Bobby Slowik: We’re going through a process at QB, Jimmy Garoppolo a part of that

Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik worked as the 49ers passing game coordinator last season and that gave him a lot of insight into a player who is set to hit the open market as a free agent next week.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been mentioned as a possible target for the Texans once teams can start negotiating with players from other teams. On Wednesday, Slowik said at a press conference that the team is discussing free agent options and that Garoppolo is one of the names that will be on the table.

“We have a process that we go through, Jimmy is obviously a part of that process,” Slowik said, via Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle.

Whether they sign a veteran or not, the Texans also have the second overall pick of the draft and are expected to use it on a quarterback. Slowik was asked about a rookie quarterback being able to run his offense and referenced another 49ers quarterback. Brock Purdy handled the job well enough last season and Slowik said “how you structure the entire thing” is the key to making things work for a rookie.

  1. Garoppolo could be a very good bridge quarterback.
The Texans should wait until the 12th pick NFL Draft to obtain a quarterback for the future and/or wait until the 2024 NFL Draft.
The 2nd pick in the 2023 NFL should be used for a sure thing defensive star.

  2. As a Texan’s fan, I would be fine with Jimmy G. coming to Houston! We take a QB with the #2 pick, and he can sit behind Jimmy G. for a year or two.

  3. I doubt Jimmy G wants to be in another situation where he’s looking over his shoulder at his replacement, but maybe like 500k people who left CA the last two years he’ll do anything he can to leave.

  4. The Texans should get Jimmy Garoppolo and use the 2nd and 12th Pick to help the Rest of the Team get better! Here in Houston we are “Weary” of losing games. – Please, Do Not Pick Bryce Young!

  5. Not a good option for the Texans, better to save the money and take the growing pains (and draft picks) while finding the right guy.

  6. With Jimmy G and Ryans as coach the Texans will compete immediately to win that division.*

    *If Jimmy can stay healthy.

  7. If the Texans DON’T take Anthony Richardson they deserve what they get. He will be the star of this QB class. 2-3 yrs from now he will be one of the top-5 QBs in the league if he gets any support at all.

  8. Imagine if the Texans swing and miss on a QB with their 1st rounder. It amazes me how these losing organizations assume they can do the hardest thing come draft time. It’s the pick a development, too. If you’re going with Garapollo, you might as well couch your bet and draft a QB later on. Take time developing the QB. If you have a good/stable system in place… Mr. Irrelevant can thrive.

  9. It’s not rocket science. He’s a great fit with that coaching staff and has the requisite chops to command respect in the locker room. He’s more of a winner than that franchise has seen in the entirety of it’s existence.

I doubt Jimmy will care if he’s a 2-3 year bridge when the numbers come out. He’ll get more than Danny Dimes and Geno, for sure, and the team will structure the deal so he can walk after year 3. That’ll make over $200m that he’s made in his career. Not too shabby.

Pure bust. For all of the athletic ability and combine show he just does not play well. Cannot read defenses very well, reacts slow and is inaccurate when rushed. I do not get the hype but if any of you actually watched him lose games last year and watched him play, you would not want him to be drafted by your team.
