Packers, Aaron Rodgers careen toward a divorce

Lost in the ongoing flirtation between the Jets and quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the inescapable reality that Rodgers and the Packers are done.

Two years ago, the 49ers called the Packers the day before the draft and inquired about trading for Rodgers. The Packers laughed and hung up the phone.

Now, the Packers have freely granted the Jets permission to speak to Rodgers. And speak they have, sending the team’s entire power structure to California in an effort to persuade Rodgers to bite the Big Apple (don’t mind the maggots).

Through it all, the Packers have kept their mouths shut. They didn’t even leak that they’d given Rodgers permission to speak to another team. It’s almost as if they’re four points ahead with three minutes left and they’re just trying to milk the clock and not blow it.

Blow it they would if Rodgers decides he’s not interested in the Jets, and that he wants to stay in Green Bay. It already feels too late for that, but Rodgers has yet make any of his decision(s) known for 2023, a year and a day after he announced he’d return to the Packers for 2022.

Although nothing official has been declared this year, the tea leaves are pointing to no more Wisconsin ayahuasca for Aaron Rodgers. Any other outcome would be a surprise at this point.

  1. What he should do is wait for Green Bay to make the first move. And if he doesn’t want to play for the team they trade him to then retire
    Pretty simple

  2. I’m still laughing at that previous article you (a Viking fan) wrote offering the Packers the advice that they should be open to accepting a mid-round pick for Rodgers. LMAO!

  3. He doesn’t have a no trade clause. Just make the compensation conditional and trade him. Why do they need to wait?

  4. The New York media will crush this diva to the point
    where he will cry like the baby he is.

  5. Now that a divorce appears to be imminent…the fight begins on which franchise gains custody of Aaron Rodgers. Looks like Green Bay may have to pay some child support payments to the Jets to get Rodgers off their hands.(and possible alimony)

  6. He isn’t the first or last HOF QB to play for a different team at the end of his career. As a long time GB fan I am tired of his antics and it’s time to move on. Thank you for the 2010 Championship and good luck in NY.

  7. The Packers have leaked everything and the result of that is that the Jets are bidding against themselves for Rodgers because presumably the Raiders and/or Titans don’t want to deal with it… I don’t doubt that Rodgers has worn out his time in Green Bay, but the Packers have been incredibly stupid in what has leaked out about him not trying last season, which seems absurd since he played with a broken thumb. Even if they felt that way, isn’t the smarter move to take the high road about it so teams don’t think you’re desperate to move him?

  8. It’s all about the draft capital at this point… Does GB get a 1st, a 2nd, this year, next year, multiple picks and how much of his salary will GB help with if any? Or maybe a complete restructure to guarantee two years out of #12. Whatever it is, his time in GB definitely appears to be over.

  9. Trading to your NFC rival and out of the conference are completely different things.

  10. I would hardly say it’s “careening”. From accounts out of Green Bay and media sources, the process has been very amicable. Rodger’s movie at this point is best for him and the team, both sides realize that. Really not that dramatic at all.

  11. Rodgers is in the drivers seat. It does not matter what direction this is pointing. He is guaranteed $60 million dollars. He has a no trade clause. Really you should point out like you have for other QBs that Rodgers should only do it if there are no draft picks involved otherwise it weakens his new team by losing picks. GB should be happy to get rid of his $60 million contract, if they really believe J Love is the real deal. This saga will be decided when Aaron makes his decision.

  12. My favorite part is most Packer fans just automatically assume Love will be another HOF 15 year Packer QB

    -Vikings fan

  13. All of the above is exactly why GB has ZERO leverage. Joe Douglas has proven to be pretty good negotiator. No reason to give up more than a mid-round pick.

  14. Not sure why NYJ would be interested in Rodgers. They have such a track record of QB drafting success…

  15. Rodgers track record may indicate he is just playin with the Jets. He really wants to just mess with the packers and then he will decide too go back to Green Bay. There are no expectations in GB, in NY he has to win, he has to carry them to the Superbowl, he can’t do that. He is afraid to play in NY, the media will pick on him, there is no media in GB. There’s no one critisize him in GB, NY will destroy his fagile ego. So he will go to GB and collect his $60 mil.
    I hope he goes to NY and fails and they crucify his ego. The NY Waffle House will have an Aaron special the flip flop waffler with cheese.

  16. Praise the Lord, we are finally rid of him in the NFC North.

  17. “”They didn’t even leak that they’d given Rodgers permission to speak to another team. It’s almost as if they’re four points ahead with three minutes left and they’re just trying to milk the clock and not blow it.””
    ============================================================================================

    Is it that or is it really that 2 teams can carry out a normal, business transaction professionally without all sorts of continual leaks to the media??

