In an Aaron Rodgers trade, should the Packers and Jets dust off the Brett Favre trade terms?

The Packers, by all appearances, want to move on from Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is at least exploring the possibility of playing for the team that was bought and paid for with Big Pharma profits.

So if the Packers trade Rodgers to the Jets, what should Green Bay expect?

With Rodgers due to make nearly $60 million this year, with no guarantee he’ll play in 2024, and with the Packers ready to turn the page to Jordan Love, the Packers should be reasonable. They should be fair. They shouldn’t create a major roadblock to the continuation of Rodgers’s career.

So here’s an idea. Since the two franchises are back at the table on a trade for a franchise quarterback 15 years after the deal that sent Brett Favre to the Jets, why not dust off the Favre trade terms?

They went like this: Fourth-round pick in 2009 if Favre played fewer than 50 percent of the snaps in 2008; third-round pick if Favre played 50 percent of the snaps; second-round pick if Favre played 70 percent of the snaps and the Jets made the playoffs; first-round pick if Favre played 80 percent of the snaps and the Jets made it to the Super Bowl.

The Packers eventually got a third-round pick.

Why not use the same terms here? It seems fair and reasonable. (That said, the Jets may not want to tie up four rounds of draft picks in 2024, and the Packers may not want to wait until 2024 to get value for Rodgers.)

In the end, the package should be realistic and flexible. Maybe a mid-level pick for 2023 with more for 2024, based on playing time or accomplishments in 2023. Maybe something for 2025 if he plays in 2024.

Regardless, the Packers shouldn’t put their thumb on the scale. If they’re ready to move on, they should do something that gives them a little something on top of the bigger thing they hope to engineer — the dawn of the Jordan Love era.

  1. If they got nothing in return, it would still be a win for the Packers. Maybe his fortunes would change and he can win his second SuperBowl in NY. That’s OK. His act has become tiresome in GB. Please make this happen.

  2. The Packers may as well include Love in the trade, he’ll be sent to the Jets sometime in the future anyway.

  3. Jets (or any other team) should just offer a 7th round pick take it or leave it type deal. It is Green Bay’s management and head coach that needs to get out of this mess they solely created and every other team knows that. Really they should ask GB to send like a 2nd round pick and pay some of his salary in exchange to take him of their hands…for that 7th rounder

  4. Not wasting my time thinking about this for like the 5th straight year. He’s playing in GB next year just as he always does.

  5. 5th round pick + Wilson, and a 6th in next years draft if Rodgers continues player past this year.

  6. Favre was 10 years removed from his most recent MVP season. Despite the many similarities between the players and situations it’s definitely going to cost a lot more for Rodgers than what was given up for Favre.

  7. So the media has influenced a possible trade, now the media is setting up how the trade should happen and the details of such a trade. Gotta love Pft playing every side and pretending to be anymore more than rumors.

  8. The packers should have traded him when they drafted Love. Stop being obsessed with the perfect QB transition. Do the right thing and move on from a guy who’s not in your plans.

It’s like keeping a girlfriend until you find someone better. Just move on.

  9. Lol. Boy how quickly people forget. Not liking someone personally shouldn’t bias your judgement on how one performs. Packer fans are strange. In 10 years it’s quite possible they’ll be begging for Rodgers. Management and coaching are the main reasons they’ve only won 2 super bowls in 30 years. Not QB play. Because as I believe, GB management is happy to be competitive. Not in it to win it.

Have you watched football before 2015? When the Packers traded Favre he was months removed from finishing 2nd in MVP voting and lead the team to a 13-3 record and an OT loss in the NFCCG.

  11. GB should trade the J E T S a draft picks advantage. They want to dump the salary…..it should cost them

  12. The Favre trade scenario is so different from the Rodgers scenario that suggesting the terms be identical is ludicrous. Favre came back to the Packers in the summer in an effort to mess with the Packers, and was traded in August. The Packers were so limited since teams already had quarterbacks all set, and they needed to move him for Rodgers sanity. Far different from this scenario considering Favre had not sniffed an MVP season for over 10 years (definitely not playing at Rodgers current level), and the level of cooperation between Rodgers& Packers.

  13. How much is the Greatest (regular season) of all time worth? If the Jets want ARod to win another MVP on his way to a 1st round exit they better pony up.

  14. Inflation in the value of a QB hits here too. Favre was a long time ago, QB’s are worth more now.

Regarding the cash – Jets have it. Paying 60m (and only getting a 15m cap hit) for Aaron compared to what Geno’s getting paid this year – you can’t complain.

Packers will get the best they can but at the end of the day – Rodgers wants the ego boost of knowing he was traded for a pile of capital too.

