Which quarterback would you prefer, Daniel Jones or Kirk Cousins?

While discussing during Monday’s PFT Live the contract impasse between the Giants and quarterback Daniel Jones, a question emerged organically and spontaneously.

If you’re the Giants, would you trade Jones for Kirk Cousins, and if you’re the Vikings, would you trade Cousins for Jones?

Chris Simms responded in the moment by basically saying the Giants should want to keep Jones and the Vikings should want to keep Cousins. But here’s the broader question, applicable regardless of current team affiliations. Would you prefer Jones or Cousins?

Simms tweeted (more accurately, someone tweeted for him) a poll question on the issue. Cousins has generated more than 60 percent of the vote. Which is a surprise for many. Jones did well without Justin Jefferson or anyone close to Jefferson in skills and abilities. Also, Jones has the ability to extend plays with his legs, or to justify designed runs in order to keep a defense on its heels.

Yes, Jones had only 3,205 passing yards, while Cousins had 4,547. But Jones had 708 rushing yards, and Cousins had less than 100.

And while Jones had 15 touchdown passes to Cousins’s 29, Jones threw only five interceptions. Cousins threw 14 — one behind the league-leading 15 from Dak Prescott and Davis Mills.

Finally, Jones beat Cousins in his own building in the playoffs.

So while the Giants are better off keeping their guy and the Vikings are betting off keeping theirs, Jones’s overall game better fits today’s NFL, where the best quarterbacks can run the play that’s called, and can make chicken salad on the fly when the play that’s called goes to hell.

Maybe that’s why Jones is looking for more than $45 million per year. Even if he won’t get it, the request isn’t all that ridiculous, given where the game and the market are going. And, frankly, the blowback to his contractual demand may have influenced the outcome to the Jones vs. Cousins poll question.

  1. If I had either QB I wouldn’t make a financial commitment to them. I would draft a QB until I had it right. Personally I want my starting QB to be able to will his team to victory should the defense fail. All the great ones can do it. Neither of these QBs can. Why pay them like they can?

At this rate Burrow is going to get 70 million a year.

  2. Neither. Why in the world would someone pay Jones 45 mil/year. They should focus on keeping Barkley.

  3. That’s like being asked would you rather have a root canal or a colonoscopy?

  4. If either of them are the answer to your question, you are asking the wrong question.

  5. Yikes! That’s like asking if I’d rather have a paper cut or a stubbed pinky toe. 😣

  6. Jones did not beat Kirk cousins. Jones beat that sorry Vikings defense that’s being demolished as we speak for a rebuild.

  7. Still not convinced DJ is worth 45MM per year, but would take him over Cousins any time.

  8. As a Vikings fan, if we’re getting Jones, I have no interest in paying him what he thinks he’s worth, let alone as much as Kirk Cousins.

  9. I take neither.

Maybe Daniel Jones for one year on the non-exclusive tag.
No way I’m paying him 40 plus.

As for Kirk, from what I saw a lot of his production came from chucking it to Justin Jefferson in double and triple coverage

  10. Kirk Cousins. Even coming from a Vikings fan. Daniel Jones’ best stat year pale in comparison to Cousins’, obviously. Why is this a question?

  11. Both are guys that if a team pays them market value then there’s close to no chance to compete for a title.

  12. Kirk, easy decision for me. I’ll never be sold on any qb that also is a rb. Just too much injury risk to cough up $40+m.

  13. Both of these guys get so much hate but Daniel Jones must be the most hated on I’ve ever seen.

You would think this guy went around kicking puppies and kittens or something.

  14. That is like asking if someone would rather have a screw driver stuck in their right eye or left eye. Horrible choice either way.

  15. Kinda left off some important stats like Yards Per Attempt , anyone can have low int numbers throwing nothing but check downs . But give me the guy who can read and react to a defense the best , much like these combine QBs all the ability in the world won’t help much if you are not quick witted enough to react to what a defense is doing and don’t see the field . But being able to run for cheese yards does help until someone takes your wheels out.

  16. Daniel Jones asking for $45 million is a ridiculous request.
He looked better under Brian Daboll last season, but that just makes one wonder what that coach could do with any serviceable quarterback at a cheaper price.
It’s understandable why elite quarterbacks get absurd money, but those that are barely mediocre JAGs, it surely does not.

  17. We cannot ignore potential and age. You take Jones if you think your team needs a few years to get there. You take Cousins if you think your team can make a run in 1-2 years. Ignore the head to head playoff game, as the Vikes D was the worst. Nobody believed either team was making a run last year. Now, would I pay Jones $45 mil a year? Don’t be ridiculous. $35 is what he will get, and even that is too high. But if you look at the free agent market, your only choices are to pay Jones and Cousins, or draft a rookie.

