The 49ers have decided to go with an external candidate to be their next defensive coordinator.

San Francisco will hire Steve Wilks for the position, according to NFL Media.

Wilks served as the Panthers interim head coach after Matt Rhule was fired during the 2022 season, compiling a 6-6 record with the club.

The 49ers needed a new defensive coordinator after DeMeco Ryans departed the organization to become the Texans head coach.

Wilks has previously run a 4-3 base defense, which provides some continuity with what the 49ers were running before. Head coach Kyle Shanahan previously said he wanted to keep a lot of things similar for 2023 with whoever became the team’s next DC.

Wilks spent much of his career as a defensive backs coach, serving in that role for the Bears and Chargers before initially going to the Panthers in 2012. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2017. The Cardinals hired him to be their head coach in 2018 and he was fired after one season.

Wilks also served as the Browns defensive coordinator in 2019 and Mizzou’s defensive coordinator in 2021 before going back to the Panthers as their defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach in 2022.

The last two 49ers defensive coordinators — Robert Saleh and Ryans — have both left the organization to become head coaches.

  1. The drafting by Lynch is what has made the niner defense so good.
Not to take away from Bob Saleh or Demeeco Ryans… But it’s the players not the d coordinator

  2. This is a great hire who takes over a pretty good defensive roster. One thing that jumps out to me is his ability to beat teams even when they had a better roster. He is a tactician and good leader.

  3. I think Wilks strong points are development and growth of players which we need for depth, and the development of DB’s.
The key is to implement or maintain a defense where the players can play fast and instinctive, relentlessly attacking and quickly reacting. If he can limit the thinking this will be a good defense.
Now if he comes in and tries to be an X’s and O’s Wizard and has the players over complicating things, thinking too much and hesitating….then we’ll have problems. And this is the mistake that most external D Coordinators make,

I like the hire and predict within two years Carolina will be asking permission to speak with Wilks, and he’ll return to Carolina with a hero’s welcome, and we’ll have two more 3 round compensatory picks and will be looking for another DC to replace Wilks.. Some Head Coaches greatness is measured by championship rings, others by legacy. I believe Kyle Shanahan’s a great coach became of his legacy of coaches that he develops and Wilks will be another one. Kyle is going to show him the 49er/Shanahan way.

  4. Great choice by the Niners. They have been hitting home runs with their choices for Defensive Coordinators.

  5. I’m looking for the Niners to take a couple of steps back next season. The QB situation is unsettled, considerable downgrade at DC, plus that ugly loss in Philly is the type of game that can set an organization back.

So, 11-6? I’m ok with that.

  7. Dick LeBeau and Dom Capers should be livid that they was not interviewed for the job. I see a trend happening and is does not reflect true diversity.

  8. Charlotte native here.
Wilks is a d@mn good coach. Everybody is judging him based on his one year at the Cardinals. However, it was a “trap” that year and I don’t think any coach would have succeeded under those conditions.
A descent offensive coordinator would have set the Panther’s up next year because the players bought in.
So happy that he’s getting the right set-up, just like CMC.

  9. Congrats to Tepper for having the steel to ignore the ‘woke’ pressure in the NFL. Wilkes is a future 3rd round compensatory pick for the 9ers – a gentle reminder possibly sent by Park Ave. It would be difficult for anyone to mess up the 9ers defensive performance with their roster.

  10. The 49ers Defensive Coordinators are not good simply because the Niners have a great defense. The Niners have a great defense because they hire the right coordinators and drafted the right players.

Proof of that is Salah as HC to the Jets and DeMeco Ryans as HC to the Texans. Shanahan and Lynch are great at hiring talent.

So, the niners hired a guy who’s not a good D coordinator so that their defense can take a step back so that they can fool another team to hire him as a head coach so that they can get a comp 3rd round pick.

Got it! Only a rams fan can be this convoluted lol

  12. Cool. The 49ers will get more draft picks when Wilks get a head coaching job. The 49ers have by far the most talented defensive players in the league. Whoever coaches them will become a head coach, just like all Tom Brady’s coordinators in New England became head coaches.

  13. Excellent move. Excellent. With Wilks primary strength being noted for the back-end of defenses, this is a fantastic move. Just what was needed.

  14. He’ll fit in nicely with the culture in Santa Clara having been part of a NFC Championship but losing in the SB. His 9-19 head coaching record should also not be a threat to Shanahan’s ego and his .531 record. Also, his experience in Carolina taking over as interim coach will really be useful when Shanahan is fired next year after they get off to a poor start because of their injured QB situation. Nice hire!
