The Falcons are bringing in a player their head coach is plenty familiar with.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Atlanta is acquiring tight end Jonnu Smith from New England in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick.

The trade cannot become official until the new league year begins on Wednesday.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith was Jonnu Smith’s position coach for the tight end’s first two seasons. Then Arthur Smith became Tennessee’s offensive coordinator and called plays for the tight end’s next two seasons.

The same year Arthur Smith became the Falcons head coach, Jonnu Smith headed to New England as a free agent. In 14 games last season, smith caught 27 passes for 245 yards with no touchdowns.

Jonnu Smith’s most productive year with the Titans was in 2020 when he caught 41 passes for 448 yards with eight TDs.

In six seasons, Smith has 169 catches for 1,841 yards with 17 touchdowns.

By trading Smith, the Patriots will save $4.4 million against the cap.

Albert Breer of SI.com reports the Falcons will restructure Jonnu Smith’s contract.

  1. Patriots took an L on signing Smith but dumping his salary? That’s a W no matter what they got back.

  2. Taking a dead cap hit of 13M to save 4.

Tells you all you need to know about what they thought of him. Thank u, next.

  3. Dead cap hit this year but off the books completely in 2024.

Bad signing but like they did with Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee on the coaching staff they admitted their mistake and will try to correct it.

  4. BB always moves on quickly from a mistake and then fixes it, as opposed to other teams constantly continuing to play the player to jusify the original move.

Anyone know if Lamar Jackson has been dealt yet? lol

  5. Falcons already have Pitts so it’s interesting to see them take on this contract.

  6. And with this move the Patriots trim their payroll to drop to second most expensive receiver and tight end corp in the league.

Everyone else can say king me. BB is all about that check MATE.

  7. This must be one of those chess vs checkers moves am I right NE fans? Sign TE to big money and then realize failure and flip him for a 7th. That’s chess right? Lol.

  8. This salary dump of a bad signing not only saves 4.4 mil this year, but 18 mil in cap space in 2024. Admitted a mistake and salvaged what they could, instead of carrying almost useless baggage.

A W no matter? It may save over $4 million from the $10 million cap hit, but it’s still going to cost $6 million for a player no longer on their roster. That’s a W in your books?

  10. The writing was on the wall last year when they restructured his contact. Thank God he was just stealing money that dude is a bum can’t run a route or block to save his life! he caught tds for the Titans because the box was always stacked for Henry, I’m glad they admitted they made a mistake and sent him packing.

  11. It’s too bad he didn’t get to a team that utilizes a TE in the pass game, and where he could emerge as a #1

  12. Now the Falcons have two very athletic tight ends that at one time looked like they would dominate the position in the NFL. Bill Belichick ruined the career of one and Arthur Smith ruined the career of the other. Apparently Smith is hoping he can really destroy them both by getting them together.

  13. 7th round pick??? Mismanaged by Patriots. Often the story with the Patts. Sign players and not use them appropriately

  14. Trust me, Smith will let Smith run the rock in Atlanta, like he did in Nashville. If they go for LJ, they will only throw 12 times a game …

Yes it is. This is just as much about 2024 as it is about this season. They eat the cap hit now and he is off the books for 2024. And of course they could structure new signings into that 2024 cap space.

    W.

And they found a taker for that contract.

Another TE that they won’t throw to? Makes sense.

    ==========

????? Hunter Henry was 3rd in receptions last year.

  18. Kyle Pitts has been MIA. He is way too talented to not dominate this league from the TE position.

  19. Belichick made a mistake signing Smith. He did what he could to rectify it. He always does.

Saying this trade is good for the team isn’t excusing the original signing.

Virtually every talking head said they would keep him because of the dead money hit. Bill, with O’Bien’s concurrence, said “no mas”.

    Agreed.

What’s done is done. THey corrected the mistake and now they can move on in a better position with that salary off the books.

  21. By the above comments you’d think the Patriots are the first team to blow a free agency signings. At least it’s fixed now.

  22. Jonnu was productive with Bailey Zappe. Mac Jones is struggling throwing his receivers open.