  18. No team to date has had 3 HOF QB’s in a row. Just wanted to leave that here real quick.

  19. It will be a sad day for many football writer when Aaron Rodgers finally retires, but it will a great one for fans of the sport who got tired of his nonsense years ago.

  20. A Divorce ??? HaHaHa,…. C’mon man,… Rodgers stated he wouldn’t stand in the way of Green Bay moving on to Jordan Love. That’s public info. It’s not a divorce. It’s just the end of his playing days in GB. A few years after he’s done playing he will have his name installed on the Lambeau Field Wall of Fame.

  21. I think it’s ok for Rodgers to leave, the Packers MUST move on and it looks like they’re ready to.. I’m ready.

  22. Good luck, A-A-Ron. I think NY is going to be a bit tougher crowd than those folks up in Cheeseville.

  23. Umm, blow it, would be to not get proper compensation with the leverage they have with Joe Douglas bent over a barrel right now.

    NY is importing a QB who can’t throw for 300 yards with Davante Adams and 2 good RBs in the backfield who makes 60 million. The cap hit will hurt and the dead money will be a disaster when he retires after a failed 2023.

    This isn’t done yet. If the Packers waited too long like the morons they have been by letting Rodgers control the narrative and get poor compensation, they will have totally blown it.

    All they did was waste 2 years of PAckers fans’ time.

  24. Rodgers is well on his way to the Brett Favre career arc. He has held off his drafted replacement for a few years, now he’s going to the jets. Next he will go to the Vikings and melt down in the playoffs a few times and then round it out with some welfare fraud.

  25. No one can predict Aaron Rogers, not his girlfriends, teammates etc nor perhaps himself. I think it is possible if he signs with the Jets that he will give it a true effort and finish his career there, perhaps 2 seasons, possibly 3 if his skills remain and he’s healthy. One possibility is that Aaron wants to put pressure on himself by going to NYC. Kind of a boot camp mentally. Do it die. Like joining the Navy Seals… failure is not an option.

  26. I figured Rodgers and the Pack would be stuck with each other for another year. I also figured SF would make a play for Rodgers this off-season with Purdy hurt and Lance an unproven commodity. That team is built to win now — must either be a cap issue, lack of draft capital or a mistaken belief in Lance. Maybe I should just stop figuring. . . .

  27. Is it crazy that Rodgers thought Favre was a selfish jerk at the end of his career and now Rodgers is following exactly in his footprints step by step…??

  28. Rodgers has always been a jerk towards others, full of himself and full of drama but now that his skills are in decline packers fans who used to worship him are now turning on him like they are known to do. Entertainment. Hoot!

  29. Packers should do everything in their power to keep Rodgers cause they’re looking at a decade of trash with Love there…

  30. I’ll believe it when I see the article posted on here that he signed with the Jets.Until then I’ll 🥱

  31. The NY media narrative does not work anymore because of social media and the internet have made it hard on players no matter where they are. On the positive side, he can in no way be worse than Wilson or Darnold and look what they spent in the draft to get those two.

  32. I’m a long time Packers fan for most of my life! I like Aaron and hope he returns! I’m also not against trading him for as much as someone would give us!his days are numbered! However, Jordan Love is not a future hall of famer! He’s Justin Fields at best! If we are to move on then they need to jettison Love as well! I won’t watch their games with Love as the heir apparent!

  33. Nope in the end he will be under center for the Pack. 60 million dollars is a lot of money. the Jets are in no way going to give him that why would he leave??

    **

    Packers aren’t getting a decade of AR either. At best, 2 years of a lot of money and no SB. The value in trading AR isn’t for 23 but for what it allows GB to do in 24 and 25.

  35. I still say trade him to the Raiders for Davante Adams and a couple of draft picks.

  36. It’ll be interesting to see if time is the healer of this “wound.” Brett Favre never seemed as “me” focused as Aaron Rodgers. The Packers so overpaid for Rodgers and he seemingly shows no appreciation for that.

  37. My favorite part is most Packer fans just automatically assume Love will be another HOF 15 year Packer QB

    -Vikings fan

    ——–
    my favorite part is Vikings, Bears, and Lions fans automatically assume Love will suck and the Packers will go into oblivion like the 1970s. Similar to what those same fans thought and laughed when Favre left and Rodgers took over. I cant wait to the first game when Love plays his firat ame in 2023 and looks pretty good and all those fans are looking at each other saying ‘Oh Crap, here we go again”

  38. Looks like Green Bay may have to pay some child support payments to the Jets to get Rodgers off their hands.
    ==========

    The option triggers week 1.

    Guess who won’t be picking up the check……….

  39. The Packers are fine. They can do anything but cut him. If he goes he goes. If he stays they can humiliate him on the bench as his stats stagnate. Maybe he comes around by trade deadline. Worst case they cut him designated post June 1st next year. If he retires he forfeits his guaranteed money.

