Despite Tua Tagovailoa’s status as starter, Dolphins reportedly will explore “all options” at QB

The Dolphins can say as often as they want that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is their guy. Until they pick up his guaranteed fifth-year option for 2024 or sign him to a long-term deal, the door remains open for someone else to become the guy.

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports that the Dolphins will explore all options at quarterback.

They should. Every team other than the Chiefs, Bills, Bengals, Eagles, and Chargers should, frankly. If a clear upgrade is available, every team has an obligation to explore all strategies for making that change.

For the Dolphins, potentially available upgrades include Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady (if he unretires for the second straight year), and Lamar Jackson, if the Ravens apply the non-exclusive franchise tag — and if Jackson remains available after the 2023 draft concludes. Because the Dolphins lost their 2023 first-round pick due to tampering with Brady and Sean Payton a year ago, they can’t make a play for Jackson until they once again have two consecutive first-round picks to give. That happens after the 2023 draft.

The Dolphins have plenty of time to decide whether to pick up Tua’s fifth-year option. It gives them time to explore free agency, the draft, and the possibility of making a play for Jackson.

Although the Dolphins are currently saying all the right things about Tua, this is a franchise that wanted to trade for Deshaun Watson in 2021 and tried to land Brady in 2022. Hell, Jimmy Garoppolo has said the Dolphins considered trading for him last year; given what it would have taken to get him from the 49ers and what he was due to be paid, Jimmy G wouldn’t have been QB2 in Miami.

Thus, given that the team consistently has explored all options at quarterback in the past, it’s no surprise that they’ll consider all options at quarterback in the present. And in the future — until they have one of the quarterbacks who are among the small group that can’t be upgraded.

  1. Isn’t this what smart teams do? Weren’t the Cowboys applauded for saying they would look at taking a QB as well? Didn’t the Packers take Jordan Love? What’s wrong with exploring QB options?

  2. So…what upgrades are available with Miami’s cap and draft status? Who is available that is better than Tua that you can get without blowing up the team?

  3. Every team should be exploring all options at every position if they’re doing their jobs properly.

  4. As a Bills fan, I’m obviously annoyed. Investing in Tua would be stupid and that’s obviously what I want the dolphins to do. 😡😡😡

  5. The Miami Dolphins have been looking for a QB since the year 2000, nothing new.

  6. Every team, even the Chiefs need to evaluate every player coming out of college. What if Mahomes gets injured? What if Jalen Hurts decides to retire? It’s a QB league. Every team better have a Plan B and a Plan C at QB. You can have a roster full of decent players, but if you don’t have an elite QB, you have very little chance to win. A G.M. should know everything about every QB that comes out of college. When you have to make decisions involving the QB and potentially hundreds of millions of dollars, you don’t want to rely on second-hand information. If your G.M. doesn’t know the QB’s, you’re in trouble.

  7. The Dolphins arent looking for other QBs. Other QBs are looking for Miami’s starting QB spot. We all know Brady did/does want it. Rodgers does, he Freudian slipped it after the Mia/GB game. Lamar is obvious. Watson still pissed he was rejected. This roster is stacked and everyone knows it. With an elite head coach and a top 5 DC.

  8. Welcome to Miami Lamar Jackson! Beautiful weather and some damn good wide receivers! Dolphins going to the big game!

  9. You could probably get BB to deal you M Jones for a 6th or 7th. But, he’ll scream at his coaches when he’s not happy.

As a Ravens fan if we are stupid enough to trade Jackson I would to see him in Miami. That offense would be impossible to stop and the embarrassment of handing them championships would hopefully make Biscotti clean house.

  11. Jackson is the ideal target. 2 firsts is a lot, but that’s about what a rookie QB costs you. The problem is the contract, fully guaranteed is a non-starter.

Brady is second. He’s a free agent and should be affordable.

Rodgers is a fine choice as well. But it depends on the compensation and his contract status.

Carr would be acceptable, if you don’t expect too much from him.

In my view, Tua is the only bad choice. I think Tua should hang it up. If Tua is unwilling, the Dolphins should help him figure it out—it’s not worth it, you’ve got lots of money already. Get a job at ESPN. If they go with Tua, they need a Bridgewater+ backup, meaning somebody better than Teddy. Maybe Minshew would take it knowing he’ll start games.

    Last is

    Zach Wilson, #2 overall

  13. Belichek would snag Tua in a heartbeat. He sure as heck can’t beat him.

    Tua extension incoming..

And Sam Darnold #3 in 2018.

  15. McDaniel runs an offense that is similar to the Niners offense. He was with the Niners when Garoppolo took them to the Super Bowl. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dolphins try to get Garoppolo. He’d be plug and play.

  16. Miami will explore all options for their back-up QB is more likely the truth, but Tua sells and that is why his name is being tossed about as if he is not a trop 10 QB which he is!!!!!

  17. Bills fan chiming in: Miami cannot afford to roll the dice on Tua – he’s one minor ding from ever playing again. That being said I applaud Tua and his work ethic along with his loyalty to Miami especially after how he was treated by Flores & Ross. The Fish MUST explore every available option they have for a CAPABLE QB to either push Tua or become QB2. Unless Miami suddenly changes direction – I don’t know how they can afford to mortgage the franchise on Lamar Jackson or Aaron Rodgers. Carr, Garappolo OR Brady are much better options as I don’t see much available for Grier & McDaniels to draft.