  18. Zero chance I’d pay more than $10M/ year on Jones. How on earth can you consider paying big money to a QB who threw only 15 TDs in a season? Now a days we see some QBs do that during a hot 4 game stretch.

  19. If given a choice, I’m taking Daniel Jones. We just saw them head to head and cousins was too scared to throw past the sticks in the do or die moment of the game.

Plus, cousins has had great weapons every year of his Vikings career and he’s made the playoffs twice?

But let’s also just say I’m glad my team doesn’t have to pay Daniel Jones $40M.

  20. If I had to choose?
    Jones.
    We know what Cousins isn’t.
We’re not sure how much “isn’t”is in Jones.

  21. Kirk Cousins doesnt’ play defense. Wouldn’t have been a close playoff game if the purple would have put an, even, mediocre defense on the field. The result of the Eagles/Giants game further substantiates this take…

  22. As a Viking fan of 50 years, the Cousins years have been the worst.
His combination of immobility, lack of fire, inability to elevate the team, sack taking, and high price have waned my connection to a team that I watched sine 1972.
He ranks up there with Les Steckel, Leslie Frazier, and Brooks Bollinger as Vikings buzz killers.

  23. I honestly can’t believe Daniel Jones is getting so much attention. His rookie season is still his best season to date. He fumbles left and right. I understand he hasn’t had the weapons but I haven’t seen anything that says he’s worth 25mil. If it wasn’t for the Vikings defense the giants would’ve got smoked in the first round. Taking cousins all day.

  24. Cousin’s becaue he will gone sooner, – shorter deal and optomism for the next man up.

  25. Kirk is going into this off-season having the same Offensive Coordinator for the FIRST TIME in his career. I would rather see just how hot he can get in year 2 with KOC. While Kirk can’t carry this team on his shoulders, he is certainly capable of getting redhot when he gets peaved off.

  26. For that kinda money I’d rather sign two all pro receivers and just draft a rookie qb.

  27. I can’t believe this is even a question. Daniel Jones had 1 good season. Cousins had what, 8 or 9? I need to see sustained success until I can give the nod to him. I just get a feeling someone is going to give him a lot of money and he will suck. Also, Jones didn’t “beat” Cousins. The Giants beat the Vikings. This is a team game not prize fighting.

  28. Makes you wonder if the Minnesota Vikings are a dark horse to possibly coax/persuade Tom Brady out of retirement. Tom Brady would be a major upgrade over Kirk Cousins.

  29. I’d take Jones if I HAD to pick one, but I’d rather have either of the college kid QB’s in this year’s draft! I had enough of Captain Kirk’s great play (NOT!) down the field until he gets to the red zone where he crashes and burns. Smart businessman, the way he manipulated the Redskins, but lousy quarterback from 20 yards in. Also, he’ll play fair until the end of the year where AT BEST he might win one playoff game. Just another overpaid losing QB. No thanks. At least with Jones you’re not sure what you’ll be getting OVER TIME. With Cousins you KNOW what you WON’T EVER be getting… a Superbowl!

I’ll call Brian Daboll and tell him you said he’s wrong about Daniel Jones. Also, stop with the fumbling. The last 2 years he’s fumbled less than just about any QB. Prescott, Lawrence, Murray, Allen, Fields and Cousins have about the same number of fumbles in one year as Jones has in two.

I can’t imagine just how frightening a peeved off Kirk Cousins must be. 🤣

  32. Cousins has shown consistency with a string of 4000/30+ td seasons as well as he’s been quite durable. His upside is limited and has shown he isn’t a franchise guy. His salary bogs down the possibility of the Vikings building a championship team around him. He is what he is.

Jones has been pretty terrible up until last year when he shown flashes of athleticism and playmaking ability while limiting his turnovers. He has a bigger upside than Cousins but a bigger downside as well. He has only really had 1 decent season and even then he only threw for 15 td’s.

I don’t think i’ve seen enough from Jones to consider him a better option than Cousins at this time.

  33. Apples to Oranges comparison. One played half his games in a dome to an elite wide receiver. The other outdoors to practice squaders. You always chose the younger more athletic option.

  34. Daniel Jones is Alex smith

In fact he ran the same offense last season Alex did in KC.

Daboll got all the credit but that was Kafkas offense he brought from KC

  35. This isn’t even close. Jones has one AVERAGE season and wants elite money. Cousins has consistently been a top ten QB for years. Is he a hall of famer? No, but he’s well above average, which is a lot more than can be said for Jones.

