Stetson Bennett on his arrest: It was a mistake, and I understand why it can’t happen

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett has had a series of missteps since helping his team win a second consecutive national championship.

The one he has had to answer the most questions about from NFL teams this week is his Jan. 26 arrest in Dallas for public intoxication. According to an incident report released by police this week, Bennett “hid behind a wall” in a possible attempt to evade police.

Bennett, who was in Dallas for pre-combine training, spoke publicly about the arrest for the first time Friday.

“It was a mistake that everybody’s aware of,” Bennett said. “I understand why that can’t happen. I’ve talked to coaches about it, talked to GM’s. I’ve apologized to my family. That’s who I felt worse about; I felt like I let them down, because no matter where I go now [people are going to know about it]. Even without all this, I’ve got an obligation. I’m the fourth [Stetson Bennett]. You can’t do that if you’re last name is Bennett. I know better.”

Bennett had an opportunity to play in the Senior Bowl, and he would have been in Mobile, Alabama, at the time of his arrest, trying to prove his doubters wrong again. He has received criticism for skipping an opportunity to improve his draft stock, something Jalen Hurts took advantage of in 2020.

“I never. . . It was more so [skipping] the Shrine Bowl. It wasn’t really the Senior Bowl,” Bennett said. “I really wanted to play in it. There was a lot going on at the moment. Discussed with people that were close to me, asked advice. Decided that I needed to go train. I needed to get better. I do wish that I could have but just ultimately decided the other was the better choice.”

Bennett has done himself no favors with his words or his actions. The former walk-on’s stats do speak loudly as he went 29-3 in his college career, including 26-1 his last two seasons, and he passed for 8,429 yards with 66 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

He hasn’t endeared himself with anyone outside Georgia, however, and even some within the state have found reason to chastise him.

During the parade in January to celebrate the Bulldogs’ most recent national championship, Bennett was shown on his phone much of the time. That prompted Atlanta radio host Steak Shapiro to call out Bennett on Twitter, writing, the quarterback “needed someone to tell him to get off his damn phone during a parade and to show some graciousness and appreciation to the fans that were sitting in that stadium.”

The two had a back and forth that included Bennett saying, “Y’all kept telling us how bad we were. Screw it, we got two rings.”

“You know people are entitled to their opinion,” Bennett said Friday. “Yeah, I saw it as a parade for us who won, and I was playing music [for teammates] and trying to have a good time. People took it as I was. . . I don’t really know what people took it [as], but they didn’t like it. I’m sorry about that, but I strictly just saw it as a chance for me, Sed [Sedrick Van Pran] and Chris [Smith] one last trip down Lumpkin on the way to Sanford together, and I just wanted to play the best tunes we could at that moment.”

Bennett expressed confidence in his abilities, but he is projected as a late-round pick and a backup in the NFL, something he hasn’t done much of in his career.

“My job, my obligation is to the team that I’m drafted to, to be the best player for that [team], to learn to play football,” Bennett said. “At the end of the day, I’ve never been [one to make] waves or anything like that. I keep my head down. I play ball. Whatever’s asked of me is asked of me. My job when I get there, you’ve got to be the best player to play, and I know there’s more to that probably here, but at the end of the day, that’s all you can control, and that’s what I will do.”

  1. Hopefully he’s got a head start on his real estate license or becoming an insurance agent.

  2. Can’t see this dude lasting more than a season or two in the NFL. Wrong mindset, not talented enough.

  3. What was he actually arrested for?
Hiding from Police? Why were they looking for him?
He wasn’t driving correct? Was he walking home, after drinking and not driving? What was the actual problem?

  4. Hopefully this doesnt ruin his chances to get drafted and become the scout team QB in the right system.

  5. Disorderly conduct for banging on random people’s doors at 6am. He didn’t know which townhouse to goto.

  6. Arrested for public intoxication and hiding from the police. At least he wasn’t drag racing.

  7. wow, all this about being on a phone and getting arrested for public intoxication? really?? yet… jalen carter is still on the draft board for teams. since when is public intoxication and being immature worse then alleged street racing that potentially lead to someone dieing then leaving and lying to police. but i get it being on your phone at a parade is worse then lying to police. can anyone say double standard

  8. I love the guy as a leader and player, and I think he may be one of those late round picks who has a shockingly great career as an NFL starter. Team should jump all over him on day 3.

