship.
