Bill Belichick skips the Scouting Combine

It’s one thing for one of the new-age coaches to choose to stay home from the Scouting Combine, reasoning that his time is better spent working on more things than just preparing for the draft. It’s quite another for the old-school dean of coaches to boycott the proceedings.

As noted by Peter King in his Football Morning in America column, Patriots coach Bill Belichick skipped the 2023 event in Indianapolis.

It’s a surprise, to say the least. Belichick has been a mainstay at the Combine, sitting in the stands with binoculars and snacks as he studies the incoming talent.

But there are reasons, in today’s NFL, for coaches to allocate their time differently. And with Belichick choosing not to attend, others may decide to follow his lead.

It’s another reason to keep the event in Indianapolis. Moving it to other markets won’t make it any more convenient, since it’s currently as convenient as it ever will be. If/when it’s harder to get to where they need to go, coaches won’t be more likely to trade a week of productive office work for the topsy-turvy Combine experience.

It’s a real problem from the league. It takes away from the event. If the coaches don’t feel compelled to attend the Scouting Combine, why should anyone else feel compelled to pay attention to it?

  1. Assistants to their specific field of expertise & scouts can still go & gather info as well as report back to coaches…. Seems to me that is where this is going with a coach or two stopping in as well…. Like we, as fans, really care who from our team is there representing it… Probably actually better this way

  2. Pretty sure he’s involved somehow, somewhere. But, he’s also clearly delegating responsibilities to his coaches and scouting staff. Let them do their job..

As much as I never question BB and his processes, obviously have to now based on last years decision with the Patricia thing, but at least he might be admitting he’s not the best drafting coach/GM in the NFL….

  3. He may want to.stay and watch the offensive players at least…

He hasn’t drafted a good one of those since Brady.

  4. My guess is that Bill was TOLD to stay away from the combine… He is a good coach, but should never have ANY say in the players drafted. He is very very very bad at that, historically speaking.

  5. When’s the last time he drafted a player worth a kick? 2004?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Even he stays in Hawaii the whole 2023 season, fans of Belichick will claim how he turns offense around IF it does turn around. (I think Mr. Kraft will do something like he did in 1996, forcing Parcel to draft Terry Glenn when Parcel wanted to draft a defender to help Belichick the garbage.)

Of course, if it is still bad, fans of Belichick will claim that it is because Belichick has not been involved.

    ____________

The dangers of blindly following anybody, even those who have been great in the past. Nobody goes from “perfection” to making Matt Patricia the OC. Tons of other decisons should have been questioned leading up to that point. It’s like never questioning somebody’s driving until they’ve caused a 10-car pileup.

  7. Over the Hill Bill . If I can’t bring my golf cart I ain’t a go’en. You kids get off my turf.

Won’t matter either way. He can’t evaluate talent anyway.

Yes, the greatest GM of all time can’t evaluate talent and you’re a Commie fan.

Absolutely priceless. I wish BB was doing what Washington was doing the last 25 years.

  9. Belichick’s hiring of Patricia will be vindicated if Mac Jones struggles this year under Bill O’Brien.

  10. Belichick going to the combine was producing minimal results for the Patriots. Kind of like Belichick’s plan for the offensive side of the ball in 2022.

  11. I hate Bill and the Patriots but this tells me he trusts the scouts he is sending

  12. Don’t know where people are getting the idea that anyone up here in NE was “blindly following” Belichick with the offensive coaching decisions last year. He was getting blasted on sports radio, all the local websites and the fans that responded to all of that… at least what I observed. I could be way off, but the majority of everyone up here thought it was a horrible idea.

He has no choice, he finally realizes that he is a garbage on offense but he needs 10 wins in 2023 season to keep his job.

  14. While Bill is the GOAT of coaches his GM skills are awful his drat picks i could do better . The problem with the combine is not the combine the coverage of it is the problem having Eisen as the front man is old-tired-boring-add his immature attacks on a certain school equal we don’t need you just run at the end of it . Bring back Mike Mayock we need smart commentary not smart ass commentary.

