All quiet on the Aaron Rodgers front

Earlier today, Trey Wingo touched off a firestorm by claiming that Aaron Rodgers to the Jets is a done deal. And we’ve indeed heard the same thing.

But as Monday yields to Tuesday, there’s nothing official regarding Rodgers’s plans for 2023.

We’re still hearing that Rodgers plans to accept a trade to New York. But we know from experience that nothing is done until it’s done.

It could be as simple as Rodgers, who takes almost perverse pride in being able to say that no one who covers the NFL for a living knows what he’s going to do, using the power he has amassed over the Jets (who desperately want him) and the Packers (who desperately want to get rid of him) to insist that no one should say anything until the delicate genius grants them express written permission to do so.

So what will happen? He can’t pretend that the time for making a decision hasn’t come and gone beyond Wednesday, when the new league year begins and his massive contract for 2023 lands officially on the Green Bay books.

Expect something tomorrow or Wednesday. Expect silence until then, under the apparent mandate from Mr. Rodgers that he’s the one who will control all information as to the neighborhood he’ll inhabit in 2023.

The choices seem to be Jets or retire, unless he’s willing to activate for the ultra-awkward option and return to Green Bay. And given that retirement would cost nearly $60 million and relegate him to “special guest star” status for the Tom Brady Hall of Fame enshrinement weekend, don’t be surprised if Rodgers is, by the middle of the week, officially a Jet.

  1. Just like I said this morning and here we are at the end of the day with the same headline once again! The true question should read How much longer will Rodgers troll both the Jets and the Packers?

  2. I like Mike Florio’s show but Aaron isn’t leaving Green Bay. Sure the Jets cleared some cap room but they would have to clear $46 million more and what does the Jets roster look like after those cuts come through it’s probably not a roster that Aaron wants to be around.
I think the Packers overall roster is better than the Jets if they could add a vet WR they could be good next year. Say what you will I think getting to a second super bowl in Green Bay is something he values, Brett has two appearances and if Aaron leaves a segment will believe Brett was better because of that.

  3. Aaron Rodgers now qualifies to be a guest host on The View with all of the drama he’s stirring up.

  4. He is a Tuesday regular on the Pat McAfee show. He reveals it there or he should just retire. Get a spaceship and go live on the dark side of the moon.

  5. They’ve got the cap space and draft capital to sign Lamar and he’s right down 95. Just sayin’.

  6. Wouldnt be surprised if Rodgers has told his boys to hold on and wait for him to officially be a Jet. Wants the Packers to lose out on free agents.

I’d love for TB12 to walk into the Jets facility tomorrow.
    —————————-
He signed a 1 year contract extension last March with the Bucs. He’d still be under contract if he unretired.

  8. It’s becoming almost comical watching AR and his massive ego as he pulls the strings on a couple of multi-billion dollar organizations.

  9. All the networks should just stop talking/reporting about Rodgers. It’s clear he wants the attention and he enjoys dragging everyone around. So I say ignore him and let him be!

  10. Aaron doesn’t just want the big reveal, he’s taken McAfee’s ask to tell the world on his show. It’s all scripted. Rodgers will tease, they’ll take a commercial break or three and then they’ll need enough room for Pat to toss Aaron softball questions to attempt to repair his image and get Jets nation to fall in love with him – and that’ll take 20 minutes more. He thinks the world is waiting with baited breath.

I hope minutes after his announcement something big in the world will happen that’ll relegate Rodgers’ reveal to page 3 status.

  11. If Rodgers tries to go back to Green Bay he’ll be boo’ed by the fans so much he’ll think he’s in Philly.

  12. I don’t think we should take Indy or Washington off the list. Have they done the vet QB thing? Yes. Have they had a vet QB as good as Rodgers? No.

  13. I’d love to see Rodgers stay in Green Bay and have the Jets scramble to either pay Lamar Jackson $250 million guaranteed or go back to the bust Zach Wilson.

  14. Teddy shore didn’t Jets go into Lambeau last year and dominate with Zach Wilson? I think the roster is fine.

  15. Anyone who thought Aaron Kardashian would announce at exactly Noon EST… or anytime today, hasn’t been paying attention.

  16. Or maybe there’s some little hangup in the teams sorting out what to exchange in the trade. For all we know, Rodgers is gung-ho and it’s team execs who are holding it up by haggling over some small points.

    ——————————————————————————————–

You don’t understand the salary cap. Under his current contract, Rodgers would be a bargain for the Jets (at least in their 2023 salary cap) at a hit of less than $16 million.

  18. The deal has been settled otherwise the Jets would be making plays for another veteran, e.g., Jimmy G.
The holdup may be Rodgers wants to take some Packer free agents with him and: 1) they have to decide if they want to go; and 2) they and the Jets have to figure out the compensation. None of this is quick or easy…

  19. Rodgers own words from January prove he is a liar. He is holding Packers and Jets hostage.

  20. you are ALL here for it even if you say you don’t care, you LOVE being played by the best in the game – how can you say you don’t enjoy it if you read this?

