49ers quarterback Brock Purdy‘s right elbow surgery was set to happen last week, but doctors opted to postpone the operation because Purdy still had too much swelling around the injury.

A new date for the operation could come soon. 49ers General Manager John Lynch said at the Scouting Combine on Tuesday that Purdy will meet with his doctors later this month and that the hope is that the surgery can take place sometime next week.

Lynch said that the “best outcome” for this surgery comes what all “the swelling and stiffness” are gone, so it remains to be seen if things have improved enough for doctors to recommend moving forward at this point.

Lynch added that the postponement is not ideal because Purdy is expected to face a six-month recovery timeline and every day will move the team closer to the start of the 2023 season, but that the team wants the most positive final result under any circumstances.

  1. I don’t know – it seems like they will go in there and see he needs the full Tommy John, and if so, he will be out all of the year.

Lance needs to be pushed, they need to sign someone. I kind of like Taylor Heinicke as a cheap but decent backup that could start.

  2. The swelling isn’t good or bad as far as internal brace vs Tommy John, it just meant that they had to delay the operation. All signs point to Purdy starting if he is able to. My fingers are crossed that he can play opening day.

  3. Purdy’s had a bad string of luck that doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be seeing Purdy back on the field until 2024.

  4. Tough break for this talented kid. Even after elbow surgery it’s still Brock Purdy’s starting QB job to lose. You get the feeling Trey Lance is already on the outside looking in-in San Francisco.

  5. The team should shut up and let the player heal and allow the doctors to make decisions about the timing of his surgery. This is yet another example of a team prioritiing itself over their player. I hope Purdy gets a chance to start for a team that doesnt view him as (Mr.) irrelevant

  6. There is no reason to rush this kid back. Let him get the rest and rehab he needs. It’s a long game not a short game with him. We all know he can play now it’s just a matter of letting her lance get some Playing time to see what he has.

  7. Purdy showed more football talent and skill last year than Lance has shown since he was born until he became a pro.

  8. That sucks. Kid played way beyond expectations. Hopefully he can come back and show what he can do, but this setback hurts. A low end veteran backup has to be in the cards, as Trey Lance hasn’t shown he can actually play yet (though this is now an opportunity for him to seize the QB1 spot).
Gimmy G. is likely not in play for the 49’s this time. His play last year likely has priced him out of the 49’s budget.
