Report: Dolphins won’t pursue Lamar Jackson, any other starting QB this offseason

Add the Dolphins to the list of teams who are reportedly not planning to make any overtures to Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson this offseason.

Jeff Darlington of ESPN reports that the Dolphins will not be pursuing Jackson this offseason. Reports have also put the Falcons and Panthers out of the mix for Jackson, who received the non-exclusive franchise tag from the Ravens on Tuesday.

The terms of that tag allow Jackson to negotiate with other teams and the Ravens would have a chance to match any offer sheet that Jackson agrees to with another club. If the Ravens decline to match such an offer, they would receive two first-round picks.

The Dolphins do not currently have a 2023 first-round pick, so they would not be able to negotiate a deal with Jackson under those parameters until after this year’s draft.

While a recent report said the Dolphins will consider all options at the position, Darlington reports extends to saying that the Dolphins will not pursue any other starting quarterbacks this offseason and that head coach Mike McDaniel believes Tua Tagovailoa “is the perfect fit for his system.”

  1. Yo, Lame, you are now finding out that you aren’t as valuable as you think you are. I’d sign any contract right now because you could be on your way out of Baltimore. Don’t talk it over with your agent. Sue him. He likely has cost you millions.

  2. How amazing will it be if 31 teams ban together and prevent a player from pressuring a team for more money… GOOD on all teams staying out of such a mess!

  3. If the Jets are interested in trading for Aaron Rodgers, they should absolutely be interested in signing Jackson.

  4. Tua may not have a cannon, and I go back and forth on him but areas he’s good at: very quick release, he diagnoses plays quickly, gets rid of ball quickly, is accurate. He really is kinda perfect for that scheme. It’s difficult to see Lamar executing as proficiently on those same plays. In fact passing and actual production would probably drop considerably and they’d focus more on running and ball control

  5. I would not be surprised to see New England pursue Jackson. I could see Belichick also hire Greg Roman.

  6. This is sounds like Collusion but this is also coming from the same people that Said Derek Carr was signing with the Jets

  7. Yet articles are saying Atlanta is in the mix for best fit. Miami wants to.kerp Tua until he’s drooling and can’t remember his nane.

  8. Lamar is not even available to play in half the games over the last two seasons. Many believe he could have played in the last week of the season and the playoffs but chose not to. Great strategy by LJ and his agent.

  9. Of course they aren’t. They never were. Only some click baiters and others who knew better put out that obvious bs. Geezus it’s crazy people believe anything.

Once again, a clueless PFT post. Why show your hand now? The Browns said the same thing about Watson that Miami is saying. Although, they have a viable QB vs the Browns. Regardless, Lamar will get his money, 200 million guaranteed. Not sure why people are calling the Ravens smart. First, they should have extended him 2 years ago. Now, instead risking losing him, they should have put together a trade package, get more than 2 first rounders. And maybe they plan to match anyway, who knows? But, smart? The Ravens made Flacco the highest paid player in the NFL, not once, but twice!

  11. The Browns are in ‘cap hell’ cause of that idiotic contract. Everyone knows it.
    Good luck Lamar…

  12. Perhaps Lame could get with Hertz and see if they need someone to run through the airports like OJ Simpson did. With his mobility he could be on skates with Sonic as a potential career. Other than that, he could run for the border!

  15. With the exception of a bridge year with Cam, Belicheck goes with pocket passers, period. Scratch NE along with the Panthers, Falcons, Dolphins, and the 49ers who also run a beneath center QB. The list of teams interested in Jackson just shrank. But it only takes one idiot owner/GM.

  16. I think these teams are waiting for the draft. When some of them don’t get the QB that they want, interest in Jackson will increase.

  17. lmao he thought his Madden cover accolades and Nickelodeon awards would carry him to $55M guaranteed. The other 31 teams would only bargain hunt to sign him.
Lamar needs to fire his agent.

  18. If he leaves the Ravens get (2) 1st rounders.

If he signs the franchise tag, the ravens have a good QB for next year with no financial commitment after.

If he holds out, the ravens still own his rights but can sign a rookie QB or play their backup and still be competitive although not a contender. (See Bengals playoff game last year).

Baltimore fans are fine with any of those 3 for 2023.

  19. looks like Jackson may have overestimated his worth. Lets not forget how many games he has missed the last two seasons. He is exciting and electric but still has a ways to go as a passer. Go Ravens!

  20. How amazing will it be if 31 teams ban together and prevent a player from pressuring a team for more money… GOOD on all teams staying out of such a mess!

    ————–

That would be good for the NFLPA since that is collusion, and would cost the NFL many millions.