  15. Brady was never anything more than a little weakling with a tiny arm who had to cheat to be good.

He never belonged in the league.

  16. While Bill is the GOAT of coaches his GM skills are awful

    That is impossible.

  17. I like Dan Campbell’s combine philosophy. The pajama Olympics don’t tell them anything, but brief interviews with players give a look at the person’s attitude about playing football.

  18. Without Brady, Belichick is going nowhere. It’s already been proven and is not up for debate.

  19. Wow I don’t care. I don’t care if my own teams head coach goes. I only care if they draft well.

  20. Belichick coached the East West Shrine Game, from which they have drafted many mid to low round players over the years. It would be hard to match Belichicks record in that range. BB also shows up for multiple Pro Days every year, where players actually perform. As far as the Underwear Olympics go, it has become less and less relavent over the years. The medicals are important, but BB ain’t a doctor. He can also conduct 30 interviews in Foxboro. Why bother going to Indy, for the schmooze fest?

  21. Look at the Tommy fanclub so mad and triggered when I’m spitting facts about their boi lololololol

ZERO winning seasons without elite coaching. Weep then weep some more 🙂

    It worked because of Brady.

Given that Belichick the garbage has been demoted from building offense, still think he made Brady? still think he had magic system?

    Who are the trolls?

It’s just common sense that he lost the benefit of the doubt.

I’m glad he recognized that blunder and corrected it even if Kraft nudged him along in that direction.

  26. The pats know the type of player they like…they’ll evaluate at pro-days and invites

I just LOVE lobbing grenades in the Tommy cult’s safe spaces. 🙂 No regrets. These folks were cheering against my team for the last 3 years so now it’s only fair that I get to get right in their grill and taunt them about their hero Tommy boy finishing his career with a losing season and he was the biggest reason why that happened. It’s fun! And the truth hurts.

    Feel better? LOL.

  29. If Tommy was so awesome how come he isn’t even .500 without elite coaching? (Belichick HOF Lock, Arians HOF maybe)

So weird…. it’s almost like it’s not “all Brady” and he needs coaching like every other NFL player.

  30. An all Brady guy vs an all Belichick guy. It’s a battle of wits, where both sides showed up unarmed.

  31. So weird…. it’s almost like it’s not “all Brady” and he needs coaching like every other NFL player.

Don’t care if he is great or not, just know that the team built by Belichick wouldn’t have won a single SB with any other QB, because the talents he put around Brady wouldn’t be enough for other QB to do what Brady did.

  32. Of course, if you take even 1/3 of the credits for Brady and give to Belichick the garbage, he will be HOF.

If he was an elite coach, if so, his defense wouldn’t be a PAPER TIGER given that he invested so much on defense (as demonstrated in last 3 seasons) that routinely collapsed in big games (you don’t want to remember, do you?)

On offense, we already know what offensive players think of him, don’t we? With such a mess on offense, why didn’t he work on it PERSONALLY IF he was even 30% as good as you think he was?

  33. he has proven to be even a greater GM than coach. built more winners than anyone and did it in free agency era – and he isn’t done. we won’t see anything like it again.

  34. I think the Patriots are laying the groundwork for Bill O’Brien to take over as head coach. I don’t think Belichick is looking too far into the future, so his interest in this group of players is not the same as in years past.

  35. Tom Brady is a puny little weakling who should have been thrown out of the league when he was busted for cheating and tried to cover it up.

Just spitting the truth and only the truth.

  36. To not go as a head coach is one thing, but to not go as the GM is another. To miss an opportunity to meet and interview many of the players that be in the league for years to come is not what I’d consider “doing your job” as the GM. building a profile on all the players allows you to be able to make more educated decisions on them when they become free agents or available for trade. “The more you know”
