Vikings officially name Brian Flores defensive coordinator

When Brian Flores filed a landmark lawsuit last year against the NFL and multiple teams for decades of racial discrimination, he surely knew he may have been sacrificing his coaching career.

He didn’t.

Last year, the Steelers made a space for him on the defensive side of the ball, recognizing his value as an instructor, motivator, and leader. This year, the Vikings hired Flores to run the team’s entire defense.

The Vikings have officially announced the arrival of Flores.

The gestures from both Pittsburgh and Minnesota cut against the natural inclination, wrong as it would be, to shun someone who dared to challenge Big Shield. And Flores remained in the mix to be the next head coach of the Cardinals; either he knew he wasn’t getting the job or he decided he didn’t want it.

Or maybe he decided to take the bird in the hand in Minnesota, in lieu of waiting to see whether the Cardinals would hire him. This way, he takes the next step toward becoming a head coach again.

It won’t be easy. The Minnesota defense was not good in 2022. Despite the team’s 13-4 record, they allowed more points than they scored.

Flores parlayed his work with the New England defense into the head-coaching job in Miami. In his first season as the defensive play-caller, the Patriots won Super Bowl LIII, limiting the high-powered Rams offense to three points.

  1. I sure hope the Vikings can put together enough personnel to make it work for him. If he can work wonders and the offense returns with the same vigor they showed this year, I can see the Vikings finally return to the big game. Go get em coach and you’ll have your choice of head coaching jobs next year.

  2. Good for Flo. He should do well in Minnesota as the DC.

God help the team that hires him to be a Head Coach.

  3. I like this hire by the Vikings. SKOL The Cardinals are a mess and might be looking for a head coach for some time.

  4. Winning equals dollars in the pockets. And dollars in the pockets above all else. And he can help the Vikings win. Good hire.

  5. Great hire, but if he turns that lousy D around, unfortunately he’ll be gone next year to be a head coach.

He’ll be here for a couple-two-three years. 10-7 this coming season, maybe 11-6, with a rebuilt D backfield, a defense in the top 20, a wild card win, and an amusing false narrative about a “late season collapse.” In 2024, if Cousins holds it together and learns to really relax his shoulders, the start of something special.

  7. Well unlike others, I have no idea who well he will do but from where he is starting, everything is up. Hard to do worst than last again.

  8. In the end, with jobs drying up, Brian Flores didn’t really have much of a choice but to return to Minnesota’s job offer.
Unfortunately, this hire simply doesn’t mesh well with the Viking’s wheelhouse of scapegoating assistants to cover up for a poorly run organization.
This hire will end up with litigation and regrets. Guaranteed.

  9. Worst hire of the offseason. Guy is a clubhouse cancer. Minnesota can say goodbye to the playoffs for the next few years at least.

  10. One thing for sure, he’s better than Joe Barry who has 7 first rounders to coach, 8-9🤣

Yeah I’m thinking no chance that Flores made this choice. The above is nice way to put it but Flores is not the candidate Kafka or Lou Anarumo are.

  12. One thing for sure, Viking Fan will never stop comparing against the Green Bay Packers.

  13. As much as Flores’ personality didn’t work in Miami as a head coach, his feel for the game defensively was as good as any coach I’ve ever seen in South Florida and that includes Jimmie Johnson. I’m not familiar with the personal in Minnesota, but the cornerbacks need to play man coverage and the safeties need to be versatile. Best of luck. He will have a lot of influence on personal decisions on his side of the ball this off-season.

  14. Funny . . . Joe Barry’s D was better than the awful unit our purple helmets fielded last season.
