With safety Tashaun Gipson staying in San Francisco, Jimmie Ward faced the prospect of once again playing slot cornerback. Instead, he’ll be playing for another team.

Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Ward will sign with the Texans. No terms have been reported.

Ward, a first-round pick of the 49ers in 2014, follows 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans to Houston. Ryan is in his first year as head coach there.

Ward moved to the slot last year at the team’s request. He didn’t rule out returning to the 49ers, even if it meant reprising that role.

In addition to any and all other factors, Ward is the latest player to trade the 13.3-percent individual tax rate in California for a state that charges no income tax whatsoever.

  1. Who can blame him? I live out here and pay well over 11% state taxes. I will be moving as soon as my kid is off to college.

  2. California slogan: “Taxing our way into prosperity.” In reality, like you pointed out, taxing people out of the state.

  3. Lots of Santa Clara FA’s choosing to leave the 49er’s. Could that be an indication that Shanahan is a detestable coach and a sign that they didn’t like how JG was treated?

  4. The Houston Texans need all the help they can get. Hopefully, many more good Players are headed to Houston. DeMeco Ryans has his work cut out for himself. No State Income Tax in Texas does help!

  5. I called this one several days ago. My guess is he got $8-10 million, perhaps a 3 year deal with $23 million guaranteed.. We’ll see.. The Texans will be a lot better this coming season.. Watch the kid from Stanford get the nod at QB and play really well. In the mean time they draft a QB with their #2 pick..
