Robert Saleh: Derek Carr “in line with” where Matthew Stafford was before going to Rams

Derek Carr had a second meeting with the Jets this week and any team that winds up signing him will be hoping for a successful second act for the longtime Raiders starter.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh invoked the best case scenario when talking to reporters about Carr on Thursday. Saleh said Carr has “an elite, elite mental makeup with regards to football IQ” and praised his accuracy and arm strength while referencing the move that Matthew Stafford made from the Lions to the Rams before the 2021 season.

“He’s been asked to do a lot in his career,” Saleh said, via Brian Costello of the New York Post. “I think he’s more in line with what Stafford’s career has been. If you can just get him to a place that can surround him with all the pieces to just allow him to play quarterback 10-15 times a game, it would be pretty cool. He’s a solid young man.”

Stafford had not won a playoff game before leading the Rams to a Super Bowl win in his first season after being traded. Any team that lands Carr will be dreaming about the same outcome in 2023.

  1. I don’t agree.
Prior to LA Stafford was better than carr.

Both played on some bad teams.

If the Jets sign car there is a fair chance they won’t even make the playoffs.
For the Jets to make the playoffs Joe Douglas needs to have a good draft.

  2. Can’t wait to see Derek Carr in a Jets uniform in October benched on the sideline while Mike White is saving the day after four INTs from Carr.

This is probably the most hilarious false hype for a NFL player in the history of the game.

  3. Robert Saleh has a point.

I mean, the Raiders are pretty much the same pathetic losing team historically as the Lions.

  4. One HUGE problem there Robert, the Jets aren’t the 2020-2021 Rams! This guy loves hearing himself talk.

  5. The Jets are obviously moving on from Wilson. Why don’t they release the kid instead of leaving him spinning in the wind?

  6. It takes more than surrounding him with the pieces. Stafford and McVay happened because they discovered that they saw the game the same way and were able to complement each other. McVay is a good playcaller and usually comes up with good offensive designs. Stafford understood what McVay wanted on a play but also was able to get them out of bad calls. They really were a team.

Derek Carr would be walking into a situation with Nathaniel Hackett – who he doesn’t know – who has managed exactly one successful season without Aaron Rodgers. Hackett was brought into NY for the same reason that he was brought into Denver: to lure Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets offense in 2022 was a competent QB away from the playoffs. Instead of finding a competent QB, they fired the OC and hired Hackett. There is ZERO reason to believe that the Jets offense will be remotely as successful this year.

  7. If you look in Websters updated dictionary, in line with, it’s now defined as, not even in the same universe.

  8. doesnt sound too interested in rodgers does he. the jets want someone who will be sround a while not a flake holding retirement plans over your head.

  9. Lol – Stafford was far better before he was traded compared to middle of the road average at BEST Carr and proves Saleh knows his seat is getting warmer! Please sign Carr to a 5-6 year for however many Millions & the rest of the AFC-East will thank you!
Not saying he’s not serviceable in the right system & IMHO ends up in Carolina with Frank Reich.

  10. He right and he’s wrong. Right in that he’s a decent QB trying to escape a franchise that wasn’t going anywhere at the time. Wrong in that (if it is the jets) he’s definitely not going to a SB caliber stacked team like Stafford did.

  11. Carr would be a good fit with the Jets. He’s not elite, but he’s far better than anyone they currently have. Besides, the Jets are a team with most of the pieces in place already. What they really need is a quality QB to take them to the next level, and I believe Carr could do that. I hope he ends up in NY. (God knows the Jets don’t need a head case like Rodgers.)

Ya, outside of that insignificant fact that one has been to five Super Bowls, won three, while Detroit has yet to sniff one. Other than that, ya.

Carr had a stacked offense this year. You saw what happened.

While you bring up a good point in regards to “stacked” team, that’s simply not true.

Waller was on IR the entire season. Devante Adams and Josh Jacobs carried the team.

Case and point remains, Derek Carr is an average QB AT BEST!

Get real, the Raiders have been terrible for over 20 years dude…..John Madden is long gone and so is the Raider’s credibility!

  15. We’ll then, the question is whether Robert Saleh is ”in line with” Sean McVey.

  16. Derek Carr played awful last year. I’ve defended Carr for years, but what’s last year’s excuse? One of the best offensive play callers, elite WR, leading rusher, and a great TE and slot WR to boot.

The raiders wasted Carr’s career, but it’s over. Plus, do we think he can handle NYC press after being irrelevant?

  17. Easy Bob. Stafford and Carr are in the same line all right. However, Stafford is near the front and Carr is closer to the middle. Funny, lots of folks like to poke at the Rams ef those picks philosophy, which got them a SB ring btw. However, more and more teams with their window of opportunity open because of good rosters but missing an elite QB continue to try and emulate it. Truth is, the Rams SB year will often be imitated but will likely not be replicated.

  18. If you’re expecting honest answers during this acquisition period, you’re fooling yourself. Nobody is giving away their secrets. Saleh would have said the same exact thing, even if he thought Carr was the worst QB in the world. Saleh didn’t have his right hand on the Bible when he was talking.

  19. Any comparison Of Derek Carr to Matthew Stafford can only be circumstantial – a guy looking for a better team. As players, Carr might be able to hold a clipboard well behind Stafford.

  20. I dont think Saleh did Carr any favors making the comparison because now all of us are dumping on Carr because he doesnt have Staffords are talent. Saleh should have said that Carr has been a starting QB in the league for many years. He can bring a maturity to the Jets QB room and with the talent they already have in place can make them contenders.
