Commanders coach Ron Rivera repeatedly has expressed confidence in Sam Howell, who made his first career start as a rookie in Week 18 last season. Rivera calls Howell QB1 but stopped short of guaranteeing Howell will start the 2023 season opener.

Jacoby Brissett could start Week 1.

The Commanders agreed to terms with Brissett on Wednesday, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.

Brissett ranks 64th on PFT’s list of top-100 free agents.

Brissett, 30, has started games for four teams in his seven seasons since the Patriots made him a third-round pick.

He played for the Browns last season, and while filling in for Deshaun Watson while Watson was suspended, Brissett started 11 games. He went 236-of-339 for 2,608 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

  1. And yet another horse in the Lamar Jackson Derby has pulled out of the race. Dolphins, Raiders, Texans, Saints, 49ers, Panthers, Pats and now the Commanders have all decided that guaranteeing upwards of a quarter of a billion dollars, giving up draft picks and having to blow up half their offensive team to change from pocket passer to running QB doesn’t make sense.

  2. So WFT signs the other Mr. Mediocre (the other one is Bridgewater). Give Howell a shot, then, if necessary, draft a replacement in 2024.

  3. Jakoby is tough. I love Heineke too but this is good. Draft a third guy that EB likes. Sam Howell should not have been a 5th rounder. All good👍👍

  4. That’s a good no-nonsense acquisition for the Washington Team. No need to overspend bringing in some over-hyped underwhelming guy like they usually do. Give Howell every chance to become “The guy”, and have a solid, if unspectacular guy behind him just in case. They don’t usually make this much sense, so this is a positive if you’re a Washington fan.

  5. It’s just a weird path for the Commanders to take. They bypassed on better options, including Lamar, so they can develop Howell. That’s what this move is all about, developing Howell—bringing in a backup who Howell should easily beat out. Problem is, if Howell doesn’t step up, Brissett is the starter. He’s not Geno, rather he’s had plenty of starts on multiple teams. We know what Brissett is. I think the odds favor Washington being below .500.

  6. Weird. I think the Taylor/Rivera relationship went sour after the Cleveland game debacle last year. They kept it professional, but it was done. No way Brissett is a better fit than Taylor to backup Howell. Rivera wanted to move in from Taylor, knowing that he’s a fan favorite. Let’s wait for the contract to come in – I’m sure it’s close to Taylor’s Atalanta deal for 1-year.

  7. Smart signing, WFT! If the Browns had any moral compass they’d be starting Brissett right now instead of a serial abuser. I predict Washington will do better than the Browns.

  8. He went 236-of-339 for 2,608 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Those are Lamar Jackson numbers. Someone should explain this to Lamar

  9. Commanders having a solid offseason so far. Good signing as both Taylor and DC needed a split, and Jacoby is a solid pickup. You can’t just give Sam the starting job. He needs to earn it. Now lets have a good draft.
