Report: Byron Jones isn’t retiring, despite his tweets

The tweets posted on Saturday by Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones created the clear impression that he’s unable to play football. Which could mean he’s done playing football.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Jones isn’t retiring. Jackson adds that the “general expectation” is that Jones will be cut, given that he has a non-guaranteed salary (per NFLPA records) of $13,5 million.

It’s important that Jones, a first-round pick of the Cowboys in 2015, not retire. If he does, he’d potentially owe the Dolphins $4.2 million in signing bonus money he received in 2020. So he just needs to wait to be released.

If he simply can’t play, he eventually will be.

In all, his current contract carries $14.8 million in dead cap money. If the Dolphins cut Jones with a post-June 1 designation, they’d eat $4.75 million this year, and the remaining $10.05 million in 2024.

The bottom line is if he can’t play, he won’t be playing. But the label applied to his disengagement from the team has significant potential meaning.

  1. He’s clearly done with football. That retraction was his lawyers and agent looking out for their cut, I mean their client.

  2. If he can’t play WHY did he practice throughput training camp AT a high level with even McDaniels praising him only to abruptly quit ? It wasn’t anything to do with his Achilles injury – his own teammates & coaches distanced themselves & said they didn’t understand what was going on or had no comment. Someone that took a boatload of Miami’s cash (I’m looking at you Byron Jones) isn’t telling the truth!

  3. He’s a Dolphin so no one cares. Squish the fish. The only news a Fin fan would probably want to hear if they care about their team is that their third string QB Tua finally quit so they could get a real QB.

The Thundering Herd will always reign supreme over that franchise.

  4. It’s pretty simple he wants the money but dosent want to play again, no heart left for the game….

  5. The Thundering Herd? The team that LOST FOUR SUPER BOWLS? LMAO

  6. He’s not injured enough to pass up that $13.5 million he’s on the books for this year apparently.

  7. For years under this general manager in Miami is where players go to cash in and play little or not at all.

  8. When players quit like this, the team shouldn’t owe them any money or face a cap hit because the player has no integrity.

  9. He’s had a lot of criticism thrown at the medical staff/decisions, so maybe he has something there. If he hasn’t gotten quality care why hasn’t his union jumped on this like a union should? Maybe his injury is more serious than he thought and just doesn’t want to heal right. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the individuals providing care and he’s more upset that his body hasn’t responded well, so he has to blame someone. Just sounds like there’s a lot more behind the curtain than what’s being ‘tweeted’.

  10. The so-call team doctors work for the Shield and they answer to the NFL… They are responsible for keeping the product on the field and making decisions that are best not for the people but for the NFL. There has been plenty of malpractice by these NFL team physicians. Jones was a world-class athlete and considered one on the best CB in the NFL before the injury. The NFLPA has never been for the best of the players but what best for the organization…

  11. For anyone thinking this is anything other this is… Jones took full part in Dolphins training camp last year and up until the last week camp, was expected to play week 1 (he did not play in pre season games for “caution” however)… week after week his absence wouldn’t be explained, Why? Because medically there was nothing wrong with him anymore. This is 100% a Kawhi Leonard situation, and Jones basically stole 15 million dollars from the Dolphins in 2022. He also left a massive hole in a super bowl contending team. The fact that he now claims he can’t “run or jump” (he was doing it last summer somehow?) but “isn’t retiring” is 100% a money move. The man will probably never play again, but is milking the most he can to get as much money as possible before he’s finally cut. 100% expect some sort of NFL lawsuit on top it. /my 2 cents
