Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is changing agents ahead of free agency, Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports.

CAA negotiated Jones’ rookie contract after the Giants made him the sixth overall pick out of Duke in 2019, and he made $26.129 million. Raanan reports that it is expected Jones will join Athletes First ahead of negotiations on a long-term deal.

The Giants did not pick up Jones’ fifth-year option, so he is scheduled to become a free agent in March. But the team has the franchise tag to use if they don’t come to terms on a long-term deal by March 7, the deadline to use the tag.

Jones earned a bigger payday with his play in 2022 when he threw for 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions and ran for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. The Giants made the postseason and beat the Vikings in the wild card round before losing to the Eagles in the divisional round.

The Giants now will have to pay Jones more than they would have on the fifth-year option, which would have been worth $22.4 million in 2023. The franchise tag for quarterbacks for 2023 is $32.4 million.

  1. They better hope they can sign face of the franchise Bark as Jones is headed for the tag with this move. CAA has a long history with the Giants having repped Eli Manning his entire career. Remember Athletes First repped Kenny Golladay, how that work out?

If the Giants use non exclusive tag, teams would have to give NY 2 #1s. I don’t see that happening.

  2. Out of every nfl player available to be tagged this offseason, i think DJ is a prime candidate, and it would be an opportunity for him to step up and bet on himself to prove he deserves a new deal. Im not sure he’s earned a new contract yet, but a 1 year deal for more than he’s made in the past 4 years put together is great for both parties. Daboll will make the best decision for the team, he’s proved it so far anyways

  3. The guy threw 15 touchdowns and that’s his idea of a career year. He’s not worth more than 15 million a year

  4. Uh, what? Negotiating what? He’s been a tier 3 and sometimes tier 2 QB. If the Giants offer him anything over 20 a year he should thank God in heaven above for the charity.

  5. It’s hard to judge the value of a QB who has played four seasons and has yet to have an NFL-caliber starter at WR.

  6. I can’t believe how much the media blew up Daniel Jones this year for throwing for 15tds against 5 picks. Tua is still a bust in their eyes, yet Danny Dimes turned the corner. SMH

  7. If they don’t pick up 5th year, there should be an added penalty for the team in order to franchise tag that player. Perhaps that specific tag should be 20% higher? Something to consider changing in the CBA in the future.

  8. Not worth even the tag. One year that honestly is still average and it was all do to scheming around his issues.

  9. Why would they tag him, if that’s more expensive than the 5th year option?
Clearly the Giants are done with Daniel and are looking for a new QB

  10. He’s not worth it. Take a team friendly deal or let him go. No way this guy should be paid anywhere near 40 million. He’s not worth half that.

  11. Congrats to him for having a decent year when the contract was on the line but he is who he is at this point and he’s not worth that much he’s Ryan Fitzpatrick at best and not a franchise qb.

  12. I highly doubt the Giants would fall for the hook of giving Jones a megadeal. The smart thing to do would be to tag them, let them play with a one-year contract and see if last year really wasn’t a Anomaly. I do not believe, in any case, that it is a QB of more than 30 million. But, crazier contracts that have been signed lately.

Why???? Jones would make more playing next season being franchise tagged than he would if the Giants had picked up his 5th year option. A lot more. And you want to see the team get penalized?

  14. This is code for … “I’m more important than the team.” Say goodbye to team chemistry.

  15. Hopefully the Giants realize there is no market for Jones and don’t bet against themselves like we see lots of desperate teams do after one good season. 3yrs-$90m with $60m-$70m guaranteed. That deal doesn’t break the bank and has a tolerable dead cap hit if Jones was a one hit wonder that they have to ditch him after year two.

  16. Not a Giants fan but like the team and the organization. Seems reasonable to give Jones a one year franchise – he can bet on himself, he gets a reward for a decent year and being on an upward trend, and the Giants reward him moderately and minimize risk for the time being. If he has another career year and the Giants, say, win the NFC East and two playoff games, Jones’ bet on himself will pay off handsomely and the Giants I suspect will be secretly happy to pay him with a long term deal then.
