Report: Jonathan Jones to re-sign with Patriots

Cornerback Jonathan Jones didn’t need much of a chance to hear from other teams before deciding where he wants to sign as a free agent.

A few minutes after the window to negotiate with teams opened, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Jones is expected to sign a two-year deal to remain with the Patriots. Jones is ranked No. 27 on PFT’s list of the top free agents in the league.

Jones joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and he’s been a regular on defense for several seasons. He started all 16 games he played during the 2022 season and finished the year with 69 tackles, four interceptions, one interception return for a touchdown, and three forced fumbles.

A new deal sets Jones up for many chances to add to those totals in New England.

UPDATE 1:47 p.m. ET: Rapoport reports it is a two-year deal worth $20 million with $13 million guaranteed.

  1. Surprising. That’s a good “keep” by New England. I was hoping he’d move to a non-division team.

  2. As I said before, if he re-signs it’s a great move. If not, BB knows EXACTLY what he’s doing.

  3. Awesome! Big for the locker room, too. The best nickel still in his prime.

“no one wants to play for BB”

    lol

  4. This deal is a precursor to his move to FS as the heir apparent to McCourty
Great deal all the way around

  5. “no one wants to play for BB”

$20 million with $13 million guaranteed for a 29 yr old, and not a top CB.

    BB desperately needs him.

There are 30 CBs making more money than Jones. His avg is 7 million a year

They didn’t pay him “top cb” money.

As usual, you don’t have a clue

  7. They didn’t pay him “top cb” money.

When did I say he was paid “top CB” money from BeliCHEAP? I said the contract is NOT cheap.

He’s not even close to the best slot corner.

    Who said he was?
Teams with more than one or two players who are considered #1 or so at their respective positions have a difficult time winning Super Bowls because in the cap era it usually takes positional balance to win. So you need the Jonathan Jones and the Patrick Petersons if you’re going to pay others TOP money. It’s just common sense. And if you get enough of these Guys playing beyond expectations you just might make it to the SB. And is that the goal…

At that price yeah, thats a good deal on a good player. Those numbers are total contract not per year.

His birthday is 9/20, meaning, he will be 30 when he plays the 3rd game of the season, and he was on IR after 6 weeks in 2021.

It is not cheap, given 2/3 of the contract was guaranteed.

29 might not be at the start of a career career, but its not when it ends either. He has plenty of career left for playing out this contract strong. Its not that long a contract and is ‘good player’ money, but not elite money or anything over the to. Its actually less than a great many others at his position. . You are trying overly hard to spin this like he’s getting paid some new record setting contract while past retirement age, but thats just personal agenda driven nonsense. This was a good smart signing that makes the team stronger and I suspect thats the real reason you hate it so.
