Stefon Diggs on Bills’ struggles: “It doesn’t make sense”

When we last saw Bills receiver Stefon Diggs on (or technically near) a football field, he was gesticulating in the direction of quarterback Josh Allen during a home playoff loss to the Bengals. Since then, Diggs has had a couple of cryptic tweets that have created questions as to whether he’s ready to move on from Buffalo, the same way he moved on from Minnesota.

Appearing on The Shop, Diggs said nothing about leaving his current team. He said plenty about his efforts to understand his current team’s inability to fulfill its full potential.

It doesn’t make sense,” Diggs said, via Sal Capaccio of WGR 550. “I’ll rack my brain with this shit at this point. . . . I think it’s more execution than anything. Shit is small little pieces on why it’s not going right . . . We’ve got the players. We’ve got the plays. Why shit ain’t coming together? That’s where you draw some of those questions. I never want to question who I am, I never want to question how I am. I’m giving this shit everything I’ve got. I’m dying on the hill for that.”

Some would disagree that they truly have enough of the right players to make a difference. Regardless, something is missing. After getting to the AFC Championship in 2020, the Bills have lost in the divisional round in two straight seasons.

Last year, the external expectations were unreasonably high. This year, the external expectations should be lower — but the internal pressure could be mounting. If the problem is the players, the solution could be changes in the front office. And if the problem isn’t the players, there could be a shakeup in the coaching staff.

The recent exit of defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier suggests that the shakeup possibly has already begun. Even if he truly decided to leave on his own, maybe Frazier was sensing that the 2023 season will have everyone in the organization feeling the heat like never before.

  1. Honestly what happened is they drank the Kool aid and bought in to everyone saying they were going to the SB. With that brings lackadaisical effort and players taking plays off, taking a few practices lightly, playing at 80 percent instead of 100 percent. Then you have selfish players that do not play as a team and they freelance and it hurts the scheme being run. Buffalo window has closed and they will be fighting to make the playoffs within a season or 2. It’s just how the game goes. Love Josh Allen but he tries to do too much at times and it hurts the team effort.
They barely got by Miami in the playoffs with a 3rd string 7th round QB rookie. Had Tua been playing Buffalo would of been one and done. Diggs wants out of Buffalo too.

  2. Looks like a solid finger point to the coaching staff. Execution? Ouch.

  3. Championship teams find the mental fortitude and perseverance to achieve their highest of expectations no matter how much heat is on them. You be the best you for the team not for yourself. That’s what Brian Daboll did for those offensive players. He made them focus on the right aspects.

  4. That’s not all he said. Dude still takes shots at the Vikings but they clearly were right to get rid of him because he’s a divisive guy that can rip apart your lockerroom

  5. True character is shown during times of stress. Digs is just showing that his true character is not one of a good teammate.

  6. The QB is too reckless and inaccurate. The hype from almost beating Mahomes went to his head.

  7. Vikings clearly live rent free in Digg’s head. Can’t stop bringing that up and now he’s whining about Buffalo… just stop being a diva and focus on winning and not throwing tantrums when your losing. Bills are good and will remain so under McDermott. Allen needs to lesson up on his mistakes for sure but that defense has gotta be more clutch in crunch time. Get those 2 things corrected and the Chiefs and Bengals will have some serious competition next season from these Bills with or without Mr. Diggs.

  8. The Bills are knocking on the door every year. They’re one of the top 4 or 5 teams. Nobody is a lock. It could be a different champion each year. Terrell Owens taught me about how a talented player can be a big negative. It’s hard to win with guys like that.

  9. A healthy Allen elbow, and an improved O line will definitely help.
Lots of crazy things happened to them this past year.

They had just beaten the Tua-led Dolphins the month before.

    +++++
just as they were clearly wrong to extend him before they got rid of him.

  12. They’re treating the running game like it’s a barely ancillary part of football. They need to shore up the O-line and get a power back. This is so obvious that I feel ridiculous even typing this out.

