Baker Mayfield bets on himself, again

It’s been a strange two years for Baker Mayfield.

After an unexpected playoff appearance, a wild-card win in Pittsburgh, and a close, tough loss to the Chiefs in the 2020 playoffs, the signs were pointing to Mayfield receiving a franchise-quarterback contract.

Now, the potential Tampa Bay starter is guaranteed low-level backup quarterback pay.

Mayfield’s contract has a $2 million guaranteed base salary, and a $2 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year. That’s it for the base package.

He can make up to $4.5 million more based on playing time, regular-season playing time, and passing stats. The specific triggers have not yet been disclosed.

Last year, Mayfield made a major bet on himself, trading in a guaranteed $19.9 million base salary with the Browns for a much lower guaranteed payment. He’s making a bet for a second straight year, wagering on spending the 2023 season proving himself to be a starter in the NFL.

Either way, it’s a great deal for the Buccaneers. They get Mayfield for relative peanuts, as they transition away from Tom Brady. And if Mayfield plays well, he’ll get a lot more than $4 million in 2024.

  1. Say what you want about Mayfield, but this is what you do when you believe in yourself. Unlike the guy in New Orleans just talks about believing he’s a Super Bowl QB.

  2. Baker Mayfiled blows. He can bet on himself all day long, a dumb team can sign him and waste their money for now and the rest of eternity.

He’s a failed bust who duped the Browns and others into thinking he was the real deal. He stinks.

    End of discussion.

  3. Let me set the stage for you Bucs fans. Prepare for Baker to come up small in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line. Prepare for a lot of batted balls and bone headed interceptions. This will be mixed in with just enough good play that you will believe he is about to breakout very soon. But it will never happen and before you know it, you will look up and see your team is 7-10.

  4. “And if Mayfield plays well, he’ll get a lot more than $4 million in 2024.”

    That’s a big if.

  5. Baker is a gamer and a QB who has proven he can get a team to the playoffs and win playoff games. He was over-drafted as the first overall pick for sure. He’s not a franchise guy. He is a mid-tier starting quarterback who can win help a good roster make the playoffs. He’s Derek Carr if Carr ever won a playoff game. He’s Andy Dalton in his prime. He’s Joe Flacco.

  6. Good for him. I’m not sure I’d take the bet, but it’s good for the game when players believe in and bet on themselves.

Or he is just an arrogant jerk who believes his failures are someone else’s fault. His agent needs to be decertified.

  8. I never really cared for Mayfield coming out of college but I think him being humbled a bit has shown him a better perspective of who he needs to be, I kinda hope now he succeeds

  9. What can I say? He’s going to have to shop at Walmart instead of Whole Foods.

  10. Petulant quarterback who isn’t very good on a dysfunctional team with an awful coach? My money is on the obvious outcome.

  11. Sounds like Baker has a gambling problem. His family needs hold an intervention asap. Show him his pro football focus grade and QBR to show he has hit Rock bottom.

  12. Glad he is willing to sign a lessor contract and try to prove he is a starter. Sitting out won’t do it. I hope he plays so well, TB ends up starting him and pays him his incentives.

  13. All you browns fans seem to forget we had Winston. And if Baker beats out Trask no egg in Licht’s face, that what a first round pick should do.

  14. Not against Baker at all and it’s looking like TB has fully come to the conclusion that Trask isn’t “it” and will always be a backup QB.

Not a bad deal for TB – Baker is basically on a very cheap “prove it” deal. Don’t stink, win the NFC South pillow fight, and maybe get a better deal. Hardly any risk for TB, and who knows – maybe he won’t stink.

  15. Getting a 7-10 record this season? as a buc fan I would take it without hesitation.

  16. The word is that Baker lives off of his Progressive money and hasn’t touched one dime of his NFL money.

  17. Just like 1 catch made OBJ apparently good, there is 1 throw that particularly sticks out in my mind that forever changed my mind that Baker Mayfield is really bad. Ironically, that throw was to OBJ when he missed a wide open shot by 20 yards. He’s bad. You can bet on that.

  18. Baker Mayfield wishes he was an Andy Dalton. Instead, Mayfield is barely better than Tim Tebow or Johnny Manziel. Baker should seek out Jon Kitna or Mark Brunell to help up his game.

  19. Baker Mayfields bet was the equivalent of having a 20 in blackjack and still asking for more cards. Had he just kept his mouth shut instead of having a temper tantrum that Cleveland did not commit to him for 2023 he would have been Clevelands starter in 2022 and could have just walked in free agency and still had been seen as a day 1 starter. Instead he demanded out thinking there was going to be teams breaking down the door for him and instead bombed on multiple teams while his replacements all did better and is now stuck taking journeyman deals to try to stay in the league. There’s betting and then there’s smart betting. He definitely needs to make more smart bets than what he has.

  20. it’s not unheard of for a veteran to struggle for a few years, and then figure it out. obviously, Geno Smith is the most recent example.
I’m pulling for Mayfield to do well. He’s an exciting QB, even when he plays poorly.

I’m not sure why that playoff appearance was “unexpected” – Baker and the team played well that season. He had no picks in the last 9 games of the regular season, and they were only a bad non-call at the goal line (and an underperforming defense) away from beating KC.

I know a lot of people don’t like Baker, and I understand a lot of it, but he was drafted by a team that had gone 1-31 and they improved immediately with him under center (I know he didn’t start right away). He also played under 4 different HCs in his first 4 years. Anyone who thinks that doesn’t nerf a young QB’s development is delusional.

Regardless, getting the team to the 2nd round of the playoffs, then playing most of the next season severely injured (and they still went 8-9 – remember, 1-31!) he suddenly wasn’t good enough for the team that drafted him #1.

I’m a long-suffering Browns fan. Our ownership is maybe the worst in the league, and that greatly impacts our ability (or inability) to find success or consistency. Baker isn’t perfect and he won’t carry a team, but he can be a fine starter if the pieces around him are decent.

Baker wasn’t the problem and Watson isn’t the solution. The issues run much deeper than who’s behind center. I’m rooting for Baker.

  22. Baker Mayfield is Teddy Bridgewater 2.0. Flashes of good sprinkled over consistently bad play.

  23. Unfortunately the OL isn’t going to be much help, so the “offense” is going to be snap the ball and run for your life, repeat, repeat, punt. The defense may have to score some points.