  21. It won’t happen this way, but I would love nothing more than to see the Jets overpay for Rodgers just so Green Bay can overpay for Lamar. A guy can dream.

    ====

Collusion? Only 1 team out of 32 wanted to give Watson his contract, but you think more teams should want to give an even bigger one plus 2 firsts? Go ask all 32 teams to hire you and you’ll see the same kind of “collusion”.

Not true, teams have been colluding since the league started without any consequences. They do it the smart way to keep ridiculous contracts like this from happening.

The Ravens have been trying to extend him, at the Josh Allen level, but he’s been turning it down for this pie-in-the-sky fantasy. The team’s been fair and he’s been playing man of mystery.

Flacco went downhill, but they got a Super Bowl trophy and 10 playoff wins out of him. Jackson hasn’t won anything.

  25. Let me get Houston essentially traded Watson to the Browns in exchange for THREE first-round picks in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The Browns find a way to give Watson over 200 million guaranteed.

However, for a former MVP named Jackson, not 1 in 31 other teams will give TWO first-round picks and over 200 million guaranteed as the cap expands!

    Can you spell collusion?

  26. Atlanta? No thanks. Miami? No thanks. Who’s next? Oh wait..no one wants to commit to the “elite” and “no weapons in Baltimore” Lamar? Wow. Tick, tock, Lamar. Tick…tock.

  27. Let me get this straight, Houston essentially traded Watson to the Browns in exchange for THREE first-round picks in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The Browns find a way to give Watson over 200 million guaranteed.

  28. No Franchise with long term goals will pay this man his asking price. We’ve seen his best, his MVP year, and the Ravens didn’t make the superbowl. He’s not a top 15 passer, but he has legs even Mike Vick would be jealous of. It’s complicated, but at the end of the day it’s numbers and time, both work against him.

Not sure if I’m ok with that!

Scenario #1: Probably not going to happen as teams are leary. Either way it’s a rebuild.
Scenario #2: If he signs the circus continues next year and Ravens have reduced cap space this year, plus a disgruntled QB.
Scenario #3: Uncertain QB situation and limited cap space for FAs. However every week 1/17th of the contract goes back on the books so that’s something. All that cap can carryover into ’24 though

  30. Miami’s level of culpability gets raised with each further commitment to Tua. Tua couldn’t make it through college without serious injury. The NFL hasn’t been kinder. To do the same thing over and over, expecting different results, is the definition of insanity. Never mind, he’s learning jiu jitsu.

A prudent approach would be to opt into Tua’s 5th year and sit him on the bench behind Brady. Let Tua get healthy.

Either way, I don’t think Lamar is a fit for Miami.

  31. Bills fan chiming in: Miami MUST ensure they have a solid OL to protect Tua and a capable QB2 (insurance) for them to have ANY success this coming season. I still believe Tua is only one hit away from season ending IR but only time will tell. He’s mentally tough but physically fragile and can only succeed IF the OL keeps him safe. That being said the Fish must still have a QUALITY QB2 just in case & that cupboard is pretty empty.

This is funny. First, all you’re really doing is rooting for billionaires over players (millionaires). Second, it’s those billionaires that cannot help themselves. They pressure themselves. The good ol boy network is in competition with each other for bragging rights.

  33. Miami NOT INTERESTED……..

    (Next week)

Miami introduces Lamar Jackson as their new QB

  34. How many times must you people see teams outbid each other before you stop saying; “no team is going to….”

  35. Doesn’t sound like there are any teams out there to even offer him a contract. Lamar decided to bet on himself and lost bigly. 32 million is a gift..

  36. Man, everyone hates on Lamar, an MVP QB that wins likes 65-70% of his games played, and he’s only 24. Versus AA-Ron, who’s like 74 and eats peyote.

  37. No one is gonna give up two first round draft picks for Lamar Jackson.
    No chance.

  38. The picks and compensation Cleveland gave for Watson was stupid. So far it has paid off in one losing season and a lot of bad publicity. Did that offense look any better with Watson than without him last year? No it did not. The Browns are not good, and they are hamstrung with the cap and no first round picks. Good luck fixing that.

  39. I’m not gonna list all the QBs names, but just think of the QBs that the dolphins, falcons, and Carolina have had on their rosters or pursued over the last 3 years.

Despite my misgivings about Lamar, he is better than every QB (excluding TB12) these chumps teams have drafted, traded for, signed, and/or tried to acquire.

    ==================================

With Jackson they are 45-16 Scoring 27ppg and had the 6th best offense in the NFL

Without Jackson they are 3-9 Scoring 16 ppg and are 31st in offense.

Not sure where you get this “competitive team” nonsense from.

