Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that the team is releasing running back Ezekiel Elliott as the new league year gets underway.

A report on Wednesday indicated that Elliott was already informed of the move, which Jones called “one of the toughest parts of operating a team” in a statement released shortly after the official start of the league year. Jones said that the franchise “will always have a special place and love” for Elliott after seven seasons in the organization.

“Zeke’s impact and influence is seared into the Cowboys franchise in a very special and indelible way,” Jones said. “He has been a consummate professional and leader that set a tone in our locker room, on the field and in the huddle. Zeke defined what a teammate should be, and anyone that has ever played a team sport would be lucky to have a teammate like Zeke and be much better for it. . . . He wore the Cowboys Star with pride and purpose every single time he put it on, and we’re a better franchise because of the example he set for veterans and rookies alike.”

Elliott will be a free agent as soon as the move is officially processed and the Cowboys will be moving on with Tony Pollard as soon as Pollard signs his franchise tag or agrees to a long-term deal with the team.

  1. Seahawks need to draft and/or get one or two FA RB’s to replace the losses in FA, thus far. Elliot would make a huge difference in the run game if he came to Seattle to be part of the 1-2, run first, punch. Not sure why that wouldn’t be on the horizon to explore, but sure due diligence will be observed by John/Pete.

  2. Thanks for it all Zeke. Great player and professional and a very nice guy in person. Best of luck

  3. For past few years Zeke was stomping ants like a PGA Senior Tour Golfer preparing to tee off. A slow plodding process.

  4. Yep, he was so special and made such an impact, he played center as his last snap as a Cowboy.

  5. Yes, Jerry! All those playoff wins, all those SB appearances. Thanks Zeke, we’ll never forget you!

  6. So as a fan of the east never feared that guy, Emmet, Riggins, OJ Anderson, shoot back to 33. He got paid so bless up

  7. Jerry speaks from the heart regarding the impact Zeke did within the Cowboys organization during his maturity process.

  8. For a 3 to 4 year span Elliot earned every penny and was a beast to bring down. Like most abused runners, it ended quickly.

  9. Zeke should be seared into Jerry’s memory for conning Jerry to give him a new contract a year earlier than he needed to—not that Jerry could have read the writing on the wall if it was written in neon lights.

  10. Will always be remembered for being the center on his last play.. HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYs!!!

  11. The single greatest player to ever come from the planet Endor. For years people thought Ewoks were too small and slow but Zeke proved them wrong.

  12. Getting paid for declining production certainly does seem seared into the Cowboys.

  13. Used up and discarded. The way of the NFL, especially the Cowboys…

Reminds me of what longtime Cowboy GM Tex Schramm said to Gene Upshaw during labor negotiations: “What you don’t understand is that we are the ranchers and you (the players) are the cattle. And we can always get more cattle…”

  14. Lot of negative chatter about Zeke. Yeah, the big contract was a mistake, and he “lost a step,” but he was an old-school baller who loved his team, was a leader in the locker room, and produced in more ways than most knew. For one, he was an excellent blocker on 3rd down; as good as Pollard is, he’s not good at protecting his QB in those situations. And Zeke made some amazing plays out of nothing his last couple of years. He played when hurt and was always a good receiver. He was a positive presence on the team. I’m disappointed the Cowboys couldn’t work out something with him. I disagree with people that say he was selfish or self centered. Just the opposite. I wish him well in his next stage.

  15. Once again Blah Blah Blah Jerry speaks again and says nothing this guy is the king of Word Salad. Maybe as GM Lol he should change the slogan to America’s Joke

  16. Held out. Got huge contract. Production declined ever since. Yep. That will definitely leave a mark.

And just what, exactly, do you want them to do?

From what I could find, the Cowboys have paid Zeke $61 million for his time there. The guy is *27 years old*. He may be “used up” as a professional football player but he has most of his life ahead of him and should have a significant fortune, so he has an incredible opportunity to live his life’s dreams as he sees fit. It’s worth remembering the things he did for the team and to note his play will be missed, but don’t say he got shafted or try to tell us we should be feel sorry for him.
