Gardner Minshew is out. Marcus Mariota is in.

The Eagles have replaced Minshew, who will join the Colts, with Mariota.

Via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Mariota has reached agreement on a one-year, $5 million deal. Incentives can push the value to $8 million.

He was the second overall pick in the draft. After five years with the Titans, he spent two with the Raiders and one with the Falcons.

Still only 29, Mariota’s skillset meshes better with starter Jalen Hurts than Minshew’s. Mariota, like Hurts, possesses the kind of mobility that allows him to run the aspects of the offense that require the quarterback to run.

Mariota started 13 games for the Falcons in 2022. He was benched for rookie Desmond Ridder late in the year, prompting Mariota to leave the team.

He’s one of the three quarterbacks who were part of the season-long Netflix show focusing on the life of an NFL quarterback. It’s due to debut this summer, and it will give Eagles fans a chance to better get to know the player who becomes the new understudy to one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

  1. Circle complete….I remember how Chip Kelly wanted him, but wouldn’t sell the farm to get him.

  2. See, Chip? We just had to wait and we got Mariota for nothing. We didn’t need to offer three firsts and a young Fletcher Cox to move up.

  3. Super odd ending for him with Atlanta that wasn’t fully explained yet by media. Thought he had retired. Bizarre.

  4. This is a heck of a lot cheaper than the 2 first round picks Chip would’ve had to pay!

  5. You really think Hurts is one of the best? One good year on the best roster and now he is one of the best. Talk to me in two years.

  6. Remember all the “Jerry Jones” was right posts from earlier this week? LOL.

  7. He is an excellent backup.
If Hurts misses a couple of games, the Eagles are good enough to win with him.

  8. Dude was not ok with being benched for a rookie, but now its perfectly fine for him to be behind Hurts..what a joke. He can have tons of fun holding a clipboard.

  9. If you had told Mariota 3 years ago that a team would choose him over Garner Minshew entirely because he was cheaper, I wonder what he would have thought.

  10. As an Eagles fan, I don’t want this guy. He was never a starting caliber QB in this league and he quit last year after being benched because he sucks.

  11. I liked Marcus. He made a lot of mistakes in ATL and cost them some games but we knew who he was and the fans let him be him. Instead of being a well paid teammate and mentor, he seemingly quit. Quitting is an unforgivable act in my opinion. I wish him luck but PHI fans should pray for Hurts’ wellbeing.

  12. Another Oregon washout, that high school offense just won’t produce NFL caliber QBs

So, a QB has talent around him and succeeds. Isn’t that pretty much what EVERY team should strive for? Show me a successful QB with no weapons.

  14. This is a great signing for two reasons
    (1) Mariota is good enough to win a few games if you need him, particularly with that strong Eagles roster.
    (2) You can run the same playbook when he goes in. No switch from QB-threat-of-run dependent offense to pocket-passer only. The only difference I see is that Mariota runs are effective through deception and speed, while Hurts brings some power-runner aspects to it.

Fantastic signing and certainly will be one of the top backups in the league.

  15. Gardner Minshew should have his own reality show. A door closes. Another one opens.

Eagles fan here (since 1972), but…Jerry said the Eagles were all in for this year and would take a step back.

So far, the Eagles have brought back:

    a 30+ year old CB,
    a 30+ year old center,
    a 30+ year old DT
    a 29 year old CB
a frequently injured RB on the cheap

They have lost a young LB, a RB in his prime, a DT in his prime (to the team they had to face in the NFCCD), a safety with a bright future ahead of him (Epps), and have been unable to sign the 25 year old pro-bowl safety FA who would solidify the center of their defense for years to come.

On balance, it looks like Jerry was looking at the 11 FAs the Eagles were set to lose when he said what he said. And

How signing Mariota changes any of this is beyond me.

  17. I’d take Minshew over Mariota any day of the week,… maybe twice on sundays. Mariota isn’t very good. I was stunned ATL even signed him last year to replace Ryan. Minshew can actually throw passes on target.

Titans on line one calling for Gardner Minshew.

    —————————–

Given that he already signed with the Colts, I doubt the Titans will be calling unless its a phony phone call

  19. This move makes a lot of sense for everybody. Marcus knows coming in that he is not going to be the man and can instead work on being ready if they need him. Minshew might be a better QB than Marcus (which is debatable), but Marcus fits the system better allowing for a more seamless transition if he needs to play. $5M is cheap for a year and if they want they can pick up a QB later in the draft to develop (a QB room with Hurts and Mariota would be a GREAT place for a young QB to develop – spare me the crying and screaming about Marcus leaving Atlanta because plenty will be seen about Arthur Smith over the next year or so).

  20. Super odd ending for him with Atlanta that wasn’t fully explained yet by media. Thought he had retired. Bizarre.

What’s odd about it? He stunk, got benched, and the falcons wanted to see what their rookie QB could do.

  21. I watched every game Mariota played last season. He’s very good in the post-game press conferences being accountable for all of his mistakes, I’ll say that.

The eagles brought back an all pro corner who had a career year, pro bowl corner, all pro center who had the best season of his career and a veteran d tackle with 7 sacks.
And that d tackle we lost is 30 years old and is the 3rd highest paid at his position and d-line is arguably the deepest position on the team. The eagles have a former 3rd rounder who had 4 sacks with little playing time and a 1st rounder ready to get more playing time. That young lb we lost was a huge liability in pass coverage too.

  23. Love Minshew! Enjoyed his college play, and really hope he gets a long look with the right team. He has talent and skill, and needs a real chance.

You know what? I think this IS beyond you….
People who aren’t fans of Philly, stop talking for awhile, a little while…Keep wacthing… stay tuned, the Howie show is still running all the way to October and episode 2 starts for the push back into the tournament.
BTW, the bean town know it alls, won’t sniff a playoff next year. Bank it.

  25. Clearly a downgrade for Philly, and with all this change before the draft, it feels like they are getting perilously close to a meaningful setback.

But they’re in good shape for the draft and still have the best QB in the NFC (pending Rodgers’ move), and until SF rights the QB ship, are still the best team in the NFC.

  26. A Slight upgrade. How will still get a young QB in the draft or a post camp cut. HURTS is the guy. This is for a backup spot

  27. Howie making savy and cost effective moves while improving roster depth. Two first round picks from last year step into vacated spots. Two first round picks this year add talent on defense. Fly Eagles Fly

  28. I was very disappointed to see the Falcons waste the 2022 season on Mariota. I’m used to it now.

  29. Only people who didn’t watch any Falcons’ games last season are here saying the Eagles can run the same offense with him.

  30. Mariota has been since day 1, a bust…and he quit, literally, on his team last year. Subtraction by addition by the Eagles.
