Saints offer Jameis Winston a “restructured” (i.e., reduced) deal, with an ultimatum

Remember the “breaking news” that Jameis Winston “likely” will be released by the Saints, now that they have signed Derek Carr? Jameis may not be released, after all.

Via Dianna Russini of ESPN.com, the Saints have offered Winston a “restructured” contract. He has until Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to accept it, or he’ll be released.

In most cases, “restructured” means “you get most of your pay now, as a signing bonus.” In this case, it means “you take less or you take a hike.”

Winston is due to make $12.8 million this year. The Week One starter in 2022, he appeared in only three games.

The challenge now for Winston’s agent will be to gauge the market for his services. Will someone else offer as much or more than whatever the Saints are offering?

Yes, it’s tampering for teams to answer that question. Yes, it happens all the time.

If Winston doesn’t accept the reduced offer in New Orleans, he possibly could land in Denver, reunited with Sean Payton.

Whatever the outcome, the Saints want to keep Winston at their price. If he doesn’t like that price (especially if someone else will pay a higher price), he’ll be a free agent by Wednesday.

  1. Bring him back to Tampa purely for the entertainment value, gonna be long year for Tampa, be nice to be entertained.

  2. Jameis has earned $67,980,894 in his career. He does not have to and should not take a low ball offer from the Saints.

  3. None of that is surprising. Does anybody here care about “tampering”? It’s just business.

  4. So I guess it’s ok for teams to tamper with a no name like Winston without their being a league investigation, and fines along with draft picks being stripped, but God forbid this happen with someone like Tom Brady right?

  5. No chance for him to start and you know the saints don’t have money to pay a premium backup salary. Looks like he will be moving on.

  6. Winston has demonstrated that he can learn from, and perform well under Payton. He had the best TD to INT ratio of his career, and went 10-3 as a starter under Payton. Plus he can be a lesson to the Broncos: “if I (of all people) can learn from him , you can too. If he’s smart he’ll have his agent call Payton to see what can be worked out before Wednesday

  7. If Winston is ready to be a career backup, there are worse places do it than New Orleans. If he wants to compete for a starting job, it will have to be somewhere else.

  8. I’m pretty sure Washington would grab him at that price. Despite my personal dislike of the off-the-field person he is and the interceptions, he’d probably be a perfect fit here.

  9. See Lamar, Winston has an agent that can make those calls to teams and get you a good deal instead of having your mom help you. You read that right, his mom is advising on his contract negotiations..

  10. While the Broncos and the Saints now both have QBs that suck at least Russell WAS a winning QB which Carr has never been.

That said the shine is off Wilson while Carr is the shiny new toy in the box so there is no chance his backup gets on the field no matter how badly he plays. Wilson’s might.

If I were Winston I’d say ‘no thank you, release me’ (especially if Payton is whispering come to Denver). He could sign a 1-2 year ‘show me’ deal and maybe restart his career (ala Geno Smith). And if not he makes comfortable money as a backup until he decides to move on to something else.

  11. Does anyone realize that Dennis Allen is a 25% win percentage coach at this point? Andy Dalton actually pplayed better than Carr last year, but they just paid him $40 million a year as the solution to the QB room, a 40% winning starting QB himself. Run away if you can Winston and find a better coaching staff to attach yourself to.

  12. Starting opportunities look fairly slim. Panthers, Bucs, Colts, Raiders, WFT, with none of them being a clear shot. Raiders seem to be the best option of that bunch.

So it may be which team he wants to be a backup for. Carr is one of the most durable QBs in the league so it would be rolling the dice on him being terrible (unlikely). He’s probably not going to get any playing time behind Wilson either, but I’d say just being sought by Payton and being there a while would improve his image more than stalling out in NO.

  13. I don’t think any other team will be looking to give him a real shot at being the starter. If it was me, it would come down to how much I liked being in New Orleans. If I loved the area, had friends there, and my kids were in school, I’d take what the Saints offer. If I was only there because of the job, then I would look elsewhere.

He doesn’t “have to” accept anything from anyone. But it may be that he will have to if he wants to be employed by someone. I don’t see a single team that would sign him as a starter. I think he’s good enough to get another shot but it will be through the path of a backup.

  15. I would rather have Winston than Dak, mostly at that reduced price. Too bad Dallas needs to keep Dak at least one more year. If they extend Dak – terrible move

  16. Losing a starting QB job to Andy Dalton is a wake up call. Either commit to perfecting your game or assume your place on the Baker Mayfield QB tour bus. Winston has enough talent to start in a few markets if he goes back to school and grows up.

  17. His best option: Move on and try to remain a starter for some team. There is always back up QB money available……if necessary.

  18. Please leave, you did nothing in NOLA besides throw picks and second guessing every throw. He’s not good, he’s a backup at best but the younger QBs in college will torch him plain as day.

Why would he care about being employed when he has 67+ million dollars? He doesn’t need a job, doesn’t need the Saints, doesn’t need any other team. If he plays again it will be out of pure love of the game, not because he needs employment.

Again, you are assuming that Winston needs to play. He doesn’t. He certainly doesn’t have to humble himself to Payton or anyone else just to be on a roster. He is a number one overall pick, his image is just fine.

  21. Ives seen him all his years in TB he has some talent but I wanted Marriota instead now both of them look to be out of the league soon.

  22. Why should Jameis even want to go back to Tampa Bay? So that Brucie boy can ridicule him like before. If I were Jameis, I’d take my chances in the CFL.

  23. At this point of his career, we know what he is. And isn’t. This isn’t like the case with Geno Smith who never had the kind of chances that Winston had to prove himself because many, like myself, just dismissed him as another bust rather prematurely. The book on Winston, good and bad, is pretty clear. Borderline starter, bridge to the franchise QB that he himself clearly isn’t.

  24. Jameis needs to start thinking of his post football life. And no I’m not talking about broadcasting, I’m talking about Foot Locker. Clearly he could sell more sneakers and become Employee of The Month.
