Matthew Slater and Bill Belichick only needed a few minutes to agree he’s coming back

When the Patriots announced that special teams captain Matthew Slater will return for his 16th season, coach Bill Belichick said he was thrilled. And that’s all Slater needed.

The 37-year-old Slater told TheAthletic.com that he had a very short conversation with Belichick to confirm that both sides still wanted him to play in New England.

“I bumped into him outside the weight room,” Slater said. “I was going out, he was coming. I told him I felt like I wanted to come back and play. And it was very well received. He was excited that I felt that way.”

Slater said he would have listened if Belichick had told him it was time to retire.

“If Bill had said, ‘OK, it’s time,’ that would have removed all doubt about playing,” Slater said. “But he wanted me back. The conversation was all of two minutes, maybe three minutes.”

Slater’s dad, Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jackie Slater, played 20 seasons with the Rams, so 16 seasons with one team doesn’t seem like a lot.

“I’m in a very unique position. My dad has more experience doing what I do than I have. The conversation between us was what Year 16 looked like to him, in his career. And how he felt physically,” Slater said.

Whether Slater can play as long as his dad did remains to be seen, but he’s not ready to walk away yet, and Belichick isn’t ready to lose his special teams captain.

  1. Best special teams player in history. The guy has lead by example his whole career. May not have been the biggest or fastest but he gave his all and raised the level of play for those around him.

  2. Slater is a special player, and a great person off the field as well. I believe He’ll be headed to Canton which is unheard of for special teams guys

  3. That’s just crazy. Father&son have a combined 35 years in the NFL and the sons not done yet.

  4. Glad Slater will be back. He is still very effective in special teams and one of the truly great guys in the NFL.

  5. Pats and Ravens have battled for FAs and on waivers for Special Teams players over the years. They both value the position enough to keep guys around who make a difference even if they don’t see the field much otherwise.

  6. Congrats, Slater. BB is an outstanding talent evaluator and calls it the way it is. This should send the culture warriors into hiding: nothing to stand on to virtue signal here!

  7. I feel like he plays for free at this point. He’s going to be a great coaching candidate if he ever wants to go that route.

  8. Despite all the great players and head coach in that locker room, it was their special teams captain, Slater, who brought them together in a circle in the locker room at the end of games. That speaks volumes of what his teammates, coaches and ownership thinks of him.

He drafted N’Keal Harry over DK Metcalf and Deebo Samuel

  10. A lot of fans tend to undervalue special teams. I feel like every time I tune into a Patriots game, this guy is making a big play. He has been a key part of that team for many years. And he’s still playing at a high level.

    Great leader, too.

He also drafted Tom Brady and won 6 Super Bowls. I think that more than makes up for it.

Amazing people keep trying to play this stupid game. Pick any one of the other 31 teams, and I’ll match or top it for draft misses. Grow up.

Really guys? He makes 2 plays a year that might make an impact. Lets dial it back a bit.

Name some big plays by special team (not by a kicker) during 23 years with Belichick.

That would be fine if you had considered he was just a good coach and GM AT MOST.

BB has whiffed a lot in early round picks in recent years. Especially on the offensive side of the ball. Statistically he would have been better trading away all 1st and 2nd round picks for multiple later round picks.

Is this a serious question? Did you just start following the Patriots in 2016?

    LOL!

The STs legendary coaching prowess from BB has a laundry list so long, it would take an hour to come up with all of them and to rank them from the intentional Safety in Denver in 2003 to the OT decision to force Gomer Manning to play into the wind in OT in 2013.

    LOL!!

I mean, it’s like you are an alien and just started learning this sport in recent years and don’t know any history of the team.

You and NHPats need to start a chat room where only weird Brady Cultists can post.

Where is THE LIST? I see only ONE from you during 23 years.

Do you want a list of the collapses of his defense in big games in 4th quarters? I can give you one.

  20. Speaking of Bill, how is he doing since Brady divorced him?

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

Accumulating his stats against lousy teams and inferior QBs, like always.