    =====

Yes, he is, absolutely. All those teams, and others too, would love to have him on their team. Or maybe more accurately, would love to have drafted him. But to pay his current asking price to have him on their team is a whole other matter.

  42. Nobody is going to give up two first rounders for a guy who couldn’t finish the past two seasons and his running will surely take a hit as father time begins creeping in. I remember when Michael Jordan’s explosiveness began to fade and he turned around and became a fantastic shooter. Can Lamar do that with his arm? I don’t think so, or he would have shown more by this point.

You a lawyer for the NFL owners? These guys put their bodies on the line and risk life altering injuries. Go get your money. They have a small window to make their money. You’d do the same thing.

  44. BREAKING NEWS: BRADY SIGNS THE FIRST EVER QUAD-ROSTER AGENCY WITH THE NFL. ONE WEEK DOLPHINS; ONE WEEK RAVENS; ONE WEEK PATS; ONE WEEK HOME WITH KITTEN.

  45. Miami should probably look for a starter cause Tua is one hit away from never playing again and they don’t have anyone that can block!

  46. Jackson should sign the tag play out this season and if Miami must move on due to Tua ending his career due to more concussions than they would have the 2 first round picks to go after Jackson in 2024…. Especially if he wants to play for the Dolphins. They do not need him with Tua still playing. Tua is the better option for Miami’s system.

  47. Miami couldn’t do a deal right now even if they wanted to because they don’t have a 1st rounder this year. Lamar will get an offer after the draft. Some idiot like Irsay, Snyder or Tepper will pony up after they fail to get their guy thru the draft.

  48. Who wants an injury riddled QB who possibly quit on his team last year in the playoffs? The MVP season was his high point. He may never make it back to that kind of play in his career, especially after getting paid.

  49. Imagine if Carolina gave Cam Newton a huge guaranteed contract after their Super Bowl appearance….he had mebbe 1 productive year after that

  50. Don’t pursue any QB…..tank next season and get that QB from USC (Richardson).

  51. Your value is what teams will pay you. He hasn’t thrown over 3200 yards. That’s garbage. He’s a rb. Rbs get hurt and don’t play until they are 37 like qbs. He’s won one playoff game. The ravens could have won with an average guy. Lamar isn’t very good. Sorry. Don’t point to his winning percentage. Bal was winning before he got there. They picked him at 32 for a reason. They win a lot. No wr want to go block for Jackson when they can catch the ball anywhere else. They are built the way they are BECAUSE of lamar. Wr demand trades. He’s finding out that his value is not what he thought. Baltimore can sit back and wait for him to come back with his tail between his legs

You guys are hilarious! So, now the Flacco contract was a good thing? For years you remarked how stupid the Ravens were for doing that because they didn’t win anything afterwards. Now the Flacco contract was worth it? What a load of crap! I swear, you guys lose all sense of reality when it comes to this guy. And don’t give me inquiries, playoff records, quit on his team. The vitriol has been there since the day he stepped foot on an NFL field.

  53. Ravens manage their team very well. Players like Elite Lamar are thoroughly replaceable thru smart drafting. Some knucklehead team will pay him a lot, never make it past a wild card round, and Jackson will be a 30 for 30 episode of what could have been, but didn’t.

  54. It’s not a matter of if, but WHEN, Tua gets another concussion. And the next one will most likely end his career because the media will eat it up.

  55. Maybe Tennessee will pursue Jackson. He can play QB and RB at the same time after Henry is traded.

  56. Smart thing to do would bring back Tannehill as backup, Guy can definitely still be elite with weapons which we have now.. See Tannehill with AJ Brown, so if Tua does miss games i’d still like their chances.

The other option would be trying to get Cooper Rush from Dallas whom we could have for damn near free if they would of been smart when dallas cut him.

  57. Tua won’t make it through a full season. Lamar’s game will not age well. Ross should sell the team.

  58. Reworded, they are going to pursue a top notch backup with high upside.

  59. The key words being “will not pursue Jackson THIS OFF-SEASON.” They’re going to see if Tua can stay healthy in ’23. Maybe NEXT off-season? Nope, don’t think so.

And instead of giving two 1st’s to BAL when when he’s tagged again next year, they’ll probably use those two 1st’s to trade up and select the top QB in the ’24 draft. Which is exactly what BAL (or any other smart team) would likely do.

  60. The Detroit Lions would be a fool for not inquiring about Lamar Jax! Lamar plus Ben Johnson straight fire!!!

    31 felonies.

Do you feel he same way about Buffalo and Josh Allen? His cap hits are going to crush the Bills, but he’s white so it’s different right?

  62. Since Lamar wins more games at starting QB than he loses, a team he’s on in a .500 division has a ticket to the playoffs.