  40. Bob McGinn called this one correctly
    ==========

    McGinn hasn’t been right about anything since he torpedoed McCarthy

  41. trollbait6,

    I will laugh loud and long when it is reported Belichick inquired as to the Packers asking price for Rodgers.

  42. Bob McGinn called this one correctly.
    ==================================
    Partially. McGinn added drama to what he said by saying the Packers were “disgusted” with Rodgers. Not the case at all. It’s the business side of NFL Football. McGinn just couldn’t resist sticking it to the Packers seeing he had his press credentials taken away for twisted reporting and openly criticizing Ted Thompson and McCarthy.

  43. They probably told Rodgers that if he came back he’d play behind Love. So find a new home or listen to the pundits bash him for staying to collect a check and carry a clipboard..

  44. Not sure what Packer fans are assuming JL is going to pick up where AR left off and continue the trend of high level QB play. Is it possible he might step in and be great in time? Maybe. The biggest thing right now is the Packers invested a 1st round pick in 2020 in Love who was seen as a project and he had the opportunity to sit three years behind a HoF QB. Now with that same QB hitting 40 and in the twilight of his career and the current squad not on the cusp of contention, it’s time to see what that heir apparent can do. The Packers brass has basically two years to evaluate Love and see if he can be the guy in GB.

    While Rodgers may be a bit of a diva with the media, the relationship between he and the current front office has hardly been the roller coaster of emotion Favre’s ’08 divorce from the Packers was. I see no problem testing the waters to see what kind of trade market there is for AR and at least one team is very much interested in him. Get what draft capital you can for a guy who may play one or two more years before retirement and put pieces around the guy you’ve been grooming for three years to give them the best chance they can to succeed when handed the reigns.

    Pretty simple

    —————

    I’m pretty sure Rodgers can force a trade to wherever he wants to go based on the team owing him 60 million dollars if he decides to come back.

  46. If Montana, Manning, Favre and Brady can retire on other teams, then it’s hardly an epic drama that Rodgers can. People who closely follow the Packers and watch all of Rodger’s interviews know he truly loves Green Bay; many of you think he’s this narcissistic fiend, but if he goes to the Jets, he knows he’s doing the Packers organization a solid, versus retiring or even coming back to GB for a year. He’s made his fortune, he’s won a Super Bowl, he’s got his MVPs and Gold Jacket secured, hes got nothing left to prove to anybody. As unimaginable as it may sound to you, he may be just doing this to aid an organization that he loves. And yes, be paid handsomely to do it. More power to him. He’s never hurt a soul.

    Most Packer fans, huh?
    Well then surely you can find multiple posts backing up your claim, right?
    How about even one?
    I’ll wait. 🤔

    No, we’re not under any delusions about Jordan Love.
    He was a talented player in college, unrefined, but considerable upside.
    Love was always a developmental NFL project.
    What was expected to be a two year situation turned into a three due to Aaron Rodgers’ MVP resurgence.
    Jordan Love, by all accounts, is ready.
    It’s time for him to finally play and show the Packers what they really have.
    Will he be a capable starter in this league, one the Packers can win with? I honestly don’t know.
    Nobody does.
    But I’m looking forward to finding out. 😉

    —————————————————————-
    Really? I suppose Rodgers should also rework his contract so he’s paid his $60 million across the next 60 years. Right? After all, it weakens the new team if they have to pay a premium in cap space. That money could be used to bring in additional talent. Right? Hahahaa

  49. This divorce should have happened last season before the $150 M later the Packers could have rebuilt their team with the draft capital they would have received in the trade. The Packers held on too long and now they will be giving Rodgers away for far less…

  50. Rodgers has shown he is bored with football and needs some motivation. The first time was when the Packers drafted Love. But that wore off. Now, he needs a new team to be motivated to do more than the bare minimum. That too will last maybe two years.

  51. It should be mentioned that every Packers player that has been interviewed wants Rodgers to stay. If he does go back to Green Bay, the players who have to win their games for them will be happier. They speak well of Jordan Love, but every time I hear that it sounds forced.

  52. It aint over yet. Diva boy is very un predictable or should we say, mysterious?
    Once he leaves his bat cave who knows whats in store for him. For certain, the work the Raiders aint interested was obviously very true. They want Garrapolo or a draft pick

  53. I honestly did not think that Love looked too bad when he was playing. I think they will be OK with him as long as the defense doesn’t let them down.

    Hard to replace a Rodgers, but I suspect Love will be more then capable of being a solid starting QB from what I have seen so far.

  54. There’s no way GB would have traded Rodgers to SF. Niners would have likely won at least one Super Bowl and GB would have an egg on their face.

