Report: Brock Purdy’s surgery postponed because of inflammation

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will not undergo elbow surgery Wednesday as planned, after all. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that Purdy had a pre-op visit in Arlington with Dr. Keith Meister and the Texas Rangers team physician recommended postponing surgery because of ongoing inflammation.

Purdy will meet with Meister again in early March.

The quarterback needs surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and the delay obviously pushes back the timeline on Purdy’s return.

The 49ers are hopeful the injury requires only a repair and not a “hybrid surgery” that also entails some reconstruction. The plan is for an internal brace, which involves screws and sutures to stabilize the ligament, but Meister will determine during surgery if a graft is needed.

The internal brace repair option would keep Purdy out about six months, allowing him to start throwing in three months with a slow, three-month build up. The more intensive surgery would sideline him into the season.

Purdy played as a rookie only because of injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Lance is close to returning, and he and Purdy are expected to compete for the starting job, though Lance will get a head start with Purdy sidelined.

Purdy finished his rookie regular season completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in seven games. He completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 569 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in three playoff games.

Garoppolo will become a free agent next month, and the 49ers are expected to find a low-cost No. 3 quarterback in free agency. If Purdy’s surgery is more involved than expected, then the 49ers likely will seek a higher-end veteran to pair with Lance until Purdy returns.

  1. If the 49ers don’t retain Jimmy GQ then the Philly disaster will be a microcosm of their upcoming season.

  2. We hardly knew ye.

At some point, Jed York will wake up and realize overrated Shanahan is the problem there.

  3. He already had a weak arm and struggled with arm strength before, you have think his arm strength will be even further deteriorated after tearing the main ligament one relies on to generate velocity/torque when throwing. Odds are he’s never the same again and I’d bet he’s out a longer than 6 months especially if they end totally reconstructing the ligament with a graft. At the earliest of everything goes perfectly I’d bet he’s out till October, and I don’t think he’ll look the same when he does come back. He is going to have Chad Pennington Level arm strength when he comes back.

  4. We all have our hopes, but it sure doesn’t sound like the best-case scenario is happening here…

  5. I don’t watch many NFC games, but in the small sample I saw, Purdy looked like the best QB in his division.

  6. As a Texas Rangers fan, I’m not sure if I would take much advice from them. Our pitching is trash year after year.

  7. Kind of feel bad for the guy he won’t be back till 2024 and his starting spot will be long

  8. Ok, enough news on a career backup QB. You do realize when backups come in, they dumb down the offense, which is usually overly complex to begin with. That’s why Brady looked better than Bledsoe. They didn’t ask him to do too much, just like Purdy. And with a great defense, you guys still give the QB all the credit. Marino is one the greatest QBs ever, but because he doesn’t have rings and things, he gets no credit. BS.

  9. Dang so they’re really going to rush him back from surgery just because Trey Lance is straight mid?

  10. The injury is worst than expected…he will need full TJ surgery and be out the whole year

  11. How will he be ready for the start of the season if his surgery is delayed?

    He also needs practice time

  12. They’d be crazy not to give Trey Lance a shot at winning the job, regardless of the Purdy injury. They gave up quite a bit to move up and draft him. Purdy did a great job, but do they really think he’s the answer? If they’ve already decided that he is, they’ve also admitted that they threw away two 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick.

  13. Shanahan – Uh Jimmy….about that thing I said about no scenario that we would like you back with the team…
Jimmy – Go eat dirt, Kyle.

  14. Oh boy, this thing will drag on and on. 49ers better fricken have 3 QBs on their roster all 17 games and playoffs. This team is paying two rookies currently. So, their total QB payroll is less that 10 million for 2023. How about signing a legitimate veteran who wants a ring. Better to get ahead of the situation. Act, don’t react. Get a vet signed so he can learn the system.

  15. Do it right Kid.
You’ll get your chance to shine again, and you’ll want to be 100%, not 90%.

  16. So when is the last time that a guy had surgery and they declared afterward, “Good news – the damage wasn’t as bad as we thought!” Almost never. I think at this point everyone is expecting that they are going to have to do the reconstruction, and that his 2023 season is in jeopardy. Now, good news for him is that he showed enough that someone is going to give him another chance to play when he is ready, but I’d be awfully surprised to see him throwing in camp or on the active roster when the season starts…

  17. Instead of going out and getting a first rate QB, Shannahan thinks he’s a genius who can mold anyone. Think if they had gotten Brady a couple years ago and used the drafts picks to improve the team, instead of getting an unproven QB. They have wasted a lot of good teams with second rate quarterbacks.

  18. Hopefully he’ll recover fine – other QBs have. Also, while he does not have Josh Allen arm it’s quite adequate.

For those who put this on Shanahan, just Google what Joe Thomas, Mitchell Shwartz and Mike Martz has to say about the play he got injured. The TE blocking Reddick was supposed to lose outside contain. It’s on Purdy for the rookie mistake of not stepping up in the pocket. Aiyuk was wide open against Bradbury and Purdy was late.

    Oh well. Hope he recovers

  19. I for one couldn’t be more pleased by having uncertainty for the 49ner’s failed upcoming season!

  20. 49ers need to sign a veteran QB in the range of 8-16 million a year. Sign a vet to 2-3 year contract. Be proactive not reactive. This is an ongoing problem you cannot wish away. Get a vet in uniform learning the system.

  21. 7th round pick with no guaranteed money. I sure hope he’s able to work his way back from this.

  22. Hopefully this isn’t indicative of his long term health. The scary part is this is his throwing elbow. I realize the Niners have Lance as well but all he’s shown is being injury prone as well. Not sure if they’ll get in on the Carr sweepstakes but they should at least entertain it if they’re dead set on not bringing back Jimmy.

  23. If there is a QB competition between Lance and Purdy, and BOTH get the same playbook to operate against the SAME defense, Lance should win based upon skill level. Trey is the better athlete. Purdy played with a reduced playbook and less pressure/ lowered expectations as the 3rd string emergency starter. He was a pleasant surprise, but he was chosen last in the draft because his skill level was perceived to be lower than the 8 QBs were chosen in the 2022 draft before Purdy (and it was a down year for QBs in that draft.). It’s difficult to believe that his skill level will flourish after his significant injury and with the more complex playbook an NFL season requires.

Huge assumption you made that the playbook was reduced. Also, perceived is not the same as actual. If it was Brady would have been drafted #1 overall. Teams don’t get it right all the time.
Fact is that the team was way way better with purdy than with Jimmy. All offensive categories showed he was the superior player.

The lowered expectations lasted for maybe a game or two.
People need to stop knocking the guy. He came in and played lights out. No one can say he’ll be a star or won’t. But, I’d root for any player to come back from injury to prove they’re worth.
