NFL acknowledges “limited” freeze on pay increases

Despite a full recovery from the pandemic and the advent of unprecedented revenue levels, the NFL is keeping the belt tight.

Amid widespread chatter of no raises being implemented for league employees, the NFL has acknowledged a freeze in pay. The league says it is “limited to executives at a certain level.”

The league has declined to provide any further details.

When the pandemic began, the league eventually imposed layoffs. It becomes delicate, to say the least, to persuade employees who suffered through the bad times to not share in the good times, and by all appearances things are currently very good for the NFL.

On one hand, the NFL didn’t become so successful by giving money away. On the other hand, employees tend to expect periodic increases in their pay, if only to keep pace with the cost of living.

Again, the league calls it limited. But that could make it even more troublesome for the affected employees, since they may be confused as to how some qualified for raises and others didn’t.

  1. There is probably some prestige in working for the NFL.
I think they will be able to find workers, even if they don’t pay as well as other companies.

  2. That’s nice. Everyone else got inflation raises and the NFL goes cheap and scummy.

  3. No one is owed salary increases. And frankly just because teams are doing well doesn’t mean that league office has received an increase in funding.

Yes, people can choose to leave if they find better options, but inflation is bad, and companies across all sectors are laying off people.

  4. Just like corporate America. Nothing to see here, just the rich getting richer off the backs of their employees.

  5. If you want to pay less for the talent among your employees then you will wind up with lesser employees. The better ones will be snaking the better paying jobs elsewhere. Meanwhile you have to settle for whoever is willing to work for less.

  6. How much is enough $$$ ?

If Goodell would whack his pay down to about 15 MILLION a year, maybe the NFL
could afford to give a few payraises, working in NYC isn’t cheap.

  7. But that could make it even more troublesome for the affected employees, since they may be confused as to how some qualified for raises and others didn’t.

What’s confusing? You acknowledged in your article the league says it affects only “executives at certain levels”. This probably means the highest paid execs who already makes millions of dollars per year and were part of the discussions not to receive a pay raise. The pay freeze also probably comes in the form a bonus so it really doesn’t mean anything.

This is just like my CEO during the pandemic. She is already making millions per year including bonuses, but for 6 months during a layoff, she touted she wasn’t going to accept any pay while the layoff was going on.

That didn’t mean squat because unlike regular folks, we had to file for unemployment to make sure we can still pay bills. The CEO could’ve retired that day and still be set for life.

  8. Record revenues, don’t invest in your people or provide better value to your customers. Big business at it’s finest (see Exxon Mobil).

  9. I won’t lose any sleep over the NFL executive millionaires club members not getting a bump in their salary.

Oh but they are. On the backs of others they are.
