Jonathan Jones: It’s hard to say no to the Patriots

Jonathan Jones knows what he wants to happen, but the veteran cornerback doesn’t know what will happen when free agency opens.

Jones hopes to return to the Patriots, repeating a belief it will “work out.”

“That’s the desire — to be back here,” Jones said Wednesday after speaking with girls and mentors from Big Sister Boston at the Patriots Hall of Fame in honor of International Women’s Day, via Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.

“It’s what I know. It’s what I love. It’s New England. It’s hard to say no to New England.”

Jones, 29, spent his first seven seasons with the Patriots. He has never tested free agency, but the team chose not to use the franchise tag on any of their free agents.

“There’s not much anxiety. You just take it in stride,” Jones said. “It’s something new for me. I’ve never been through free agency. But I just have faith it’ll all work out in the end.”

Realistically, if Jones hits the market, he likely ends up elsewhere. He is one of the top cornerbacks on the free agent market and ranks 27th overall on PFT’s top 100.

But Jones indicated “interest on both sides” to get a deal done before free agency begins.

“I can’t say that I have any insight that it would [get done before free agency], but it’s possible we could,” Jones said. “That would be great. If not, that’s just part of it. . . . At some point, I’d like to have it past me. But it’s going to be what it’s going to be. I think I’m just taking it in stride and enjoying the journey.”

  1. How many people just 48 hours ago claimed these guys (FAs) couldn’t wait to get out of NE?

    Literally everything every troll says pertaining to NE is 100% a lie or a misrepresentation.

  2. My guess is he actually has an agent other than his mother who will get this worked out for him

  3. Sounds like a smart young man, good attitude. Don’t get worked up over things you can’t control.

    Who exactly said Jones can’t wait to get out of NE?

  5. I would like him to stay, but Belichick isn’t going the break the bank for a 29 year old cornerback.

    He didn’t break his philosophy for Revis or Gilmore or Samuel or Ty Law way back then.
    He didn’t break the bank last year for JC Jackson.

    I am sure some other team will overpay him and expect big production from the player once they leave, but all of those players signed bloated contracts with a new team and it looked like an albatross later, with Asante Samuel being the exception.

    If he wants to stay, he may have to accept a lesser contract. He is a good player and I hope he stays, but I am just a fan and this is just a hobby/entertainment for me. He is a grown man and I assume he has a family. He needs to do what he thinks is best for him and his family.

  6. Why stay? No TB12. Back to irrelevance like they were for 40 years prior.

    Put on the red unis and it’s just like old times.

    This is not the days of old with Brady behind center. Bill needs to retain talent. Didn’t break his philosophy for …? He sure did pay for Nelson Agholor , Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith.I’m 2021.

    Umm, your team is up the creek and still haven’t sniffed a bowl. Do you even live in reality?

    Coordinators gone and a whole load of free agents at once.

  9. I’d like to see him resign for 3 years…. But NOT as a boundary CB in the secondary UNLESS he’s filling in temporarily for an injured starter…. He excels a slot defender & in Zone coverage & that’s how he should be used primarily…. Not sure if Bill will keep him, but I sure hope he does as he’s a great teammate & locker room presence….just always seems to be around the ball, extending him & Peppers should be a no brainer for the Patriots!!!
    Exciting times ahead once again!!!
    Go Patriots!!

  10. Billshistorian you act as if Buffalo is all that.. once again they proved they can make the playoffs but thats about all.
    Miami gave them all they could handle in the playoffs with a 3rd string rookie 7th round QB and a roster with more players on IR then most. If Tua did not miss all those games Buffalo would of been a wild card and been one and done in the playoffs. And the window for that roster is closing quick. Even your top WR wants out, Defensive captain Poyer wants out also.

    Quite a few. It’s been pretty much the narrative for every Patriot player when they become a free agent.

  12. A former Patriot now podcaster is a friend of a friend of mine (no I won’t name them sorry).. I asked him about the Pats.. he told me “Bill Belichick is amazing, but that entire team is run like the military”.. not sure how many NFL players want to enlist in the military in 2023… just my 2 cents

    As of 2023, the Patriots lead the series over the Buffalo Bills 77–49–1.

    So what does that make the Bills, regardless of the color of their uni’s?

  14. I agree with casualnflfan – Belichick won’t break the bank for an older CB. Jonathan Jones is a solid “B-level” CB but will likely collect “A-level” money on the open market. Although Jones and the Patriots would like to see the fun continue, they are both realistic that they’re likely miles apart with the money. Patriots will see Jones sign a life-altering contract elsewhere and wish him the best of luck.

    Patriots have struggled drafting CBs lately (Joejuan Williams, Duke Dawson, Ras-I Dowling, Cyrus Jones, etc) but have had luck drafting UFDA CBs (Jones, JC Jackson, Malcolm Butler) and letting them sign elsewhere and pocketing the compensatory picks for more dubious picks.

    Jonathan Jones will be replaced with a couple of the 2022 picks – Marcus Jones and Jack Jones. Keeping up with the Joneses.

  15. The difference between New England now and New England in the first few years of Brady-Belichick is that players (with a few exceptions like Chad Eaton) would take pay cuts to stay with them. Even throughout the second dynasty which was arguably a more impressive run than the first, players were leaving in free agency. That loss of talent and continuity within the system — esp on defense — is an enormous impediment. Now Kansas City enjoys the perks of having players who don’t want to leave Mahomes Party for more money elsewhere.

  16. Pretty simple formula, and Jones knows it too. NE says go see what’s out there, he will take offers than NE will see the highest offer and either they will try to come somewhat close to that highest offer, or they let him go. BB has splurged on CBs in the last, but Jones isn’t going to be that one unfortunately. Really hope he stays

    The voices in his head.

  19. Belichick without Brady:
    79-88 Record;
    3 Winning Seasons;
    31-64 vs .500+ teams;
    0 Division Titles;
    2 Playoff Appearances;
    1-2 Playoff Record;
    0 Conference Championship Appearances

  20. Tom Brady’s 6x SB Champion Patriots are impossible to turn down. The Tom Brady-less 5x SB losing Patriots are not.

    +++++++++++++++++

    No one in early 2000s took pay cuts. Basically, BeliCHEAP gave Brady a Toyota Corolla and Brady was still able to win the race, then BeliCHEAP the garbage shamelessly took the credits.
