Eagles have plenty of impending free agents

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will eventually have to balance his desire to maximize his compensation with his desire to maximize his ability to win. His stellar 2022 season has increased his value dramatically, and the Eagles are now only one season away from playing the franchise-tag dance with Hurts.

Meanwhile, the Eagles are only one season removed from not being completely sold on Hurts as the present and the future. They’d had a perpetual wandering eye at the position. Now, they shouldn’t be looking at anything other than a long-term deal for Hurts.

Whatever they do with Hurts, they’ll surely be saying farewell to several free agents. Twenty Eagles players have expired contracts, including running back Miles Sanders, cornerback James Bradberry, linebacker Kyzer White, linebacker T.J. Edwards, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, safety Marcus Epps, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, defensive tackle Linval Joseph, and offensive lineman Isaas Seumalo.

Defensive end Robert Quinn, running back Boston Scott, and quarterback Gardner Minshew also are able to walk away.

So there’s plenty of work to be done by the Eagles this offseason, from hiring new coordinators to figuring out who to keep to finding a way to strike a long-term deal with the most important player on the roster.

  1. Hurts needs a contract, too, so Roseman failed. He went all in and blew it. This doesn’t even count the age and pricing of Cox, Quinn and Graham on the DL either. And, Suh is cooked.

So, that’s 4 starters with age who disappeared in the SB and Darius Slay’s mediocre play with a 26 million dollar cap hit.

I am chuckling at all these Eagles fans claiming Roseman is so great.

  2. More concerning is the loss of the DC and OC, and that may not seem so huge, but Sirianni is not considered an elite coach (yet, he could in the future, cant say for sure), so the loss of consistency in those positions, combined with some big free agents leaving and maybe players retiring (kelce?) it will be a tough road moving forward, but they are still poised to vie for the division again, they will still be the prohibitive faves to win the NFCE, but 1 seed next year? NO, i dont think so.

  3. Of the Eagles available free agents, the only two they should aggressively try to retain are CJ Gardner-Johnson and TJ Edwards. And even if Edwards leaves, the Eagles have Nakobe Dean ready to step in. The Eagles also have two first round picks to restock starting rolls, have a Kelce clone in Cam Jurgens ready to roll at center (and probably guard if Kelce stays and Seaumalo leaves) and remain the class of the NFC since they have the best QB in the conference. The future remains bright.

  4. So like Jerry said, Eagles took their shot and missed. Now, like the Rams before them, they pay the piper.

It was only going to be worth the approach if they won it all. The chokejob will likely resonate for years to come.

I love how the media wants to praise certain teams as they totally ignore the salary cap and what it means.

Philly is loaded with old players like Tampa and bad contracts. And, yes, getting coaches poached off the staff will hurt. NE is still sort of recovering from a mass poach job the last few years.

Stability is definitely important both with coaches and players.

  6. Hurts is fine if all you’re looking for is a running back slash quarterback; could use a receiver strong enough to hold onto a sideline pass and can’t say the defence was terribly impressive in the second half so a rebuild is needed there, too;

  7. The problem here is Howie can’t draft. This year he hit on Trades and Free agents so he was able to build a good squad while not having to pay a QB real money.

So after Hurts gets a big deal there isn’t going to be Money to cover his bad drafting with Trades and FA signings.

Hopefully he delegates out the drafting to someone who knows how to do it, but with his massive ego it’s unlikely.

The way he was dancing in the suite reminded me of Arthur Blank in SB 51.

Like most things Jerry says, this isn’t even close to reality.

  10. I’m pretty sure they have two 1st round picks this year, including one in the top 10, so I’m not sure how they’re being compared to last year’s Rams, who don’t have any early picks until something like 2035. If I were them, I’d prioritize signing Gardner-Johnson and drafting a stud D-lineman. The success of their running game is based on the O-line more than anything else, so if Sanders goes because he wants a big contract, they can plug in Gainwell, Scott (who won’t cost much), and maybe draft or acquire someone through free agency.

I’m not an Eagles fan, so I have no dog in this fight. But this is a ridiculous statement.

Of the 11 starters on the Eagles offense in the Super Bowl, 11 were drafted by the Eagles. That is an unheard of success rate.

False statement: AJ Brown was a trade.

Eagles have a lot of work to do. Once they give Hurts a big contract then it becomes harder

  13. Eagles fan here. Think the comments haven’t come from an Eagles fan yet, so do have a bit of a different perspective. I have no issue with anything Howie did for this year’s squad. Got to a Super Bowl. Lost to a real good team. Had a shot, and probably should’ve won. But bad punt, punt coverage and a fumble was the difference.

    Here’s my take:

Miles Sanders – gone. Eagles will not pay him the $24-30m he will get. They will bring back Scott on very reasonable contract, and roll w/ Gainwell, Scott and add FA or draft a RB.

As much as I like Bradberry, I believe they will have a hard time keeping him since he’s likely in the 3/45 market. They will draft a CB at 10 or slightly trade up/back if the right guy is there.

LB, White was a home run as a 1 yr ‘gap’ deal at $4m. Would like to keep both him and Edwards, since TJ is home grown. But will take an investment. Do have Dean. Will look at another 1 yr deal if need be from a young vet.

Both safeties as FAs is tough. CJGJ certainly has higher visibility, more production and higher price tag. He’s also a leader. Epps not as much. They might keep Epps since the price tag is lower. I think they are going to try and keep CJGJ too.

Cox & Graham will both depart. Thank you for everything. You drafted Davis last year. Going to have to dig deep to try and keep Hargraves. Definitely will be drafting end/tackle with their other 1st rd pick.

Fat Linval was just short term fill in. They might keep him at low cost deal for depth.

Isaac Seumalo gonna probably get 4 or 5 yr deal at $10-12m a year. Will likely be gone. Plug Jurgens/Dillard in. Draft another o lineman.

Robert Quinn was flop. Not sure he gets much money. on back burner.

Uncle Rico might be back, since you need a QB that has some experience in case of emergency.

OC and DC will be big. I think they stay in house for both, Brian Johnson goes from QB coach to OC. Dennard Wilson goes from secondary to DC. Maybe Bieniemy at OC as an outsider.

  14. This was a sham roster. A bunch of good time girls who signed on thinking they hitched their wagons to a winner. I’m glad Suh et al tanked in the big game.
