Nick Sirianni: I don’t apologize for having fun, I do this because I love it

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has taken some criticism for his boisterous celebrations on the sideline this season, but Sirianni doesn’t care.

Sirianni said at a Super Bowl media appearance that he’s glad to be known as a coach whose approach to the game is emotional, rather than detached.

“I don’t apologize for having fun,” Sirianni said, via the Washington Post. “This is too hard not to have fun, and I do this because I love it. I chose this profession because I love it. It is a little bit blown out of proportion with all of those things. I loved playing football, and I love coaching it. I’m not going to hide my emotions at any point.”

Having Sirianni as coach has been plenty fun for the Eagles and their fans, and Super Bowl Sunday may be the most fun day yet.

  1. It’s not the fun part that gets people upset. It’s the gloating. Most coaches are careful to avoid that because they know you’re not on top forever.

  2. Celebrating and gloating aren’t the same thing. Sirianni doesn’t gloat or taunt. His celebrations — and there have only been one or two — haven’t been at the expense of the other team. No fingerpointing, no “in your face, loser!” displays.

I think what bugs people about him is their own expectation that coaches are supposed to be reserved on the sidelines.

  3. The question is, do players love playing for a coach, or do they tolerate him, because the team wins or they’re getting paid?
Sirianni and Andy, the former, Bellichek, the latter.

  4. Get used to it Nick. Most of us haven’t had the kind of success you’re having. When you’re on top, they put a big target on your back, and all the losers get to take a shot at you. Bill Belichick has won six Super Bowls and look at all the hate thrown in his direction. Don’t change a thing. Just keep winning and enjoying life. Hopefully your joy is contagious.

  5. Another thought: this wouldn’t even be a thing were it not for one celebration where he looked into the camera, smiled, nodded his head vigorously, shimmied, and made Julian Love mad in the process.

  6. I guess I’m an old timer by now, but when I grew up watching football players made great plays, maybe did a fist pump, handed the ball to the referee and went back to the huddle. No full team running down the entire length of the field to celebrate a turnover where nobody made a great play, no lengthy celebration for a simple special teams tackle, no snow angels for getting a sack where nobody blocked you. The crazy thing is this happens regardless of the score. Seeing guys celebrate when their team is down by 20 is pathetic.

I get celebrating, but players now showboat for personal attention. It was just a matter of time until we would have a coach do the same. I guess when you win you can do whatever you want but as someone mentioned in a previous post, you’re never on top forever.

  7. What people don’t seem to get is that, for a lot of us fans, trash talk isn’t fun. It’s worthless and takes away from what makes the game fun.

  8. He’s like a more fun Jim Harbaugh. Obviously tomorrow I hope he doesn’t have a lot of fun, but it is nice every once in a while to see a coach with some actual character.

You must mean a coach with personality. To each his own on that but what he does on the sideline is the opposite of showing character. He may be a character, but that’s a very different thing and not something any of the great coaches would ever want to be called.

You beat Daniel Jones and Josh Johnson. Impressive.

His team is in the super bowl. Impressive.

  11. Not my style and it is going to hurt when Howie doesn’t have the team stocked like it is now because of the cap.
