New Colts head coach Shane Steichen will have at least one quarterback familiar with his system in 2023.

Gardner Minshew has agreed to terms with Indianapolis, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media. The deal is expected to be worth $3.5 million with more money available through incentives.

Minshew spent the last two seasons with the Eagles, where Steichen served as his offensive coordinator. In 2022, Minshew started two regular-season games, but lost both. In five appearances, Minshew completed 58 percent of his passes for 663 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Minshew came on the scene as a rookie sixth-round pick, going 6-6 as a starter with Jacksonville. But after the Jaguars drafted Trevor Lawrence in 2021, they traded him to the Eagles to be the team’s backup.

In 32 appearances with 24 starts, Minshew has completed 63 percent of his passes for 6,632 yards with 44 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

The Colts currently hold the No. 4 overall pick in this year’s draft and are widely expected to select a quarterback. Minshew gives Indianapolis some flexibility if that rookie quarterback is not ready to start Week One.

  1. I hope he starts for the whole year next season. I always felt this guy hasn’t gotten a fair chance to be a QB for a team and I am interested to see what he can do when given the chance.

  2. I guess it’s always a gamble when trying to figure out the most likely place to get a starting opportunity. Here, it seems a safe bet the Colts will draft a QB, so he may be counting on getting time as they bring the rookie along slowly. But even so, he’ll be doing it on a dodgy team where the clock is ticking to get the new guy in. And then he’ll be a backup on a bad team instead of on a great team.

  3. Makes sense to move on for both sides. The Eagles should look to someone who is like Jalen Hurts in the 5th or 6th round. Gardner Minshew is a decent player, but it is clear he couldn’t run the offense and they suffered when Hurts was injured.

I want to see Sam Ehlinger get a shot with the Colts, but this is probably the end. This feels like Minshew is the backup QB and they’ll surely take one with their pick.

  4. If you’re a competitive guy, like I’m sure Minshew is, you’d rather have a shot at being the starter on any team vs being the backup on a great team. That’s just how it would be, unless your name is Championship Starter Jameis Winston.

  5. He gives the Colts their best chance since what’s his name retired years ago.

  6. Great signing by the Colts. I love this dude big time he should start for them the whole year he’s better than Matty Ice right now.

    _____________

Jameis is going to earn 8 million dollars this season. I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t care if he is a backup.

  8. Good for him, he deserves a real shot to be qb1, he proved that back in his rookie yr when,if you look at his numbers, he should have been rookie of the year!

  9. Glad for him. Hopefully, he keeps competing for the top spot. He might beat out a rookie.