  9. Sounds like behavior that hurt absolutely no one and is well within the realm of “learning experience”.

Unless we’re going to see essays like this on everyone’s bad behavior, this seems unnecessary.

  10. I’d be more than happy if AZ takes a flyer on him. With Murray out a few weeks I’d LOVE to see what he can do. He proved himself over and over in college. I was impressed with his play and ability to get past his 1st read. Add to it his ability to throw deep outs and 8 yard corner end zone hits show me he has what it takes to play at the NFL level. People doubted Brock Purdy too.

  11. This guy has some issues and thinks he is so great he won’t need anyone telling him how to play. Ryan Leaf comes to mind.

  12. A college kid drunk walking home. Been there done that. He should move up on draft boards for not driving.

  13. His Cowboy outlaw name alone is worth giving him a shot in the NFL. He was a winner in college!

  14. I understand why he’s drinking, “What if they realize that I am even smaller and lighter than Bryce?”

  15. Get drunk and act like an idiot in public. That’s public intoxication. Geesh.

Not a valid comparison, so no double standard. If you were comparing two instances of street racing leading to a death, or two instances of being on a phone/public intoxication you would have valid comparisons.

  17. why is Stetson Bennett at the combine? is he hoping to move up from UDFA to 7th rounder?

Stetson Bennett is one of those guys who will be in the NFL for 10 years, make $25M dollars, and start 5 games.

  18. Regarding the parade….He was using his phone with Blue Tooth to control the stereo in the vehicle. He was in charge of the music as they took their final ride together down to the stadium in the parade. He wasn’t not being present or in the moment with the fans. There may be a bit of “nobody believed in us” thing going on, but whatever. It was an unnecessary remark by a disgraced former sports talk radio host who now does Foodie Shows on cable TV, Stephen “Steak” Shapiro. Shapiro was fired for a horrible on air skit mocking Stephen Gleason, a very popular former New Orleans Db that is suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and uses a voice synthesizer to speak. ALS prevents your brain from talking to your muscles and your muscles eventually die, while your brain remains unaffected. If you know people that have had ALS, it’s tragic.

Bennet fired back at Shapiro on Twitter, calling Steak “Mr Medium Rare” lol. Side Note: Steak got his nickname while serving as an intern to Eddie Andleman in Boston 20 years ago. Andleman had a 40+ year career in Boston Sports Talk Radio from the late 60’s to 2010.

Regarding Bennett’s public intoxication, he’s still essentially a college kid. He wasn’t driving. Hopefully it’s not his habit. It’s certainly going to cost him. When I was his age they used to call that PC, Protective Custody, where they hauled you in until you sobered up. Now it’s an arrest? Perhaps he was belligerent. Being drunk can do that to you.

  19. The team that drafts this guy in the 1st round will be subjected to some well deserved criticism. He doesn’t have the NFL size. It’s not college anymore. The defensive players are taller bigger faster. He’s going to take a beating. I’m not confident he can lead an NFL team IMO.

  20. Stetson Bennett turns 26 in October.
He’s not a kid, or your typical college player. So yes, it’s much worse than Jalen Carter who turns 22 next month.
You expect stupid stuff from young athletes in their early twenties, not so much from a guy who’s closer to 30 than 20.

  21. I love the guy, but he generally comes off as a drunkard every time I see him, whether it’s after a game or just an interview. Just a college frat guy getting drunk who happened to be good at playing QB.

  22. If this turd had the polish of a Patrick Mahomes then nobody would care. Unfortunately for him his talent level isn’t high enough to overlook criminal behavior.

  23. It’s no big deal. Everyone will soon forget. We were all young at one point. We’ve all done stupid things, especially when alcohol was involved. Some of us are old, and still do stupid things. I prefer to call them human things. We’re human. Nobody is perfect, or everybody is perfect. It depends on your perspective. This kid won two National Championships. That’s something we’ll never forget.

    Zach Wilson 2.0

    ——————————————————————————————-

Bad comparison. Coming into the draft many were projecting Wilson as a franchise QB and he was drafted #2. No one is projecting Bennett to be an NFL starter.

  25. So this drops him from a “steal” in the sixth to Mel Kiper freaking out because he’s still on the board come round seven. Yawn.

why is Stetson Bennett at the combine?
    __________

    Because he was invited.

  27. 25 and still playing college football? What’s next, the 4th grade spelling bee?