  13. It’s actually a very simple reason why and it’s the same reason the Pats offense took a step back in ’22, you don’t lose a top OC like Daboll and not take a step or two backwards for at least a year or two, first off you just lost one of the best OCs in the NFL, easily in the top 3 IMHO and those aren’t easily replaced. Second the entire offense has to learn a totally new offensive scheme and get the timing and everything else down to a tee and that usually doesn’t happen in one off-season or even the first 1/2 of the regular season. I said when the Bills lost Daboll that they’d take a step or two back until the new OC instituted his offense and it was up and running 100% and they’d only get back to where they were if the new OC was as close to as good as Daboll was and I don’t think he is.

Now the Bills have a new and maybe even bigger problem and that is Allen is due a $23.4mil pay raise and they’re already $21.95mil over the cap for the ’23 season, that means the Bills are going to have to shed some talent and getting rid of league minimum players won’t do it they’re going to have to let a couple/few really good players go. This is where signing those huge dollar contracts for a QB comes back to bite you in the a&&! OH and another problem the Bills have is they don’t have a running game, Allen isn’t a running game and Singletary hasn’t come close to being a dependable RB, he hasn’t had anywhere close to a 1000yd season, he missed converting a lot of 3rd or 4th and shorts and he only has 16 TDs over his entire 4yr career and 20 combined TDs, that’s ONLY 4 rushing TDs and 1 receiving TD per season, that’s SAD, EXTREMELY SAD!

You literally have no idea what you are talking about. Considering the massive amount of injuries and adversity the Bills dealt with last season, getting to the second round of the playoffs was more than most teams in their position would have achieved. Put that level of injuries and adversity on the Chiefs or Bengals and see how far those teams would have gone. But haters gonna hate.

  15. Sean McDermott is the problem. He’s losing the locker room. Diggs knows it, everybody knows it. The owner GM should have kept Leslie Frazier and dumped Sean who consistently ignores the OLand WR position.

  16. Its not complicated, its really not about scheme so much, or play calling, it comes down to a very simple group of problems this team has: bad in game coaching and play calling from OC and DC and HC (most especially this year), o-line and d-line that cannot dominate when needed. and finally, lack of skill position talent and injuries (last year they were a mash unit)

Ive said it many times, this team is looking like a WC team this next year..mark the tape.

    Buffalo was warned.

    ———

The bills are way better than the pats. Not even close. Heck, my Steelers were better. LOL.

  18. The Bills were the best team in the league the first month or 2 of last season – then the wheels came off. I don’t care if it sounds like an excuse, but I can’t remember a Buffalo team that had as much adversity.

Allen played w/ a hurt elbow the last part of the season; Poyer and Phillips were both playing Hurt; they lost Miller & Hyde; they had 2 massive blizzards, one of which they had to relocate a game for; a teammate of theirs died right in front of them on the field.

Part of winning a championship is overcoming adversity, but it hit a tipping point. To win a SB, you need a great team – but most teams need a little luck to win it all in the end. The Bills didn’t have that in ’23. Definitely looking forward to the upcoming season and having another chance.

  19. Meant to say “almost died” and the year should be ’22. I shouldn’t post pre-coffee.

  20. Diggs just isn’t a mature guy — likeable guy and a great player, but weird and immature. I knew the Bills weren’t going to go anywhere last season after my favorite mediocre Vikings team beat them in that very entertaining game. It seems like the Bills are starting the downslide of their contention window.

  21. They just weren’t as good as advertised…

OL is average every year, they signed the same guys and an old guard last offseason
WR outside of Diggs don’t scare anyone. The guy who scored 4 tds in the playoffs everyone was projecting him as a superstar but he didn’t progress after that one game. Beasley left other guys just picked up his production.
Running game is an after thought. They don’t care about it. You could Barry Sanders back there and they wouldn’t use him.
DL is average. Lots of high picks but no real production . Miller helped but now he’s old and hurt
Secondary got old fast. And white was a shell of himself when he came back
Beane is good but maybe not that good. Lots of so so signings and draft picks
Daboll was the biggest loss, not just play calling but also leadership

Now they have the cap to contend with

I will end this by saying that I know the Bills are better than NE, that doesn’t make the above “not true”

  22. Would it make sense if I told you that you and your team were/are vastly over rated?
