Rams will trade Jalen Ramsey to Dolphins for Hunter Long and a third-round pick

Jalen Ramsey is heading to Miami.

The Rams and Dolphins have agreed to a trade that will send Ramsey to Miami and send Hunter Long and the Dolphins’ 2023 third-round pick (No. 77 overall) to Los Angeles, according to multiple reports.

The trade cannot become official until the new league year begins on Wednesday, but both teams have agreed to do it.

Ramsey is still playing at a high level, but his massive salary cap hit and the Rams’ precarious cap situation made the Rams eager to trade him. Ramsey has a $17 million base salary for 2023. The trade will save the Rams $5.6 million in cap space this year.

Long is a 2021 third-round pick who has barely played in his first two NFL seasons.

For the Dolphins, it’s a big move that shows they’re serious about being contenders this season. For the Rams, it’s a big reminder that the team they’re fielding in 2023 will look very different from their Super Bowl-winning roster of 2021.

  1. Once again the Dolphins GM makes a terrible decision based on utter desperation.

  2. I’m surprised the Giants weren’t all over this offering Holmes or Robinson and a day 2 pick.

  3. Now let’s go sign OT Mike McGlinchey to shore up the right side of the offensive line.

  4. Gesicki is gone and Ling was supposed to be his replacement. I lol forward to the plan they have for a new TE.

Ramsey opposite Howard will be better than Byron Jones opposite Howard. Especially in Vic Fangio’s defense.

  5. Very interesting move by the dolphins especially off they bring in TB12. Meanwhile, the selloff/fire sale begins in LA. Aaron Donald will be traded by June 1st, if not June 2nd.

  6. After seeing the Dolphins secondary get burned a lot…every game….this will definitely help

  7. Long wasn’t a fit with this offense, he suffered from the same things Gesicki did. Good route runner and hands but not adept in the blocking scheme. Surprised it was only for a 3rd.

  8. He didn’t want to go anywhere else.

    Major coup for Miami.

CB and RT were major needs, along with TE.

They can probably make major strides at all 3 spots.

  9. Dolphins turned Davante Parker, Hunter Long and a 5th into Jalen Ramsey. They now have the #1 WR and CB duos.

  10. An All-Pro for a 3rd Round. Hunter Long was a scrub. He is slow and can’t run block. The Fins moved a lot of contract around and have Dalton Shultz money now.

  11. Secondary’s don’t typically get burned, it’s weak defensive lines that cause corners/safeties to have to cover a longer time, nearly impossible with today’s athletic WR’s. Give a secondary…ANY secondary a high pressure D-line and they’ll be top 10 in the league.

  12. The Dolphins are Tua’s team. The only Brady scenario I can see is if Tua gets hurt in October or November.

  13. Good move and right time, getting it done before free agency kicks off will help Miami in bidding wars for other players they may want. Free agents can see the pieces the Dolphins have and know they’ve got a shot to compete for Super Bowl. Back-up QB is huge for Miami now!

  14. Will Ramsey be able to cover Diggs better in a dolphin uniform than a rams uniform?

    I suspect not.

More like licking his wounds! 🙂

  16. Dolphins got a great player and team mate in Ramsey. If he was allowed to play offense he would never come off the field. Not only was he a shut down corner but he’s a beast in run support unlike many cover CB’s and played on all special teams for the Rams in a lost season. As a Rams fan, I wish we got a bit more in return but happy for Ramsey that he got traded to the destination of his choice.

  17. QBs who threw at J Ramsey in 2022 collectively rated as an MVP candidate. He’s a name only player.

QBs in the AFC East to feast in 2023.

  18. Dolphins need some trade and free agent help after losing their 1rst round pick due to cheating. I can’t believe Tua’s and the Dolphins doctors are advising Tua to play.

  19. The defensive front is unable to put any pressure on opposing QBs. They could have all Deion Sanders clones in the secondary and they will still get torched!

The pats list picks due to cheating also. Let me guess everyone cheats but the pats right? No one else? That’s why you’re the worst fan base ever. And even worse online internet doctors.

  22. If the phins defense can overachieve with Vic calling the shots and the phins sign a Veteran right tackle and a security blanket tight end. The phins could possibly sniff a Super Bowl.

