New Colts head coach Shane Steichen has decided on his first offensive coordinator.

Indianapolis is hiring Jim Bob Cooter for the role, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Cooter spent the 2022 season as the Jaguars’ passing game coordinator. But he also served as a consultant for the 2021 Eagles, which is his previous tie to Steichen.

Cooter was the Lions offensive coordinator from 2016-2018. But he will not call plays in 2023, as Steichen said last week that he plans to do that for the offense.

  1. I know I’m a broken record here, and it’s probably not funny anymore but the dude is the all-time Florida Man Name Champion. He should only be allowed to coach the Bucs, Jags, and maybe Fins (his name might be too Florida for Miami)

  2. Greatest name in the history of sports. The Colts won’t do squat until they find a QB, but they’ve got an OC with the best name ever.

  3. If I can’t call the plays as an offensive coordinator, I wouldn’t take the job . Classic rookie HC MOVE calling the plays .

  4. Wasn’t Jim Bob the OC for the Detroit Lions that fell asleep in the 2nd half of live game?

  5. New England area would know all about Jim bobs. Most rural hayseed area of the country with most places lacking running water. Touchback6 knows the facts

  6. Mr. Cooter’s parents should be ashamed of themselves. On the plus side, on his salary, going to court to change his name is affordable.

  7. Isn’t this the same guy that was arrested in Tennessee back in 2009 for climbing through an apartment window, stripping down to his underwear and getting in bed with a woman?

Must be very talented to have that little detail overlooked in his NFL coaching career.

  8. No merit to any comments, just goofing on a guys name. Pathetic! I don’t get why someone would want to be an O coordinator without play calling duties…unless it’s a huge pay raise…then I 100% get it.

  9. Always baffling when these teams just keep recycling the same old coaches around the league.

  10. It took NFL defenses half a season to figure out Cooter’s O. Every team he leaves becomes instantly better.

You’re a being hard on the Cooter’s. Some cooter’s are sensitive..

  12. If he took the time since with the Lions to learn something about being an offensive coordinator he’ll now know something about how to be an offensive coordinator.

  13. Lions fan here. He was a decent OC for us. He didn’t really adapt to when the league started picking up on his plays, but prior to that, he got a lot out of his players (and there wasn’t a ton to work with at the time). I think Colts fans should give the guy a chance – he genuinely might surprise you.