  21. Hey williamthegarbage: how about Marcus Jones running back a punt with 5 secs left against the Jets to win the game? Last year. The list is long of big special teams plays under Belichick. That would require doing some homework, instead of making things up as you go along, like usual.

  22. Hey nhthefakepatsfan: Yes, Belichick had a bad run with the draft that hamstrung the Pats post Brady. That has been rectified the past few years. It happens to every team. Including great drafters like Ozzie Smith with the Ravens. Anyone wonder why the Pats were in the top 5 of the league in Pro Bowlers almost every year, while winning 6 rings? I would list all the great players Belichick has drafted and/or signed. I just don’t want to do any other lazy person’s homework either.

Pretty good actually. 2021 exec of the year and a lot better than Denver after HGH Manning left there!

How’s your cap? Ok? Any cheating we can expect with all those lost draft picks?

PS Kraft chose BB, not Brady. Giselle couldn’t stand Brady at the end, she just divorced him.

    Try reality.

Reality. Let’s look at it since Brady left. BB has one postseason appearance with a complete embarrassment as a result. Brady had his team in the postseason every year with a SB win.

    It’s not even close

Rectified? At this point Max Jones is looking like another 1st round whiff.

Top 5 in pro bowlers? Go check out this last year

  27. I’m skipping all the comments to chime in. Matheau Slater has earned a HOF bust next to his dad.

Correcting something when anyone with a brain knew what I meant. Excellent point. Did I spell everything ok? Keep up the good work.

Hint -Low IQ people need inmediacy to satisfy short attention spans.

To compare a rebuild to the lucky situation Brady walked into in 2020 with a then fading career thereafter, is comparing apples to oranges.

Brady and TB are finished. NE is trending up. Try to
    keep up.

In 2021, with BB making Brady look like a deer in the headlights knowing the ego like we saw Brady do from 2007-2012 in postseasons, as Mac Jones outplayed Brady, is all I needed to see towards the next decade.

Brady will be in dark rooms with Erin Rodgers..

Most of them would be nobody without a chance playing in big games, and the reason they had chance? Tom Brady.

Only a rock on a pair of shoulders fails to realize it.

  32. TB6 actually posts here? I’m surprised he has time to, with his constant presence on Bills articles.

He’s so secure w/ his team’s success – I can only hope to ever have a team so accomplished that I spend all of my time on the articles of a team that hasn’t won anything.

Lol! Flabby 6th rd pick Brady is one of those lucky HOFers, like Slater or maybe even an Edelman, late rd picks that took the coaching and worked hard.

The fact you think any HOF player is a programmable robot who doesn’t need coaching, shows how detached you are from reality.

  34. TB6,

Seriously, Belichick believers like you are screwing him again.

You guys blame every problem on Matt Patricia, like the problem on offense will be gone with BOB, meaning, Belichick and Patriots don’t need to draft a potential top play maker or to pay for a top play maker.

  35. Lol! Flabby 6th rd pick Brady is one of those lucky HOFers,

Ever heard of QB skill called passing progressions?

Brady was certainly not on the level of Peyton Manning utilizing top play makers (the skill that creates great stats and produce MVP), but his passing progression was the best of all time, which allowed to get the receivers of 2nd level, 3rd level and 4th level involved in the offense.

Belichick the garbage? I bet he didn’t even know what it was.

  36. Without Brady, Belichick would have won Super Bowls

  37. Without Brady, Belichick would have won Super Bowls

Let us see if he can even win a divisional title.

  38. Brady had his team in the postseason every year with a SB win.

Let’s be real. That was not a playoff appearance this past season. He finished with a losing season. I will never acknowledge that as a legit playoff appearance because it was entirely the product of the worst division in sports. Nothing else.

As far as I’m concerned he has 2 playoff appearances and 1 losing season since leaving NE. No need to embellish it.

  39. Pretty sure BB is happy with all players who dont demand money and pull their weight

Lets see how the conversation goes with Jones, Meyers and Wynn

  40. Im happy for Slater, what a great career, he deserves another season.

But when do the Patriots realize, after the absolute best run in NFL history, that it is time to admit they are in rebuilding mode?