  18. I don’t think a team’s management and coaching staff has been more disrespectful of their starting QB than the current Dolphins management and coaching staff with Tua.

Miami does not have a 1st round pick in this coming draft. What are they going to trade? 2024 and 2025 picks? Hahahaha

  20. Florio, you’re tapped into league sources. With all the incessant polarized Tua talk, what exactly is his trade value? Is his trade value all strictly conditional?

  21. Florio what is you’re problem with Tua? If every player that had 2 concussions retired you would not have a league. Tua is on a rookie contract if he can stay healthy next year the Dolphins will extend him. Dolphins do not have cap space or draft capital this year to replace him.

  22. I think you can add the Jags to the list of teams not needing to look for a QB upgrade. Trevor Lawrence says “hi”.

  23. Yes, Wilson at #2…But also The offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year in 2022 with Gardner and Wilson. Plus, Breece Hall at 36. Little Bill is a good defensive coach, but at the bottom of the league in drafting. The good news is the picks keep getting better every year since Tommy left. LOL!

  24. It would be absolutely idiotic not to. They don’t have the draft capital but Aaron Rodgers there would be something to see.

  25. Florio what is your problem with Tua? If every player that had 2 concussions retired you would not have a league.
    ——————
Tua has had more than two concussions, right? Either way, one of them involving him seizing. There are levels to concussions and that is extreme. Tua has had a significant injury history dating back to college. Nothing left to prove. Save your money and keep what’s left of your health.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dolphins try to get Garoppolo. He’d be plug and play.
    ——————
Plug and play in the sense that you trade one injury prone QB for another? It’s been said that the most important characteristic is availability. I doubt Miami opts for Garapollo.

  26. People complaining about Tua’s health have no issue suggesting Jackson nor Garappolo. How many games have they missed the last two years compared to Tua.

  27. Ok people; so it is like this; I would sign Joe Flacco and Mike White to compete with Tua for the starting job. It Flacco and White beats out Tua, then I would trade Tua ASAP! In this way; Miami will not lose any more draft picks or have to sell the farm trying to land a top notch QB. Remember; when you have an unstoppable offense; you don’t need a top notch QB. But the QB will need to be accurate on the deep balls and throw them in stride so that the WRs don’t have to wait on the ball.

  28. Yes, Wilson at #2…But also The offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year in 2022 with Gardner and Wilson. Plus, Breece Hall at 36

    ——-

Hooray? All that got you what last year? 4th place in the division and out of the playoffs for the 13 th year in a row. Congratulations!

Who is the Jets QB next year?

  29. I definitely don’t want Jackson in Miami, as a lifelong fin fan from early 70’s. Jackson just doesn’t throw a good pass. Yes, he’s a great runner, but his time is limited so to being hit. It’s only a matter of time.

  30. The moron Dolphins’ head coach is looking for the next QB to exploit and to risk life for his legacy.

The Jets magically don’t blow a 4th rd pick and between that and some scatback in the 2nd rd with a blown out ACL, Joe Douglas is Exec of the Year. lol

    Jets:
Super Bowl Titles: 1……..44 years ago and counting
    Conference Championships: NONE
Division Titles: 2……last one 20 years ago. The only one this Century.

    Patriots:
Super Bowl Titles: 6…….all in the 2000’s
Conference Titles: 11…….9 in the 2000’s
Division titles: 22…..18 in the 2000’s

    Belichick:
    Most Super Bowl wins
Mist Super Bowl wins as HC
    3x NFL Coach of Year
NFL All Decade Team for the 200’s and 2010’s
NFL 100 Anniversary All Time Team

Putting Belichick in the same sentence with the Jests , the team he couldn’t get away from more quickly, is comical.

    How’s Zach doing?

  33. Diehard pats fan, but belichick did this every few seasons. Signed free to a wicked big extension, drafted Tommy.

A few years later it was Rohan Davey

Tommy gets hurt, UNdrafted backup Cassell comes in

A few years later it was mallet,

A few years later it was Jimmy

A few years later it was Jacoby

If you’re good at your job, YOU ALWAYS plan for the worst

  34. Consider the source of the report. Josina Anderson <———LOL.

Remember when she said Vic Fangio wasn’t going to Miami.

  35. patsfan4lifedynasty says:

Tanking for Tua hasn’t worked out for Miami.
    ——————————————-
Except they didn’t tank, winning 3 of their last 5 games. Had they tanked then Joe Burrow would be in Miami.

  36. I don’t see the Bengals or Chargers “exploring all their options” at QB. Oh, wait. That’s because they KNOW 100% their guy is the franchise QB. Zero doubt.

  37. What was the purpose of Bryce hanging with all the guys performing, while he’s looking very odd loitering around in his warm up clothes. Why wasn’t he throwing? Ok so he’s not going to participate, so why on earth was he constantly in the group talking to them? It was really creepy. Did his agent make him? Did him having to pack on ten pounds make throwing impossible? Was it simply photo ops to show teams he’s a team guy? Not one GM bought it. I don’t see any team taking Bryce over Richardson.

  38. Dolphins fans won’t want to hear it but tannehill makes the most sense by far.

  39. These arm chair GMs crack me up. Garoppolo is as injury prone as Tua. Lamar Jackson has been injured as well and comes with a hefty price tag. Dolphins don’t have the two 1st round picks or the cap space to pay for an injured QB. The Dolphins also don’t have a time machine to go back and take Herbert or Hurts🤦
