Eagles know they’ll lose players in free agency, think the draft can offset those losses

The Eagles have plenty of key players slated to hit free agency on March 15, and they can’t keep all of them.

Eagles including running back Miles Sanders, cornerback James Bradberry, linebacker Kyzir White, linebacker T.J. Edwards, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, safety Marcus Epps, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, defensive tackle Linval Joseph, offensive lineman Isaac Seumalo, defensive end Robert Quinn, running back Boston Scott and quarterback Gardner Minshew are about to hit free agency. General Manager Howie Roseman says with that many players hitting free agency, some are bound to head elsewhere, and the draft is the way to replace them.

“Are we going to get all the free agents back? We’re just not,” Roseman said, via NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com. “We’re not capable of getting all those guys back, but we also understand we’re in a good situation in terms of picks that we have going forward. We have a lot of guys under contract, not only for this year, but going forward. We’re not going to make excuses for the position we’re in.”

The trade the Eagles made last year for the Saints’ first-round pick looks particularly wise now, as that’s the 10th overall pick and should bring in a talented rookie, or perhaps multiple talented rookies with a trade down. The Eagles’ roster will be different in 2023, but they should be able to keep most of their best players, and add some youth as well.

  1. That window closed. When you take the scrum play out like they will this year that team is gonna be hopelessly falling.

The one year rentals like Gardner Johnson are gonna help more than the draft certainly.

  2. Howie Roseman gambled bigly and lost bigly. That will be hard to recover from for years and years.

  3. The hit will be in the depth of the team. Every good team has quality depth & then enjoys good luck with injuries during the season. That combination is how you get to the big show. Lots of teams are talented. It’s the depth of talent that matters. Tough challenge ahead for the Eagles.

  4. The draft in 2024 is going to be the really crucial one. Already holding the Saints 2nd round pick, probably a top 15 in the 2nd round, comp picks will be critical to success. Eagles should have at least 2 3rd and 3 4th, as well as their own. The Eagles will have 12 picks at minimum to restock all positions.

  5. Call it luck or skill or whatever… but Howie managed to pull off the double hit of going “all in” for the year while simultaneously organizing his chips to build for the future. NFL teams are constantly ping-ponging back and forth between these two concepts and it’s really hard to do either in sound fashion. Somehow, for one year at least, he did both.

  6. Will that plan help them fall into the easiest path to the SB since the merger?

Playing such transcendent QBs like Kirk Cousins, Daniel Jones, the shell of Aaron Rodgers and Taylor Heinikein all year really forged that all-world defense.

  7. The Eagles have drafted well. Once you pay the QB you will be trading some of those 12 picks away or into future years to stay under the cap. Also, it’s been like twenty years since a team in the NFC East has won back to back division titles. Both coordinators are gone now too.

  8. Love all the “other” NFC super fans and haters of every other team. First off the Eagles did NOT risk their future to go all in this year. Nobody knew Hurts would play that well..it was a bonus. Losing players like Quinn, Cox, White are expected especially when the birds have their backups under contract like Nakobe Dean, Sweat and mountain of a man Davis at DT. They have (2) first round picks to draft a CB to replace Bradberry, who had a career yr. Remember he played so bad in NY he was cut. Everyone knew he was a cheap 1 yr rental. The Birds are build to be good for yrs. I think the NFC East will have all 4 teams above .500…

  9. Biggest Eagles free agent is Javon Hargrave

Doesn’t get the pub, or the rep, but he’ll wreck your teams offensive game plan

  10. Everyone here knows the real score ,the Birds will take one step back next season then two steps forward afterward . The schedule will be tougher so the win total will be lower. After their SB appearance , the free agents will come knocking on the door . And they have draft picks stacked up,the head coach got a higher education so they will be in the mix for the foreseeable future. “GO BIRDS”,

The narrative that the Eagles weren’t any good because they had an easy schedule was just plain wrong before the Super Bowl. But to still be stating that after the Eagles went toe to toe with the Chiefs for the entire game is absurd. Guess the Chiefs were just lucky too. Guess all the teams in the NFL are just bad. The Eagles were just the 2nd least worst team in the NFL last season.

Who are the top 5 QB’s in the NFC ?
Who will they face next year that they didn’t see this year that is going to be any better ?

  13. In Howie we trust. He’s like a good wine and is aging quite well as he gets older and wiser. The Eagles are fortunate to have him .
