Matt Patricia in play for role on Eagles’ coaching staff

Veteran Patriots assistant Matt Patricia, who served as offensive coordinator last year without the title, could be headed to an unfamiliar team, but with a more familiar role.

Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports that Patricia has a shot to land on the Eagles’ coaching staff. He would be, per the report, “presumably” the linebackers coach.

Patricia spent 14 years with the Patriots before becoming head coach of the Lions in 2018. He returned to the Patriots in 2021 in a jack-of-all-trades role, before emerging as the de facto offensive coordinator in 2022.

The Patriots haven’t officially severed ties with Patriots, but there’s a nagging sense that he won’t be back.

The Eagles hired Sean Desai to serve as defensive coordinator following the departure of Jonathan Gannon, who is now the head coach of the Cardinals.

  1. “The Patriots haven’t officially severed ties with Patriots, but there’s a nagging sense that he won’t be back.”

Uh WILL the Patriots be severing ties with themselves?

  2. Did Darius Slay just say the hate he had for Patricia fueled him to be the best? Not sure if bringing him aboard would be a good thing or a bad thing.

  3. Eagles players will be required to wear their helmets backward and have pencils in their face masks.

  4. The big question is will he be bringing his pencil and his rocket science degree? We all need to know the details please!

  5. Tell me you don’t want to return to the SB without telling me you don’t want to return to the SB

  6. As both an Eagles and Patriots fan, I was really hoping to get this man out of my life. NY Giants don’t need a LBs Coach?

  7. Sry pat but we dont want YOUR KIND in philly. We dont take kindly to wannabe BB disciples. The REAL strike against him is the backwards hat and pencil!!!! 😁😉🤣

  8. How funny is it losers who probably work in retail
and whose football knowledge goes as far as Madden, where they mock a guy with 6 rings and who is a very good defensive coach.

Only in 2023 does it make sense to mock a well accomplished professional.

NE fielded a top 10 D for a decade until last year where it finished 11th overall, mainly because BB experimented with Patricia as an OC.

Our country is porked. Dumb people mock success and pretend it makes sense.

There’s a reasons why his defensive knowledge is in demand.

  9. There are lots of good coordinators who don’t succeed as a head coach. Patricia was one of those. As for not succeeding as an OC, I put that on the Patriots, not Patricia. He had a good run only handling responsibilities on the defensive side of the ball (good enough to get a head coaching gig– sorry, Detroit), and to think he’s not capable of being a position coach on defense requires a bit of revisionist history. Clearly there’s not a coaching spot open to him in New England, so if that’s what he wants I wish him well– he’s got one last shot and needs to make the most of it.

  10. Patricia’s would never be hired by the Rams. Total opposite coaching philosophies. One is based on respect for players and a business-like approach. The other is based on disrespecting players.