  23. Ramsey is happy to get away from the Niners that burned him every game. Ramsey couldn’t stop Deebo or McCaffrey. Good luck to Dolphins fans. The Rams got the better end of that deal.

  24. Hunter Long will go down among the all-time Miami Dolphins bums…

He has 1 career catch over 2 seasons (16 games).

He dropped his lone target in the Wild Card Round vs. Buffalo. Would have been a first down…

    Good Luck & Good Riddance.

    Go Dolphins.

  25. Gotta love how that arrogant, pompous idiot Les Snead, suddenly covets a draft pick. Hilarious. That ridiculous quote will follow him forever. Absolute garbage GM, and an embarrassment to GMs who actually value draft picks and building a team, based on their own scouting and talent evaluation.

He’s making $17 mil this season and is looking for a new contract. Where is that money coming from? Especially when they have to resign dexter Lawrence.

  27. Ramsey is one of the top DBs in the NFL. He’s made the Pro Bowl 6 out of the 7 years he’s been playing. He’s been great with the Rams. A team leader on and off the field. Rams fans are going to miss him. This will hurt our defense a lot.

The people on here criticizing him apparently don’t watch football. He’s been great with the Rams. The only time he’s been upset about anything was last year, when the defense was playing well enough to win games, but the banged up offense couldn’t put any points on the board. His complaint about that is valid.

Miami fans will see a greatly improved secondary.

Will he really? His 2023 salary is fully guaranteed on March 17 for 2023. I suppose they can just absorb that hit this season and next seasons even if he’s traded. Right?

That’s the point and the story on Jalen Ramsey. When things are going well he’s a great team mate but as soon as things don’t go his teams way he’s a problem and wants out. Always points the finger at others instead of himself.

  30. Doesn’t matter. They don’t have a QB. We all know Tua will get hurt by Halloween.

  31. Went from 1 of the best to journeyman real fast See what your mouf gets you in the NFL😬

  32. The Dolphins have 5.6 mil of effective cap space available right now. Why do they even talk about the cap? It’s largely irrelevant. Ramsey’s cap hits will be 17, 18.5, and 19.5 over the next three years. The cap will go up in future years but so do the cap hits on many contracts. They are talking about bringing in a 30 million dollar QB now. How? This is just another ridiculous aspect of the NFL. It’s becoming the NBA now with teams collecting stars for a year or two and then tanking for draft picks. Everyone gets to take their turn, right? Is that it? I get that the can is being kicked down the road, but it is so vague, it makes no sense to even talk about it.

  33. The pats list picks due to cheating also. Let me guess everyone cheats but the pats right?

When did I ever say the Pats didn’t cheat? I just remember the delight of other team’s fans(that lost to the Pats) pointing it out. Forget the ‘whataboutism’. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, there’s outrage?

As far as Tua and concussions go, the stats for people who have received multiple concussions are indisputable. To sacrifice one’s later life for winning and money(he’s already made plenty) is his choice. Hopefully, he gets lucky. I wouldn’t do it.

  34. Tua is a great quarterback but I kinda feel like Lamar Jackson makes Miami a SB favorite over KC or Bufallo

Key word in the above statement is WAS, because he is no longer a shutdown corner. He gets way too often to be called a shutdown corner.

  36. Ramsey got burned a lot last year. The draft is super deep at DB too. This is the Phins big move since they lost their top pick.

  37. A third round pick and a guy who’s barely played is nothing for Ramsey if he can still play. The league must be down on him if that’s the best offer they could get. Jamal freaking Adams brought 2(!) first round picks, seems odd.

  38. I am a Rams fan. This was realistically as good as the Rams could have hoped for, honestly. The Rams will be a six to eight win team. Then come 2024 .. massive amounts of cap room. Get your yuks on while you can, haters.. Snead and McVay are coming again. Tick, tick, tick.

It’s a fair point. I’m guessing they felt the same. For discussion they could have move on from Adoree or Leonard in a year. I think Miami got an excellent deal, that’s the point.

