Fight breaks out late in XFL game between D.C. and St. Louis

Maybe the way to make XFL 3.0 resonate is to have some drama, off-field and on the field.

On Friday, a strange story emerged regarding a player who’d been cut by the Orlando Guardians and then reinstated for allegedly giving the team’s playbook to opponents. On Sunday, a fight broke out late in a D.C. win over St. Louis.

It happened when the Battlehawks’ latest effort to pull out a last-second win ended with a fourth-and-15 onside-kick alternative ended in a sack. Chaos ensued, and three players were ejected.

Then, after the 3-0 Defenders took a knee to cement a 34-28 victory, multiple St. Louis defenders tried to blow up D.C.’s victory formation, sparking another (but smaller) scrum.

The rough stuff happened after St. Louis scored a late touchdown that, with a two-point conversion, cut the margin to six. Following an interception at the one, D.C. quarterback Jordan Ta’amu fumbled the snap. St. Louis recovered, and quarterback McCarron threw a touchdown pass to receiver Steven Mitchell with 22 seconds left. A two-point conversion, on another throw from McCarron to Mitchell, capped the scoring.

For the game, McCarron completed 26 of 42 passes for 262 yards, with four touchdowns and two interceptions. McCarron also lost a fumble.

The Battlehawks still haven’t played a home game. They’ll take their 2-1 record to St. Louis next weekend, for a visit from Arlington. The next week, the Defenders come to town.

If nothing else, the possible continuation of Sunday’s hostilities could generate a little more interest.

  1. XFL is to football as this year’s pro bowl was to entertainment. . . prove me wrong.

  2. There was a decent turnout for that game. I went with a buddy just to see what it was about and we had a good time.

  3. I went to the XFL stadium and a hockey game broke out. Plus how can the Orlando team use the team name Guardians but the NFL Washington front office said Red Wolves would be toooo hard to work a deal with a minor college team.

If you are talking about the Arkansas State Red Wolves, they play football. Sorting out the legalities and money for another (pro) football team to use the name in addition to, or especially instead of, ASU would be a big deal. Having a baseball team and a football team with the same name and in different cities is a lot easier.

  5. Beer Snake! Watched the 4th quarter and it waa.a.fun watch. Crowd was into it and having a great time. Drew good numbers and between the growing beer snake, creative signs, hats, etc. It looked like fun. Players got pretty fired up late too.

  6. Ironically, the Beer Snake will survive while the XFL doesn’t. God bless America!

  7. I tuned into the game just as the game was ending and witnessed it. Then the game ended….best 1 minute of XFL I’ve seen.

That literally made no sense from a copyright legality. It doesn’t matter if it is the same sport or same city from a legal point of view. The Cleveland Guardians had to make a deal with a roller derby team to use the name. Not impossible. The Major League Baseball franchise and a local roller derby club have reached a resolution in a lawsuit filed over the use of the name Guardians, allowing both to continue using it.

The sides on Tuesday jointly announced an “amicable resolution,” an agreement that permits the Indians to continue their changeover to Guardians — a switch that was delayed due to the legal matter and isn’t completely finished.
