Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne will be staying in Washington.

Payne and the Commanders have agreed to a four-year contract worth $90 million, with $60 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports.

Payne was slated to become a free agent on Wednesday, but the Commanders placed the franchise tag on him, so he wasn’t going anywhere. Still, this is a very early signing that makes clear both sides were motivated to get something done.

The 25-year-old Payne arrived in Washington with the 13th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He played out his five-year rookie contract and was chosen to the Pro Bowl in 2022, and now he’s received a big raise to start 2023.

  1. I was hoping the Bears would have a shot at him but I think Washington did the smart thing here. Good for Daron!

  2. Now trade Payne, your #1 this year and next and a 2 from this yr and a 3 next for the #3 overall pick

  3. Enjoy playing the next four years for a losing team?…..Dude did you even watch the Commanders play?.….The roster is loaded and ready to do some damage! Ask Philly and Dallas!!!

  4. Micah Parsons of the Cowboys came right out and admitted he wanted Payne in Dallas to fix their D-line issues. He’s coveted by other players around the league because he’s that good! Great for my home team to finally make the right move and not let players milk franchise tag $ and walk away for virtually no compensation!

  5. 2nd highest paid DT behind Aaron Donald. Too much money. Albert Haynesworth 2.0.

  6. The roster is loaded and ready to do some damage!

No QB, poor OL and Dan Snyder is your problem.

  7. Should’ve got out while you had the chance But with this choice it’s obvious you’re just in it for the money

  8. You win with the big guys up front. DC needs to rebuild the o-line next. Also, I wouldn’t be shocked if they traded Chase Young.

  9. Well worth it… Alabama boys play hard…It’s Young I wonder about….not durable

    ****

Yet with several qbs, none of them spectacular, they managed to win exactly the same amount the packers won. Put Aaron Rodgers on the commanders, and they will be a 10 win team.

And still went 8-8-1. Imagine if they draft an offensive lineman in the 1st round as many mock drafts have projected and snag even a mediocre quarterback in free agency. Yeah, Dan Snyder is the problem.

Rodgers played with a broken thumb, injured OL, and green receivers. But Even Rodgers couldn’t raise the Commanders to 10 wins.

  13. Anyone else get tired of these guys having career years just prior to free agency? Makes you wanna say “we’re giving you a ton, how about you give us 100%”—Idk, it’s just so predictable.

  14. The Washington D has some serious talent. Unfortunately the QB issues will prevent them from getting their proper due.

  15. Washington’s DLine is insane — Daron, Allen, Sweat, and Young, if healthy, can wreak havoc. Commanders gonna kick as$ next year.

Dan Snyder has entered the chat room

  17. I wonder how the new coach/GM will use him next year…

All joking aside, the recently released survey by the NFLPA had the commies ranked last or very close to last when it came to team facilities, training staff, nutrition, etc. All things that could lead to increased injury risk. Not sure why you’d want to potentially risk your football career for the Dan Snyder Football Team

You need to learn that this is professional football. The guys playing are professionals. They play for money. Do you really think that someone who just received $60 million guaranteed cares primarily about wins and losses?
