Lions propose allowing a third coach’s challenge if either of the first two is successful

The Lions want coaches to have more opportunities to challenge missed calls.

A proposal submitted to the league by the Lions would allow coaches to make a third challenge if either of the first two challenges is successful. Under current NFL rules, a coach can only throw his challenge flag a third time if both of his first two challenges are successful.

The Lions’ proposal would still limit challenges at a maximum of three per team per game; a coach could not throw a fourth challenge flag even if all three of his previous challenges were successful.

As with all rule changes, this would require a three-fourths majority, or 24 of the NFL’s 32 teams, to pass.

  1. The bigger issue for me is that some things can’t be challenged, whether its 2 or 3 challenges I’d like to see all calls/missed calls be reviewable. The sky judge has helped in this regard but there have been instances where bad calls are slipping through.

  2. Or….maybe the league could fix poor officiating and not leave it to coaches to have to get it right and delay the game with dumb challenges that take 7 times longer for whatever reason. College football interrupts too much so it’s not ideal but it’s better than the goofiness of the NFLs current process. Isn’t the pro solution supposed to be better than the amateur one?

  3. Not a fan of limited challenges. As long as you have time outs to “pay” for a failed challenge your should be able to throw the flag. We’ve all witnessed games where the refs have blown more then 3 call against a specific team.

  4. Why not, the league doesn’t like to be embarrassed so admitting the refs were wrong twice is bad enough why would they let themselves look worse with a third time.

  5. Can we propose a rule where Mahomes doesn’t get preferential treatment and calls?

  6. With all the issues surrounding officiating in recent years, hard to argue against this.

  7. Good plan. There’s nothing fans love more than watching two zebras stand by a video monitor for 5 minutes. That’s the real stuff.

  8. So in essence we’re allowing up to 6 questionable calls per game, maybe we need better referees

  9. If the goal is to get the calls right, this makes plenty of sense. Punishing them for getting one challenge wrong (when even the experts can’t always agree on when something should be overturned) is silly. Of course if they used “the eye in the sky” they wouldn’t end up needing so many challenges.

  10. If you have a time-out, you should be able to challenge regardless of how many challenges you have won/lost previously.

  11. This makes total sense. You give me two challenges. If I correctly challenge, why should I lose one of them?

Good post. There’s nothing fans love more then watching their team lose a game because they are unable to challenge an obvious bad call. That’s the real stuff, lol.

  13. You can’t limit coaching challenges to 3 when the officials routinely make more than 3 errors.

  14. Just let teams challenge any play as long as they have timeouts to pay for failed challenges!

  15. It shouldn’t come down to having to ask for more coaches challenge reviews. The NFL should have folks in the press box monitoring every play for obvious officiating errors. There’s too much money and prestige on the line for teams, players and the food/beverage/hotel service businesses in NFL cities to be lackadaisical about it.

  16. There should be one challenge where you can challenge anything, not confined to the challenge rules.

By that logic they should probably review every play. An uncalled holding penalty is a bad call and your team could lose because of it. After every play they should stop the game and have a team of people meticulously review every player to see if the refs missed something. How else could you possibly avoid watching your team lose a game due to a bad (or uncalled) penalty? They would have to start games at noon, 5 and 930 to accommodate the new length of games of course, but that’s the price you pay if you want a fair game right?