  36. Cousins is just a bit more average-er than Jones. There are what, maybe 5 elite QBs in the NFL? We can’t all blink our eyes 3 times and have Patrick Mahomes appear in our favorite team’s jersey. The comments above are cute and all, but in the real world of the NFL there are more average QBs than elite or lousy ones. Cousins is durable, accurate, non-controversial and he’s not Carson Wentz. Tt could be better, but it similarly could be much worse.

  37. Daniel Jones is not even a QB – he is a running back who barely can throw.

  38. None of the above! They arent the last 2 quarterbacks on the face of the Earth! Cousins is a washed up mercenary and DJ is salivating at the chance to become a mercenary, but nobody wants to hire him.

  39. Here’s a guy who throws for 200 yards a game and 15 TDs and leads his team to a 9-7-1 record after they were terrible his whole career there and now we’re supposed to think he’s this up and coming star NFL quarterback. He’ll be backup before he turns 30. Kirk Cousins has his limitations but I want a quarterback who can pass the ball and not run much over a quarterback who can’t pass but can run. Why not just make Saquon Barkley the quarterback? Cousins led eight fourth-quarter comebacks this season and won 11 one-score games. He deserves a lot of credit for that. People act like every pass he completed was a prayer to Justin Jefferson but that isn’t close to being correct. Meanwhile, they’re ragging on him because he didn’t throw a prayer to Jefferson on fourth down in the playoff game. Prayer or checkdown, they both had about the same chance of getting a first down so who cares? I’m looking for a succession plan to replace Cousins but nobody in their right mind should want Daniel Jones as the replacement.

  40. Cousins has his money in the bank. I’m certain he’d say “Do whatever you want.”

  41. The difference between Kirk Cousins and Daniel Jones is that one of these two is going to improve while the other is on the way down (Cousins is going to be 35 prior to this upcoming season) and has seen his best years go by.

Give Daniel Jones the Vikings’ receivers and a better O-Line and he becomes a much more productive QB than Cousins. I don’t love the $40 Mil. But the Giants are betting on Jones’ upside. Daniel Jones may not have even touched the surface as yet, but Cousins has. To finish a season at 13-4 and lose in the first round of the playoffs says it all. Cousins’ lack of mobility (and dreadful secondary) cost the Vikings the game. They were an embarrassment to Vikings fans, losing to the upstart Giants at (home) US Bank Stadium!

  42. Daniel Jones has to win at least half the games the Giants play vs. Dallas and Philadelphia in 2023 to even earn a modicum of his $40 Mil salary!!!

  43. If you also get last season’s O-Line and defense in Minny it doesn’t really matter who’s QB, even Montana, Brady or Mahomes wouldn’t be able to overcome that.

  44. Amazing how many “Cousins doesn’t play defense” people are out there. Those people don’t realize that overspending on mediocre quarterbacks, running backs, slow #2 receivers doesn’t leave much to pay for defense. And…the overpaying for a safety doesn’t help either. Cousins needs to make about 20 million so a decent team can be built around him

  45. Kirk plays on a talented team with weapons: one of the top rb’s in the game who can run, catch and is illusive; thee best receiver in the game and three very talented tight ends.
They make him look good and he knows how to make them look good.
Jones is mentally still struggling with his early failures and still has issues, run or pass this play? Cousins hands down because he has confidence in himself.

  46. Cousins is easily better, and while Jones is younger, he’s not better AND they will end up costing about the same.

  47. I believe this sort of choice is often referred to as a Cornelian dilemma.

Yes KC has been blessed with receivers but his defense is another story. Since 2018 the Vikings defense has ranked 3rd, 15th,25th, 29th and 31st in passing defense and 17th,13th 27th,26th, and 20th in rush defense and in the same time span the offensive line has given up the 3rd highest pressure rate in the league. The defense also ranked 10th,6th, 20th,24th and 30th in points allowed per game. Ironically in 2018 and 2019 Cousins threw for 30 TD’s and 10 int 4300 yards with a 99.7 rating and and 26 TD 6 int 3600 yards and a 107 rating. Cousins has not been the problem. Before KO became coach it was Zimmers conservative coaching that cost them and his dislike of Cousins, after 2019 Zimmers defense turned to garbage and that caused the issues, not Cousins. If a team averages 25 points a game but gives up 28 points per game its hardly the QB’s fault. The Tom Bradys of the world can overcome that but there are very few of them ever to play the game.

    ++++++
Is he confident he’ll get his next playoff victory before Jones?
He’s a 35 year old QB with one playoff win in hand.
Who lost a playoff to the other guy. Despite the better team.
    yay for Kirk.