  40. laughable that rams traded two 1st rounders for him, overpaid him, and watched him get torched by Deebo (among the many, many WR’s to do it) 2-3 times a year before finally pulling the plug

That’s possible. But the 49ers are in their division. The 49ers aren’t going anywhere, it seems. In fact, the 49ers may improve with clarity at the QB position after 2023. Trading and signing FAs has been the Rams recipe for success…. but the bill eventually comes do. They can’t turn around and F things repeatedly–that was a one time use. They have to do the total opposite now. They must shed salary, find FA bargains, and develop picks.

  42. Dolphins fans will be happy when the realize that Ramsey works very hard off the field and is ultra-prepared each week. Say what you want about the guy, he plays with fire in his belly.

Bla bla bla .. 49ers no SB wins since 1994 … come again when they win another one, maybe .. bye lol

  46. Rams traded 2 #1’s to get him and the Fins gave a #3 and a TE who caught 1 pass in 2 years. Fins get the W

  47. Did someone really say Mac Jones is licking his chops? You can’t be serious, are you really being serious? Mac Jones should concentrate on scoring over 17 points/game before he can get excited about one of the better corners entering that division

  48. The dolphins are just flailing now. Overpaid and lost five picks for tyreek last year and now get a huge contract for an overrated DB. they better win the SB this year because they dont have a future beyond that.

    —————————————————————

Yea difference is Rams got him in his prime. Their is this phenomenon called time and years have passed since that trade took place, Miami is getting a 29YR old version of Ramsey who’s on the decline. Go look how often Ramsey was burned last year, AJ Green who was beyond washed and didn’t belong in the NFL anymore beat him for a TD last season. Oh and Ramsey is demanding another big time pay day. It’s not that great of a deal which is why no one offered anything more for Ramsey and he didn’t have much of a market because no one wants to give up picks n pay a premium for a declining corner pushing 30 on the back end of his career.

  56. Dolphins taking that f-them picks and “what salary cap?” Approach to this. I don’t like Ramsey much, but he’s an upgrade. I don’t like the approach much, but the haters will never point out that it got the rams 2 sb appearances and 1 win so it worked.

  57. >>When did I ever say the Pats didn’t cheat? I just remember the delight of other team’s fans(that lost to the Pats) pointing it out

I’m not sure what this is in regards to but: some people are OK with cheating, some are not. It really depends on what kind of person you are

    good luck out there

  58. Damn. A third rounder for Ramsey? As a Pats fan knowing we’ll need to win 17-13 to win at all unless O’Brien works miracles and/or they sign/draft some skill position wizards, I would have done that in a heartbeat.

If two SB’s and one SB win is arrogant and pompous I’ll take that GM all day, every day. How’s your team doing?

  60. Players wanna play for the dolphins, I see a lot of haters in this section, there’s isn’t one team in the league that wouldn’t give up a late third round pick and a third string player for Jalen Ramsey

PfF rated #3 corner in all of football

    All pro in 2021

I’m out head coach, his ability to communicate with his players is getting a strong reputation

So stop hatin, and show some respect for how we’re building a team

  61. The Bills split with Miami this year and won by 3 in the playoffs….with no Byron Jones, Brandon Jones and a few other pieces in that secondary that were lost for the season. The #2 CB for a majority of this past season was a undrafted rookie from Texas AM Commerce.

Ramsey just needs to be better than what we had with a DC who isn’t doing it for the first time.

This is a 2 year proposition and with Byron contract gone now, it makes sense.

  62. Dolphins still should look at bringing back Bobby McCain. He had success in Miami previously. Should come fairly discounted at this point and can play all over the secondary. Kohou was a good surprise and should take another step next year. Crossen is a special teams guy who can play some snaps. McCain is a decent cover who can play special teams as well, biggest thing? He’s durable. We need this especially with all the injuries last season.

  63. Isn’t the point of free agency and the draft to make your team better than it was the previous season? Is Ramsey not an upgrade over Byron Jones (Even when he’s not hurt)? Giving up a 3rd round pick (In which the Dolphins received from the Patriots for Devonte Parker, Thanks Pat Nation!) and a third string tight end that caught one pass in two seasons is a STEAL for the Dolphins. Between Vic Fangio and now Jaylen Ramsey the Dolphins are a better team than they were the previous season.
