Former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan remains in the mix for the defensive coordinator job in Denver.

Jay Glazer of Fox reported last week that Ryan interviewed with the Broncos for that role on Sean Payton‘s staff and word this week was that he’s a top contender for the job. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Ryan had another interview with the team in Denver on Saturday.

Ryan has worked for ESPN since being fired as the Bills head coach at the end of the 2016 season and Schefter notes that he’s told the network that he’ll only leave for the “perfect situation.”

Former Broncos head coach Vance Joseph also interviewed with the team about the defensive coordinator vacancy this week and it seems likely that there will be news soon about who will be running the defense for Payton in his first year with the Broncos.

  1. Regardless of your opinion of Rex as a coach, you can’t fault him for always putting his best foot forward.

  2. Ryan is a good coach but he is an attention seeking wind bag. Payton has a strong enough presence to keep Ryan in his place. Ryan as DC there could work.

  3. I hope he gets the job. He ends up being terrible for his team after a short period of success. Couldn’t happen to a nicer team

  4. The Broncos should have required Payton to disclose his coordinator choices prior to hiring him. A college Division 3 graduate assistant is more qualified than Rex.

  5. Rex was a bad HC but an excellent DC.
It would be interesting to see him get the job.
The only worry is he has been away from the game for 7 years

    An extremely overrated coach.

Not true considering sooo many fans consider him 1 of the worst coaches and only remember the Sanchez/feet stuff its impossible for him to be overrated.

  7. He is a good coordinator. But it has been proven that Rex is too much of a buffoon to be a head coach. Hopefully this job isn’t a stepping stone. Fans don’t really need a third episode of Rex the HC.

  8. The entertainment value is there, but this guys been out of the league for a long time. I wonder if he’ll be able to adapt

  9. Hopeful that Rex can recruit brother, Rob on his defensive coaching staff, as well. Team should be incredible.

  10. The Broncos should have required Payton to disclose his coordinator choices prior to hiring him. A college Division 3 graduate assistant is more qualified.

    _______

I love it when the fanboys think they know more than Sean Payton.

  11. Somehow Ryan twice got the Jets just a game short of the Super Bowl. Not an easy accomplishment for that team. Ryan can’t be that bad of a coach.

  12. Took the Jets to the AFC Championship twice. He was Pats biggest foe for several years. He deserves credit for what he did as a HC. Especially without a QB. The Bills were a bad fit.

  13. Why would Vance Joseph interview? Looking for a job as a coordinator from a team that fired you as a HC?

  14. I somehow find the guy annoying whether he’s coaching or pontificating. So I can’t win in this case.

He probably did: it’s common for coaches to lay out their potential staff hires during the interview.

Oh wait, I get it. You meant that Payton should’ve *publicly* announced all plans before getting hired. Surprisingly – especially if you read the internet or watch TV – teams don’t make “clearing it with the fans and media” Priority #1 when making a decision.

  16. Rex Ryan may be a bit of a blow-hard and a little bit of a clown but anyone who says he’s not a great defensive coordinator just doesn’t understand football

  17. Rex Ryan lovesssssssssssss to blitz and Mahomes eats blitz’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bring it on!

If Payton disclosed his plan to hire Ryan during his interview then why is he now interviewing multiple people? Why not hire Ryan the next day and be done with it?

I could not care less whether Payton publicly announced his plans. The pertinent question is why would Broncos management agree to a defensive coordinator who has been out of football for seven years?