  21. The Packers and the Jets by themselves cannot hammer out a deal for Aaron Rodgers – because Aaron more than likely holds ALL the cards – including compensation for his services. If he indeed is going to play for the Jets, why should he allow his new team to be gutted of high draft picks for no apparent reason? They can use those high picks for drafting good players for their own Super Bowl run. Aaron can simply inform the Packers that he will accept a trade to the Jets only if the Jets must give up perhaps one draft choice – maybe say a seventh rounder. And, if the Packers don’t like it well, then he’ll be showing up to camp in Green Bay sometime in late July along with his 60 million dollar guaranteed contract. Why didn’t the front office trade him a year AFTER they foolishly gave up two picks to draft Jordan Love? Perhaps they discovered Love wasn’t ready to start going into his second year? Instead, they all run out to California one by one to tell Aaron how much they loved him. Aaron for sure was ticked off at Gutekunst for the way he was running the front office – so … the only way to get him back was to tear up the remaining 3 years on this contract, and give him a new, big fat 3 year deal with ironclad guarantees even though it then overlapped with Love’s remaining contract. And now – their stupidity is coming back to haunt them. For some reason, the media is hell bent on blaming everything on Rodgers, while allowing the Packer front office to skate by blame free. Believe me, there are plenty of us Packer fans who have suffered through this mess, and think otherwise. The culprit IS NOT Aaron Rodgers.

  22. Why ruin one teams free agency when you can ruin two? – Aaron Rodgers, probably

  23. “delicate genius”

““special guest star” status for the Tom Brady Hall of Fame enshrinement weekend.”

Daggers!. I wonder how Green Bay fans feel about this?

“All out Of Love” by Air Supply comes to mind.

  24. If I’m the Jets, 10am Tuesday morning you have 24 hours (10am) eastern time to give an answer otherwise bye. Let the Packers deal with him and his drama…I think he is bluffing anyway.

Nah, the Packers don’t want him, period. That bridge has been burnt to the ground.

  26. It would be classic, petty, arrogant Aaron to wait until GB has that massive cap hit before accepting a trade. He won’t do anything until it benefits him more than the other parties involved.

  27. Please retire. The drama of the Jets being hung out to dry and GB having to start Love with two middle fingers to Rogers all mixed with the image of him doing psychedelics and cutting out to the sunset wearing a man-bun is all I can take. Soap opera for men.

  28. Of course Rodgers is playing us, but he is entitled to. Favre was a diva too, but he was awfully good– 62 k fans showed for Farve. I like GB for Rodgers.

  29. He’s probably having second thoughts. AFC East is stacked! Packers have better coaching, offensive line, playmakers, and he wouldn’t have to pay that ridiculous New Jersey tax. Only was he goes to the Jets is if they offer him an insane contract.

  30. Rodgers is like the scary-movie villain who can’t quite kill the heroine but also who himself never really dies. It’s never a blockbuster but just enough people
love horror shows that we keep getting groan-worthy sequels.

When he retires to his permanent darkness retreat, I will likely throw a party.

  31. At this point they both lose. Both seem desperate. Both can’t do squat. And now the free teams are happily filling known gaps while these two fiddle. I feel bad for Green Bay. They should have freedom from owners like Dallas. But success from decentralized ownership shows weak to centralized “I care so much more” like Kraft. Recent history doesn’t erase 20yrs of focused love.

  32. Rogers ego seems to have grown exponentially these last few years. Not to mention he’s gotten a little weird, as well. The Packers were ready to move on, even if it meant using a QB that will likely be a bridge at best. The Jets are moving the right direction, but I feel like they’re not going to get what the think they’ll get with Rogers. In all likelihood it’s a one-and-done season for Rogers and the J-e-t-s. (see Brett Favre)

  33. No one, absolutely no one, associated with the Packers has ever said that the team desperately wants to get rid of AR. Not Murphy, regardless of what some have tried to read into his recent interview. Not Gute, and certainly not Coach LaFleur. The only person who has ever said this is the disgraced “journalist” McGinn.

Really? After that horrendously embarrassing season? Misguided hero worshipping at it’s best. Underthrows, overthrows and throw aways so you won’t get hit. Just awful. Brady knew it was time and it’s time you realize that too.

  35. Maybe Rodgers is waiting for the Jets to make good on promises to bring in his chosen free agents?

  36. Florio, take a deep breath and R.E.L.A.X. It will happen when it happens and is not in your control.

  37. teddyshore says:
I like Mike Florio’s show but Aaron isn’t leaving Green Bay. Sure the Jets cleared some cap room but they would have to clear $46 million more…
    //////////////////////////////////////////
According to an earlier Florio article… If/when the Jets acquire Rodgers, they’ll undoubtedly exercise a $58.3 million option bonus, reducing his 2023 cap charge from $59.465 million to $15.74 million.