  55. Mr Florio… I can assure you the Stones reference regarding “Shattered” lyrics went over most heads. I’d be suprised if you were even alive when “Some Girls” was released in 1978. Shadoobie…

    ——-

    You must be talking to the wrong Packer fans or maybe on the wrong side of state lines. I’m sure no Packer fan in WI is delusional enough to think Love is HOF. He showed flashes but nothing to convince me he can carry the team to winning seasons. Packers would need a stacked team to support him.

  58. Rodgers does not have a no trade. It was thought there would be no takers on 60mil but GB found their one dumb team. He isn’t going to retire because of Brady. This is all an act. He’s going to be a Jet. I hope GB moves him for a 7th. Moving the contract is already a victory.

  59. GB trades Rodgers to the Jet for a 3rd and a 4th round pick in 2027. GB is so happy!

  60. Packers fans beware: Going from Rodgers to Love isn’t even in the same galaxy as going from Favre to Rodgers. Love remains an unknown quantity, and drafting him where they did was a reach. This could easily blow up in their faces.

  61. With a 60 million salary, I don’t know how GB can ask for anything from another team. They should be offering a pick or cash to go along with the deal.

  62. GB wants to cash out with picks on AR12 just like BAL does with LJ8. In both cases the teams waited too long, they could’ve won the lottery 1 or 2 years ago but didn’t have the foresight.

  63. Let’s assume that he ends up in NY. Possible scenarios.
    What would the AFC East look like next season, at least? The Bills seeming advantage with the weather will be tenuous, Rodgers chilled it out in Green Bay for a long time.

  64. The Packers filed for divorce three years ago when they traded up in the first round to draft another QB. You know you’re having marital problems when you’re only a player or two away from a super bowl championship, and instead of drafting those missing pieces, you take a QB instead, even though Rodgers was still in his prime and went on to win two more MVP’s. Since they sabotaged their chances to win more super bowls, why didn’t they trade Rodgers when they could have easily gotten three first round picks for him? To be messing around with a first ballot HOF QB when you’re in a QB league, those decisions are obviously coming from the very top of the organization.

  65. With a 60 million salary, I don’t know how GB can ask for anything from another team. They should be offering a pick or cash to go along with the deal.
    ==========

    Rodgers 2023 cap number if traded is $15.79mil.

    The Packer would take a $40.3mil cap hit.

    They’re not eating any of the contract. They can barely absorb the cap hit.

  66. Packers fans beware: Going from Rodgers to Love isn’t even in the same galaxy as going from Favre to Rodgers.
    ===========

    While I don’t disagree, I don’t think people remember how Rodgers was viewed before the Favre trade.

    Outside of a half of football against the Cowboys, he hadn’t showed any one of us anything.

  67. Green Bay has Rodgers under contract, with no no-trade clause.
    ===========

    Rodgers does NOT have a no trade clause.

  68. It should be mentioned that every Packers player that has been interviewed wants Rodgers to stay.

    That doesn’t fit the haters narrative…

  69. Law of averages, before the incredible run of QB play from 1992-2022, there were the majikowskis, the Lynn dickies, … two hall of fame QBs in a row, Packers, your about to relive the 80s.

    **
    This is 100 percent the correct assumption. Rodgers has gone as far as he can go with Packers at this point. Regardless what Jordan Love becomes, Packers will at least find out and be able to move forward from there.

  71. I have to laugh at all the misinformed people who make comments on this! Like bench Rodgers And force him to retire? Get a clue he’s guaranteed 60 million. They won’t pay him that to ride the bench! This is all about Rodgers getting some of his guys like Cobb back! If the Packers bend a little bit he will be back!If they don’t agree then he will be traded! It’s up to Aaron what he does, not the Packers!

    You can hope the Packers fail with Love, you can wish the Packers fail with Love, and you can pray the Packers will fail with Love, but you cannot know the Packers will fail with Love. Its hard to view him as credible at this point.

You can say he won’t be. Nobody knows. Nobody knew about Starr, Favre, or Rodgers either. Speculate and predict all you want……but nobody knows.

    I do think Packers fans have been pretty spoiled since Favre won the starting job. The Magic Man era was pretty terrible along with most of the years all the way back to 1968. Any packer fan who can remember even the tail end of those years in 1990 and 1991 is at least 40. It’s been a really great run at the QB spot for 31 years after 20+ years of mediocrity. The odds of finding another HOF QB are really low. Not impossible, but low. The majority of the Packers fans who don’t remember how bad they were are likely going to get a taste now for a while.

  83. The Packers can’t fire Rodgers.

    I don’t see a welcome party for Rodgers if he doesn’t agree to a trade. More like a lot of cussing and swearing about having him hold a clipboard this season.

    The team wants to let Love try and show what he can do and would rather not pay his backup $60,000,000 this season to be a backup.
