Ravens’ recently fired strength coach takes harsh criticism from NFLPA, players

The NFL Players Association’s report cards for all 32 teams found that the vast majority of players think highly of their strength coaches. The Ravens were a major exception.

The NFLPA report card gave 16 teams’ strength coaches a grade of either A or A+, and only two teams got a grade lower than B. Those two teams were the Falcons, with a D-, and the Ravens, with an F-.

Why did the Ravens score so low?

The finger is being pointed at Steve Saunders, who had been the Ravens’ strength coach for eight years before he was fired last month. The NFLPA made clear that it is hoping for improvement from the Ravens with Saunders gone.

“30 of the 32 teams in the NFL gave their strength coaches fairly positive reviews. Baltimore was one of the two teams that fell well below the rest, and they were even significantly below the second-worst team,” the NFLPA said in its report card. “Players do not feel like the strength staff helps them be more successful. The team recently parted ways with Head Strength Coach Steve Saunders, so we will be interested to see if this area improves in his absence.”

Several former Ravens players have also taken to social media to blame the team’s strength staff for injuries. The Ravens have addressed the issue by firing Saunders, but it’s clear that many players think the Ravens waited far too long to make a change.

  1. Should have happened after he gave the team Covid. Imagine being so bad at your job that you get a grade that isn’t even a grade.

  2. So these “grown men” who’ve had a decade of strength and conditioning and playing experience before reaching the pros somehow lose the ability to avoid injury once they get paid millions of dollars?

Do players take responsibility for anything anymore?

  3. Please tell me part of Saunders training was having Ravens players chase a chicken around like in Rocky.

  4. It wasnt until the moment that owner Steve Bisciotti publicly blasted another team’s QB contract that i began to realize that the ravens arent a top tier organization, and that they have been masking their ineptitudes with Ozzie’s championship trophies. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

  6. You just had to know the fired employee oversaw that lowest score possible. And now he whines. Go figure.

  7. “F-” is an amazing grade. Like “F” is bad enough, but seems someone can go deeper down the failure hole.

  8. But, but… the Ravens are undefeated in pre-season games. They are the all-time preseason champions.

  9. There has definitely been something wrong in that department for a while now.

  10. It’s not just the Ravens, it’s the NFL – their players are so overly pumped up with whatever juice they use this day that their tendons are like guitar strings ready to snap. NFL needs to regulate and realize all the torn ACLs are diluting the product. Also, switch to grass already, no one wants to play on sticky plastic w/ concrete underneath

For something that supposedly doesn’t matter, you guys sure bring it up a lot. But 2 Super Bowls in 26 years is far better than most teams can say. And if not for Brady and the Patriots, Joe Flacco would be a hall of famer. The preseason record, btw, is a testament to Ozzie Newsome and formidable draft capabilities, unlike the Patriots.