Packers also still have leverage – Rodger is under contract. Either he goes along and the Jets go along or they simply say “meh, nope, not trading – AR can sit, stay or retire. Doesn’t matter”

  15. No I’m worried, I completely agree with Florio. More trades should be like this

  16. Umm…..thanks for the help Mike, but I’ll leave the details for any upcoming trade negotiations to the professionals. 😉

  17. One thing on Rodgers is he has a long history of using slights no matter how real or imaginary to provide fuel. A trade may be the best thing for both parties in that GB moves past what has become at best a fragile relationship with their most important player and the receiving team gets a motivated Rodgers to prove all the ‘haters’ in the GB org and beyond wrong. As a Packer fan absent a change in his behavior and his year-long commitment to the org I don’t want last year’s Rodgers back. Was very telling to me of a problem that not just Davante but also St. Brown and MVS took the opportunity to exit last year. Rare you see receivers run away from a HOF QB much less one coming off an MVP – maybe it was his posture in the off season that spooked them but that is again on him or maybe it is what they saw out of Love which if he is terrible will got Gutty and LaFluer their jobs. High stakes decision making in flight for sure!

  18. It’s time for the spoiled rotten Green Bay fan base to embrace mediocrity.

  19. Foolish story! The Packers want more than that in a trade! A third rounder in 2023? Pack sand!

  20. Rodgers is just yanking people’s chains. He will play in Green Bay this year. He just wants, and loves, the attention.

  21. I bet the Packers are envious of all the stellar, super bowl winning moves our Vikings’front office has made over the years . . . oh wait.

  22. A trade has to work for both teams. It also has to work for Rodgers, who I’m sure does not want to be traded for end-of-the-garage-sale prices. The Jets do not have any high “surplus” picks (rds 1-2) this or next year. A first rounder this year, then a second-rounder next year if AR commits to playing in 2024 seems pretty fair for everyone. (Speaking as a GB fan, who wants to see JL in 2023, here)

  23. Sorry, but there’s been a lot of inflation in the last 15 years, nowhere more than in QBs. Packers will want at least a first or two seconds.

  24. Nope! Rodgers is more of problem child than Favre was, and that’s saying something. Plus Favre still (theoretically) had a few years left in the tank where Rodgers is likely done after one more year. If I’m running the Jets, and knowing that GB wants to be done with Rodgers, my offer would not include anything higher that a 4th round pick. If Green Bay presses for more .. I (the Jets) might consider throwing in Corey Davis since the Packers need WRs.

  25. The NFL would love to have the Jets relevant and a playoff team. I don’t think they get Rogers for a 3rd round pick no matter his contract.

Farve was a shell of his former self when he went to NY and GB had Rogers in waiting.

NY needs Rogers more then GB needs to be rid of him. The finances are high but short term. I will be surprised if NY doesn’t pay it’s #1 in 2023 and 2024. If they win the super bowl its the 32nd pick. What team wouldn’t pay two number ones for a super bowl?

  26. I’m not convinced Jordan Love will be the next face of the Packers. But if Rodgers really does go to the Jets (or the Raiders), it’s likely Green Bay will be in position for a top 1st round pick next year. Even if Love looks promising, his lack of experience would make him a rookie QB. With a few exceptions, a QB’s first season usually contains a lot of lessons learned the hard way.

  27. There no way that GB getting 1st pick from Jets due to Rodger massive salary cap. Less than 2nd round pick will do the job done.

  28. I think you’re missing some details, like the poison pill if the Jets were
    To trade him to Minnesota.

  29. so the packers think jordan love is the answer, have they seen his body of work since he has been with them? the question is why would rodgers go to the jets?? i alsdont understand why people hate on rodgers so much? you never hear of him in trouble off the field, sure maybe he is a bit eccentric when it comes to darkness retreat and peyote trips but that is all legal stuff that he is doing. youi never hear of a teammate talking bad about him even ex teammates. he is a different guy like so may intelligent and talented people are that does not make hima bad person or any less of a qb, does it? we dont have to agree with his thoughts or words but you cant take away how he is an all time great qb and still has gas left in the tank, but GB would rather get rid of him and not be a perenial contender. he is making a big mistake if he goes to the jets, what weapons do they have? just 1 green team with issues to another, makes no sense and hopefully he is just playing with the jets to get back at woody johnson and JNJ. that would be hilarious. but seriously i cant see rodgers liking the NY media.

  30. The Favre and Rodgers trades are apples and oranges. First, Favre was in much worse physical shape than Rodgers is. (Remember the pummeling Favre took in that Saints game?) Second, Rodgers is better than Favre. Third, QBs are in very high demand right now, and really good ones are scarce as hen’s teeth. The money situation is also very different.

  31. A possible fourth round pick for a guy who has won two of the last three MVPs? No no no no no.

  32. The Packers should take an offensive weapon or an offensive lineman away from Rodgers, lol.

  33. I mean, is it too much to ask to have a few NFC teams in the mix for the top QB’s?

If Rodgers goes to NY, the balance of power between the 2 conferences when it comes to QB’s will be almost cartoonishly lopsided. The AFC East alone, w/ Tua, Rodgers & Allen. Add in Mahomes, Burrow, Lawrence, possibly Lamar.

