Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith was injured for most of last season and is due a $13.6 million base salary with nothing guaranteed this season, which puts his position on the roster in peril. But it appears that something will get worked out for Smith to remain in Dallas.

Smith and the Cowboys are working on a reworked contract that would bring him back for his 13th season with the Cowboys, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

A two-time first-team All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowler, Smith has been among the best offensive linemen in football for much of his career. But last year he suffered a torn hamstring in training camp, and when rookie Tyler Smith played well in his place, it raised questions about whether Smith would have a future in Dallas.

A 2011 first-round draft pick, Smith has played his entire NFL career for the Cowboys.

  1. Great. Besides playing 3 games next year due to injuries, he’ll at least be paid to hold the clipboard for the OC. Sigh. Dang it Jerry, just because you love these guys doesn’t mean you need to keep them on roster until they’re 3 years past their prime

  2. He has not played a full season since 2015.Restructer his deal for reasonable money, and let him be the swing tackle, and maybe starting right tackle until Steele is ready.Who else we got Josh Ball,Matt Walesko BUSTS.Let him retire a Cowboy-Potential ring of Honor?

  3. Tyron Smith may still be serviceable but he’s not the same player he used to be. I’ve watched as his play has declined over the years.

  4. This is awesome! The difference between Jones and Walsh or belichick? They didn’t deal with emotions. They traded or cut players before they were past their prime.

  5. Seems he’s basically hurt every year for the past 8 or 9 years. How can one be labeled “Among the best” if they’re missing half the season or a quarter of the season? When he was healthy (For about 4 or 5 seasons) he was pretty good. I’m sure because he’s a Cowboy, he’ll get Hall of Fame votes. But if he was on say the Panthers or Lions, he’d be considered “Above Average”

  6. Just when I think Jerry can’t get any dumber, he pulls a move like this. Tyler Smith is the future at left tackle and rightfully so. Tyron can barely get out of his stance.
