Stephen Jones: We’ll probably use franchise tag again this year

No teams have used a franchise tag yet this offseason and one team to watch leading up to the March 7 deadline is the Cowboys.

Dallas used the tag on tight end Dalton Schultz last year and did not reach a long-term deal with him before last season. That leaves Schults on track for unrestricted free agency along with running back Tony Pollard, who would be in line for a $10.1 million contract under the terms of the tag.

Tagging Schultz again would cost about $13 million and executive vice president Stephen Jones said Monday that he expects someone to get the tag in the near future.

“We’re not afraid of the tag. End of the day we’ll probably use it again this year,” Jones said, via Todd Archer of ESPN.com.

With Ezekiel Elliott possibly on his way out, Pollard seems to be the likelier bet for a tag and we’ll know one way or another in a little more than a week.

  1. It’s surprising the Cowboys have the success they do, considering the level of incompetence at the top. The Jones family still hasn’t figured out that they are the primary reason the team hasn’t won anything that matters in almost 3 decades.

What success do they have? Barely been to or won any playoff games in 30 years

Truth. And their fans keep running their mouths about how great they were in the 90s. Over and over. Like anybody in the 2020s care. But oh well.

  4. Quite possibly the worst cap management in the NFL, right here.

    The bungling of Dak’s deal.
The rushing to sign LB Jaylon Smith (cut the next year)
The rush to sign La’el Collins (cut shortly after)
The trading of Amari Cooper for a ham sandwich.
Asking DeMarcus Lawrence to take a pay cut….then giving him a pay raise.
And the mother of all cap killers: Zeke Elliott will collect way more off his $90M deal than he deserves while being outplayed by RB2 and RB3.
Waiting for how they bungle upcoming deals for Parsons, Lamb, Diggs.

The saving grace of this franchise is the shadow GM: Will McClay and what Dan Quinn has done with the defense.

McClay runs the draft and it’s him finding free agency bandages. Everything else is cursed by the Jones family. Sadly Stephen Jones is the defacto capologist and there is no indication that he knows what the hell he is doing. I think it’s time to let Charlotte Jones take more football responsibility.

  5. If Elliott is smart he will restructure to free up some space to keep him and Pollard. They are a good RB1 & RB2, Elliott knows he has no market if he is released, not at 10 million.

If they do that they are likely making the same mistake as with WR group. I think almost everyone knows that zeke is finished. Even if you sign him for less money you are keeping a better backup off the roster.
Pollard was very good last year. But he was seriously injured and no one knows how effective he’ll be. It will be like counting on him like they counted on Gallup. Stephen Jones acknowledged the bungling of WR room. Now it’s the RB room turn to get bungled. Lol cowboys