Meanwhile, the best QB’s in the NFC are probably Prescott and Hurts. Both are really good, but it’s nowhere near the strength of the AFC for that all-important position.

  34. Have you watched football before 2015? When the Packers traded Favre he was months removed from finishing 2nd in MVP voting and lead the team to a 13-3 record and an OT loss in the NFCCG.
    ==========

Shall we count the times Favre threw the Packers season away?

2001 – 6 INTs vs the Rams.. prob would have lost to them regardless.. but 6 INTs??!
2003 – his first pass of OT… throws the go route, into double coverage.. to BDawk
2004 – 4 INTs at home vs the Vikings.. 3rd time in 4 seasons he dropped a 50 rating
2007 – his final pass as a Packer, picked off

You would say THIS guy is capable of winning a Super Bowl?

Most of this stretch he had an absolutely dominant O-line, and a great RB.

  35. Nope! Rodgers is more of problem child than Favre was, and that’s saying something.
    ==========

The Packers did everything possible to keep Favre retired. The Commissioner had to intervene on his behalf.

Pretty funny, they were allegedly convinced they couldn’t win with him. But they didn’t want to see him at dinner someone else either.

Third rate, low class move all the way.

    xxxxxxx

Find another team to be a fan of. If you could poll every GB fan, I guarantee the majority would want him to stay. Not everyone believes every word the media reports about him.

  37. The bench mark is now the Matthew Stafford and Russel Wilson trades. For Stafford Detroit got 2 first round picks, a 3rd, and Jarod Goff. For Wilson, the Seahawks got 2 first round picks and 2 second round picks, plus some decent players. Both of these guys are only a few years younger than Rodgers but not nearly as good. Due to the age I say drop the 2 second round picks, but nothing less than 2 first round picks for a chance to turn your franchise around. If Rodgers can play as long as Brady did, he has another 5 years of play.

  38. I’d look at it differently. The Packers are paying Rodgers a bunch of money and taking a HUGE cap hit if he doesn’t play for them this year, whether that’s through retirement or trade. There’s really not much incentive for them to do the Jets any favors. Rodgers is not what he was, but he’s still worth a higher draft pick than a few mid rounders. Now if they’re worried he’ll pull a Favre and come back, I guess that will tell you how much faith they have in Love. They’ll either play him or bench him, either way no way I’m doing the Jets any favors when I’m already on the hook for a huge cap hit.

  39. Hmm, now Rodgers for Wilson straight up is interesting. They got Favre when he was having maturity issues in ATL. He could sit for a year behind Love, and if he can’t beat out Love he wasn’t any good anyway.

  40. In the trade Rodgers probably wants an office with a thrown, a floor to ceiling mirror, and pearly-gates instead of a door.

  41. The bench mark is now the Matthew Stafford and Russel Wilson trades. For Stafford Detroit got 2 first round picks, a 3rd, and Jarod Goff.

And sadly, the Packers were most likely offered both deals… AND gave Rodgers another Brinks Truck.

  42. Green Bay should ask an outrageous amount for Ewwin Wawgers – first because of his own selfishness and over-inflated sense of self-worth. Second, he is the reason they have not won more games over the past few seasons despite begging to be the MVP. Third, he is holding the team hostage. Green Bay should force their hand and accept whatever happens, but they should not cave in on this clown. If he wants a divorce, then he should pay through the nose for it.

  43. Shouldn’t be a problem getting a minimum of a 2023 1st round pick for Rodgers. Any of the Jet faithful who expects the Jets to give less should be required to watch all second half of the 2023 season of Jets games in their entirety (commercials included) to “enjoy” the Quarterback play fail to the challenge. Now how much would you pay for a QB in draft picks? Chances are a 2023 1st round pick and a 2nd round conditional in 2024. Green Bay wants to move on to Jordan Love but they’re not going to give away AR to the Jets for peanuts.

  44. The Packers take a huge cap hit regardless of whether Rodgers is on the team or not.

But now they have to worry about Love, who is in the last yar of his rookie contract. They will have to pay him or cut him, leaving them with Rodgers, who may retire and no backup.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If his Packer career is anything like Starr, Favre, or Rodgers you can expect to see him in 2031.

  46. Funny, this trade will be negotiated by the same dope that drafted Love and another RB when the team was peaking and needed other assets, and then not so long ago negotiated a contract that gave Rodgers almost complete control over his contract situation. Combine that with a limited market of about one team interested in the goofball (but talented goofball) and they’d be lucky to get the Favre terms.

  47. Rodgers doesn’t have it anymore. If you watched him play last season, he declined. Same with the season before. Packers should take whatever the Jets offer.

  48. The Packers take a huge cap hit regardless of whether Rodgers is on the team or not.
    ===========

$31~mil if he plays for the Packers. That is middle of the market for QBs.

$40~mil if he is traded or retires. They can split that between 2023 and 2024 if they trade him after June 1.

They get out from under the bonus, which would be on their cap through the end of the contract in 2025.
