Eric Bieniemy’s arrival won’t change Commanders’ quarterback plan for 2023

During Super Bowl week in Arizona, Commanders coach Ron Rivera was candid about the team’s plan for quarterback in 2023.

Rivera said on PFT Live (video attached) that Sam Howell enters the offseason program as QB1, that they won’t pursue a veteran starter, and that they will try to add a veteran backup.

That was said before Rivera hired an offensive coordinator. In the aftermath of the hiring of Eric Bieniemy to fill that role, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the strategy has not changed.

Bieniemy, along with the other candidates for the job, were positive about the team’s offensive roster, including Howell. The main challenge for the coming season will be to repair and improve the offensive line.

The Commanders aren’t far away from qualifying for the playoffs. But for a couple of questionable calls against the Giants, it may have been Washington and not New York as the No. 6 seed in 2022.

  1. Trade Dan snyder for a bag of peanuts. Give Howell a chance. Fire the refs from that Giants game.

  2. Howell is the most underrated qb in the league. His play tailed off his last collegiate season because pretty much the entire team had graduated in the spring. But based on the entire record, Howell was a first round talent. He is tough, smart, can run, and throws a beautiful deep ball (his pass to McLaurin in the Dallas game may have been the best throw of the season.) Washington can win with Howell BUT they gotta fix the offensive line.

  3. EB made a desperation move. The world knows how bad he wants a shot as the guy but when Washington’s offense is bottom half, again; it will be his fault. Putting him even further from his goal at almost no fault of his own. Andy ain’t a hall of famer without players either.

    ___________

Andy Reid career head coaching record: 269–154–1 (.636)

  5. Nowhere to hide now EB, sink or swim. Rooting for you to make the 15 teams that DIDN’T hire you look foolish.

  6. Let’s be honest here. Bienemy is not a head coach because the league has a quota and it’s met currently. They won’t allow too many minorities be head coaches because the NFL cares about the old boy network and the message that giving too many opportunities to worthy people would send to retreads they keep going from job to job. The NFL knows they won’t rock the boat and complain about all the problems the NFL has.

  7. Sam Howl will last six games before he is sidelined for the rest of the season for being worthless and overrated. The Washington Commodes should trade Chaseless Young to whomever will pay the price so the team can get a 2024 high draft pick.

  8. QB is not all that will not change. This offense will be average at best and this team will be hiring a new head coach next year whether it be EB moved up or someone else.

  9. EB is a tremndous leader of men AND a fabulous offensive mind. He learned at the knee of one of the greatest offensive minds in NFL history and got THAT man to his best results in his HOF career. EB had better results than Peterson and Nagy did under Andy Reid and will do GREAT with Washignton. He learned offense under Andy Reid for 10 seassons with the last 5 as OC. HE WILL implement the Andy Reid system and it WILL produce. He will need to get the culture and personell in place before we see the top speed results…I just hope a new owner doesnt come in and switch everything before EB and Rivera get the chance to change it all around.
