Kelvin Beachum: Kyler Murray needs to grow up a little bit

The Cardinals are heading in a new direction after hiring head coach Jonathan Gannon and General Manager Monti Ossenfort since the end of the 2022 season and one of the questions that the franchise will have to answer is if their reboot will extend to the quarterback spot at some point in the near future.

Decisions to draft and extend Kyler Murray were made by people no longer in the organization and Murray’s play ahead of last year’s torn ACL didn’t do much to convince the world that he’s a sure thing as the face of the franchise.

Tackle Kelvin Beachum is set for free agency after helping to protect Murray the last three seasons and he shared his thoughts about the quarterback during an appearance on Arizona Sports on Wednesday. Beachum said quarterbacks “have to be able to lead an entire organization, you’ve got to lead a team” and that Murray is still going through the process of becoming that kind of a leader.

“It’s not a completed process,” Beachum said. “I didn’t say he lacks leadership, I just think he needs to grow up a little bit. I think if he has the ability and willingness to grow up, he’s going to be just fine. They paid him for a reason, they paid him because of his talent. He has the ability to lead. When you’re in that position, we need you to lead more. You’re the face of the franchise . . . you have to lead in every single capacity.”

Murray’s progress may be impacted by the need to focus on recovering from his torn ACL during an offseason that will also require him to learn a new offense, but the Cardinals will need him to show it if they’re going to continue on the same track after switching gears elsewhere.

  1. Ruh roh thats not good teammates cant stand his act and throwing him under the bus

  2. Beachum played w/ Murray for a few yrs, so he should know his temperament pretty well. I would imagine the issue of Murray’s required playbook study time was something that came up justifiably, if what Beachum is inferring is true. As the highest paid player and starting QB, you probably should take actions to be the leader on and off the field.

  3. The Cardinals ownership stinks. Constant carousel of coaches and management. The only time they’ve been relevant in the last 30 years was when they had Arians and Warner.

  4. He’s a child, and he just got called out on it by one of his teammates. That’s never a good thing

  5. Now, hearing he needs to grow up from a teammate who was in the facility with him every day puts into context why they were asking him to study a minimum of four hours a week.

  6. Put the study clause back in his contract, take away the game console then hire a babysitter.

  7. After 4 years in the league, his record is 25-31-1. Year 2022 was his worst year at 3-8. So you could make a case of a short QB who is regressing, got paid a boatload of money, and is now recovering from a non contact ACL injury. Not looking good for the team, great for his bank account.

  8. I watched Kyler’s video listing his essentials. The X-Box, Siracha, his Rolex watch, his cleats, and is hair conditioner are his essentials.
    He sounds mature.

  9. He seems to have made a “business decision” about designed QB running plays. “Too risky, not gonna do it”. Without a significant percentage of running plays in his mix he is a: too small, too inaccurate, too selfish of a guy to be a good NFL QB. Not a good investment for AZ.

  10. This is fair, constructive criticism from someone with intimate knowledge. Casting pearls.

  11. lol, its not like this is anything new. folks ben saying this stuff for a while and yet the cardinals are obviously smarter than everybody else cuz they extended this fool, gave him a huge payday, and caved when they took out the whole study time condition. cards made their bed, enjoy

  12. It is Kelvin Beachum that needs to grow up and stop taking shots at his former QB in public.

  13. They are forever doomed with little Kyler. The contact will strap the franchise for years they didn’t have to sign him to the deal at all they had 2 MORE YEARS LEFT before they needed to make any moves. They caved to his whims when he deleted all his pictures from the Gram.

  14. You knew the Cards were fools when that bust Justin Pugh took them to the cleaners.

  15. As a Seahawks fan he’s doing great and nothing to change. They are overreacting lol.

  16. A little?!?!? He needs to grow up a TON. He is nothing but a whiny little headache for the organization. He calls out teammates every time he makes a mistake, which is a TON!

  17. Maybe that’s the real problem with running/passing QB’s, they learned this skill from youth and kind of mentally put the game on their shoulders but also didn’t rely on those around them to be part of it as in, I’ll do this myself.
They want to stand out as the guy who wins games for the team not the guy who tries and makes others better by leading them.

  18. Expecting someone to change when they just got generational money for doing what they do is a bit bananas. May happen but unlikely.

If that is what you got out of what he said, then you might need to grow up. Maybe you are in the same age group of Murray, seems like most in that range are childish and spoiled with no understanding of real life and responsibility.

  20. Not one teammate or coach or executive has anything good to say about this guy. He’s a problem.

  21. Fist the “study clause” in his contract, next the comments that P2 said about him being selfish. Now a player that is still technically his teammate says this? I smell a pattern. Has anyone come to his defense?

  22. Kyler’s always been a self-centered punk…and they keep rewarding him for it. Why would he change now?

When will we ever stop putting the entire team record on the QB? Yes, he is a big factor, but it’s as if his teammates and coaches don’t matter. And why is it that no one can improve? Elway and Manning would have been kicked out of the, if you went by their first 3 years in the league under this notion. I know one thing, AZ totally sucked before Kyler got there. And maybe his defunct coach was a problem.

  24. Looking at this year’s draft, does anyone really doubt that one or more of the top guys there will turn out to be just as good as Murray, and probably better?

It makes all the trouble and money the Cardinals have spent on Murray seem that much more ridiculous. The next Mahomes is *not* just around the corner in every draft, but the next Murray is there every year. Why go to those lengths for something so ultimately routine?

  25. The problem with players like Murray is that they are pampered and lauded because of ability and if they do not have a good support system or a strong coach as they grow you get guys like Murray. His natural ability was great in high school and college but the NFL is loaded with talent….his ego will be his downfall.