  38. The mere mention of his name in the media is enough to satisfy his ever growing ego.

  39. What are the chances that Rodgers becomes a Jet, has a terrific season and then gets pummeled in the Super Bowl by Jordan Love and the Packers?

  40. He never wanted to go to the jets, he don’t wanna leave greenbay, he was hoping the talk about the jets would make greenbay beg for him to stay, and that has not happened, greenbay has moved on from him and now he screwed himself, and he knows it, plus most other teams now have a qb, so he has no place to go…

  41. Enough already until he signs with somebody. Diva to the highest power!

  42. Russ gets his office, Tommy had his own personal trainer. If the jets want answer, they have to sweeten the deal that speaks Aaron’s language.

Give him his own personal sweat lodge and shaman at the facility. Done deal.

  43. The Jets are cooked if this falls apart. The top free agents are gone and the top 4 QBs will be gone by the 13th pick.

  44. The best “Packer” move of the off season was the retirement of Tom Brady because it totally removed the prospects of Rodger’s retirement. In essence, it opened the door for the trade that is about to happen next. The Packers can offically beign the Jordan Love era, get some draft picks on which to build and begin the painful process of clearing Rodger’s contract off their books. There is a cap hit to take so let’s get it out of the way and move on.

  45. He’s trolling both these teams at a critical time. Moves are being made and both these teams can’t do anything but wait. Jimmy G is gone and they let Carr go in hopes of Aaron…better be careful Jets. I’d put a hard deadline. By 10am today. As the day poo or get off the pot.

  46. All quiet when you write about it every day? Reminds me of The Onion headline. Favre Holds press conference to announces next press conference.

  47. If AR really can’t decide by now then he’s not all in. If he does know & is deliberately keeping teams in limbo then they should move on without him as he’ll cause too much drama. Given what he’s going to cost for one season, maybe two at most then I don’t think Jets should move on while they have the chance & GB should make clear that if their stuck with him they’ll bench him for JL, take it or leave it.

  48. Maybe he’s just waiting to see if Wheel of Fortune, Price is Right or Family Feud need new hosts before he commits to another season like last years Jeopardy debacle?

He threw for over 1000 more yards last season than Lamar has thrown for in any season. He also had more TD passes. If that was horrendous, then what does that say about Lamar?

  50. That guys is walking into a buzzsaw. He clearly has no idea. Why would you go to the Jets fo the last season of your career?

  51. If AR really can’t decide by now then he’s not all in. If he does know & is deliberately keeping teams in limbo then they should move on without him as he’ll cause too much drama. 52. It is insane to see Aaron Rodgers go from one of the most fun, entertaining and a guy you turn the TV on no matter what for kind of quarterback. To an annoying, self centered ego maniac who has stretched out his “anger” and “decision” of whether or not to play for over 3 years. Its embarassing. It should be embarassing to him and the Packers and I know on some level Robert Saleh absolutely hates the begging and courting they have had to do for him just to get him to possibly come to the Jets.

Favre before 2007 was always known in a positive light and as a gunslinger. I think now people remeber Favre for the disaster that was the last 3 years of his career, excluding 2009. Now hes known for much worse, but before that Favres last three years left a horrible taste in everyones mouth. I think Rodgers is going to top that by 10fold. These last 3 years have been painful to watch from a far. From whatever the hell that was in training camp in 21, to the playoff losses to everything. It is really sad to see from one of the greats of this generation.

  56. Favre before 2007 was always known in a positive light and as a gunslinger.
    ==========

There was a lot to like, but not everything was positive.

2001, 2003 and 2004, he literally ended the Packers seasons due to his propensity for turnovers.

2005 Ted Thompson went into rebuild mode, Favre didn’t do anything to help.. 29 INTs

It was pretty clear Brett could not get his team back to the Super Bowl. 2007 reinforced that 100%, his final pass was a season-ending INT

The same can’t be said for Rodgers at this point. There isn’t a distinct pattern of failure. He’s a year removed from playing, arguably, his best football.

It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if a motivated Rodgers shredded this League for 3 more years. I don’t think we could say that about ol’#4 in 2008.

  57. billh1947
LOL. That’s delusional. First off, it’s “role”, not “roll”
Secondly, Aaron Rodgers is NEVER, repeat NEVER going to be a backup QB anywhere.
He will retire before that happens.
A guy with an ego like that?

  58. Didn’t Aaron Rodgers signed his current contract on March 15, 2022?
I believe the NFL requires him to wait 12 months before renegotiating the contract.
We may very well be waiting until tomorrow before he signs the new contract that he negotiated with the Jets.

Brett played on better teams. Its really not close.

From the moment they signed Reggie, they were a top 10 defense. 1994-1997, they were top 5. 1996 they were #1.

Rodgers has played with 1 top 5 defense… the year they won the Super Bowl.
