Ryan Poles: Plan is to start Justin Fields, but have to do homework on QB class

The Bears have the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and what they’ll do with it will be a storyline in the coming weeks and months.

Monday brought a report that said the team is leaning toward trading the pick away to a team looking for a quarterback, which would leave them to move forward with Justin Fields running the offense. There was also word that they intend to meet with the top quarterback prospects in this year’s class, which General Manager Ryan Poles confirmed during a press conference from the Scouting Combine on Tuesday.

Poles said that isn’t a sign that they’re looking to move on without Fields, however. He said he has not spoken to other teams about trading the 2021 first-round pick and that the team’s mindset is to move forward with the quarterback, but that they need to do their due diligence on the players entering the league this year.

“That’s the plan right now. We’re going to do our homework on this class,” Poles said.

Poles reiterated that he’d need to be blown away by a prospect in order to shift gears at quarterback this offseason. If that doesn’t happen, it seems likely that another team will be on the clock when the draft begins in April.

  1. That is the plan…….unless they see a QB in the draft who has a greater than 50% completion percentage.

  2. Right now a QB candidate with a pulse AND working arms is already better than Justine Fields.

  3. This GM didn’t pick Fields so he should strongly consider a change if they feel they have a better option. Can’t swing and miss if you do decide to take one of the QBs. Fields has a lower ceiling because he is inaccurate with the football. None of the incoming QBs are must haves either so I would look to trade the pick.

  4. Field’s issue last season was staying healthy. Last season, when healthy, Fields was one of the most dangerous QBs in the league. I would take Fields over any QB coming out in this year’s draft.

  5. Lots of talk about JF1, but *really* quiet about JLove. JF1 has a 59.7% slightly behind Love’s 60.2% he earned in garbage time.

Fields is the best player on the Bears and we have a ton more holes to fill. If he’s not the guy, we’ll have a Top 5 pick in the draft next year. Either our pick or whoever we trade with this year.

It’s a prove it year for Fields. Stabilize the lines, see what he can do.

The Bears were competitive and entertaining, for once. And that’s with 93MM in players not wearing the blue and orange. The tide is turning in the North.

What was Rodgers’ completion percentage in 2022? 4.9% ahead of Fields.

  6. Are you guys all just packers fans or do you actually watch football? Statistically fields progressed at all levels of the game. His accuracy was 60% on the year. His wide receivers and O-line did him no favors. They also would have won a lot more games had they actually had a defense and didn’t drop passes. Poles owns the 1st overall pick so he’s going to of course do his job. But more importantly he’s going to try and make it seem he’s interested in a QB to force a favorable trade. You can trash fields all you want but from a progression standpoint, he did all you can ask of him in year 2. Everyone is acting like the kid walked into the same circumstances as mahommes in KC. I’m not saying he’s mahommes but he didn’t have an all pro RB, TE, WR(best in the league), above average offensive line and an elite defense.

  7. It’s clear that the pressure is on Poles. If he trades the 1st pick and passes on Bryce Young, he might get fired with Fields in tow.

    LOL!

Why oh why do you draft a run based QB in the top 10?

What’s to LOL about? When healthy that “running” QB led the bears to multiple 30+ point games. I am not a Bears fan, but Fields & the Bears future should be very bright.
