Eric Bieniemy has agreed in principle on a multi-year deal that will make him assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, a source tells PFT.

Bieniemy had a two-day interview with the Commanders before agreeing to leave Kansas City after five seasons as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. Bieniemy will call the plays in Washington, something Andy Reid did in Kansas City.

Bieniemy’s contract with the Chiefs expired after the season.

His title promotion, the years on the contract and the annual salary is more than the Chiefs were willing to commit to, per the source.

Bieniemy has interviewed for 16 head coaching positions with 15 different teams since 2019, according to USA Today. That includes interest from the Colts in this hiring cycle before they hired Steve Steichen earlier this week.

He has become the face of the NFL’s problem of racial inequality within the head coaching ranks.

DeMeco Ryans, who was hired by the Texans, was the only Black coach to get an opportunity in this hiring cycle, which had five openings. Six head coaches, including three who are Black, have a diverse background.

Bieniemy, 53, now gets a chance to run the offense in Washington, out of the shadow of Reid and Patrick Mahomes, which maybe helps show NFL owners he is as good as his resume says he is.

  1. Turn the commanders into an elite offense and owners probably won’t care about his record in Colorado.

  2. Most of the league coaches come from other great coaches. Reid himself never called plays and was in the shadow of mike Holmgren prior to becoming a headcoach. NFL owners struggle to be able to imagine minorities in leadership roles. It’s the same reason there were so few minority QB for so long. Until their mentality changes nothing will change.

  3. If he turns this offense around with all the questions they have at QB then he’ll have proven himself and deserving to be a Head Coach the next cycle. That’s a big if.

  4. Good things have been happening since they hired Ron Rivera. Maybe he’s the first coach Dan Snyder actually respected, and is allowing him to do things his way.

  5. Honestly I feel a bit bad about this move… but that’s mainly because I think the Commanders coaches are going to get fired less than 12 months after they get a new owner.

Of course, maybe they won’t get a new owner…

Either way, Eric Bieniemy is screwed…

  6. He doesn’t have a QB with WFT; so, if the offense is good next year he will be a HC in 2024.

  7. If he really wanted a hc job, then this is the way. Now let’s see if he can actually call an offense

  8. He had Adrian Peterson in Minnesota, and Patrick Mahomes in KC. He’ll keep failing up until he doesn’t any longer.

  9. People in Kansas City are very happy to hear this . Nagy will hopefully get placed in the OC position .

  10. Okay now what? they wont come close to the Super Bowl in our lifetimes. Why move to this team for the same job? Maybe River boat is on a short leash. We’ll see what happens.

  11. When he bombs in Washington then perhaps the hubbub will slow down.

Funny how in every article I have seen about him not getting a HC gig and that being a “problem”, there is no mention of his past off the field issues. Teams simply do not want to deal with the blowback when womens groups start protesting.

    Simple enough.

  12. Sorry, but race has nothing to do with it. I’m not going to hire a black coach for the sake of hiring a black coach if he ain’t qualified to run a team. If I run a multi-billion dollar operation, I’m certainly going to hire the most qualified individual black or white.

  13. If he flames out in Washington, I’m sure you’ll spend as much time pointing out that teams were right not hiring him as it was all Reid and Mahomes. Some people are great coordinators but lousy coaches, paging Wade Philips, get over it.

  14. i wonder why eb has to prove his worth when Pederson and Nagy didn’t. Surely, it can’t be racial.

  15. Is it possible the he is a terrible interview and that is why he hasn’t gotten a job as a head coach?

  16. Figured it would be some wokester like Riviera. Would be hilarious if they can Riverboat Ron midway thru the year and make Bienemy the head coach.

  17. Welcome to the Commanders. You was a Beast at Colorado and a leader at KC.
Can’t wait to see you make the once considered impossible journey possible.

  18. For Washington fans this is a major upgrade. EB will transform the offense and he will become a successful HC in the NFL.

  19. This is a no-lose move for him. He wasn’t getting promoted if he stayed. He still might not get a HC shot, but he might as well take the risk and find out. Word is he likes Howell and thinks he can make it work with him at QB. If he does that, considering the expectations, that will go a long way on his resume. Can’t say he’s a product of Mahomes/Reid, good or bad.

  20. Great opportunity for him to take a shabby organization and put him in the playoffs. If he does that he’ll be a head coach next year.

Mentality? Struggle to imagine? NFL’s top salary earners in 2022: Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahommes. Should I use your thinking and ask when owners mentality will change in regards to pay?

  22. Congrats Eric Bieniemy. I hope you develop the leagues 2nd most prolific and high scoring team, soon.

  23. 12% of 32 is approximately 4. Based on population percentages from the US census, it’s a false narrative to say ‘the NFL’s problem of racial inequality within the head coaching ranks.’ It just isn’t true.

  24. So if Washington’s offense is terrible are we still gonna say that he deserves an HC spot? It’s not gonna be easy to make an offense look great without Mahomes, Kelce, and Andy Reid.

  25. Will be interesting to see the response when calling play after play that would work 10/10 times in KC just doesn’t work at all in Washington.

Without Mahomes and Kielce, your effective playbook just got reduced by 50%…on a good day.

  26. He has become the face of the NFL’s problem of racial inequality within the head coaching ranks.
    Only in the medias mind….

  27. I was thinking he needed to do something like this. He needs to prove himself outside of KC. Go someplace else and create another solid offense. Even then, there will be people who will say someone else did the work. He’s going to have his work cut out for him, but I’m glad he’s getting this chance.

  28. Wait, what? 16 head coach interviews?? Ok, c’mon, if you have that many interviews and don’t get hired, it’s not a racial problem, it’s a you problem.

  29. Beineimy does not have a proven track record prior to coaching under Andy Reid.

I don’t think he will have the same type of success with the Commanders.

Beineimy benefited from Andy Reid calling the plays and Patrick Mahomes, the best QB in the NFL.

  30. 0 for 16 in interviews doesn’t make me think there’s a race problem, it makes me think there’s an interviewing problem, as in he doesn’t interview well. But what do I know, I ain’t woke.

  31. Did the “New Owner/Owners” mandate Rivera to hire his replacement in Bieniemy ? Sean Payton said some bidders had contacted him.

  32. even the chiefs didnt want him. they extended him 1 year last year hoping this would be the year they’d get free draft picks.
    .
that was part of their cap strategy.

  33. “Let’s see – I believe Dan Snyder is a fair and well-respected owner for me. I’m going to Washington” Have such words ever been spoken?

  34. I think EB has a real chance to succeed in Washington! Sure he doesnt have Mahommes and Kelce but what most of you fail to realize is the fact that Washington has some serious talent on offense!.Those recievers are really solid,McClauren and Dotson?….Sam Howell is unproven but he has crazy skills and a canon for an arm! Ask the Dallas Cowboys! They know!….So If Bienemy can get the most out of Sam Howell and Brian Robinson then fix that o line he could be very successful!

  35. I think that Bieniemy is being set up. RI(vera is a smart guy and he knows that his team has not played well. Now they are starting with a new QB. If the new QB/offense fails, Riveria can blame Bieniemy.
