Jamaal Williams: Lions made me a disrespectful offer

Before the start of free agency, running back Jamaal Williams said he hoped to remain in Detroit and Lions General Manager Brad Holmes said that the team also had interest in keeping the relationship going.

That shared interest did not result in a contract, however. Williams signed a three-year, $12 million contract with $8 million in guarantees with the Saints this week and the Lions added former Bear David Montgomery to their backfield.

During a press conference on Friday, Williams said that he didn’t feel the Lions’ stated interest in keeping him in Detroit was not reflected in the offer they made him.

“The offer they gave me, I felt like was disrespectful and showing that they really didn’t want me to be there like that,” Williams said, via Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.

Williams set a Lions record with 17 rushing touchdowns last season and outperformed expectations over his two seasons with the Lions. The Saints will be hoping for the same kind of productivity the next few years.

  1. “Williams set a Lions record with 17 rushing touchdowns last season…” Wow. That set a franchise record for rushing TDs?

  2. Feeling disrespected and being disrespected are not the same thing.

  3. Grow up and get over yourself. There are 31 other teams in the league if you’re not happy with the offer the Lions gave you.

  4. Wish the Lions could have kept him. He is a great player and all heart. He played really well for the Lions. But it is a business…
Hope his bruised feelings heal and wish him the best!

  5. “[H]e didn’t feel the Lions’ stated interest in keeping him in Detroit was not reflected in the offer they made him.” Two negatives make a positive. Thus: He DID feel the interest was reflected in the offer. It was low.

  6. The reality is he thought he was in for a huge payday and the Lions offered similar money that the Saints did. Once the Lions moved on and he realized the money he wanted wasn’t available he took the Saints offer. Rather then admit he overplayed his hand he decided to blame the Lions for not respecting him because they rightfully offered the younger, way better pass catching back in Montgomery more then they offered him.

  7. i wonder what the Lions were offering, if we did, we could judge what Williams considers a disrespectful offer…

  8. Maybe you just not worth what you think you greedy punk!

NFL players are so pig headed.

  9. So many of today’s athletes are all up in their feelings about everything. Does this guy think it’s personal? He doesn’t understand the business?

  10. Jamal ended up taking less money with the Saints. Looking like a bad decision. I only wish him well. David Montgomery benefits from Jamal’s mistake.

  11. it’s disrespectful to the fans (who pay your salary, and never forget that) to say that an offer whether it’s $1M or $10M per year is disrespectful…the world of entitlement is a disease.

  12. Good luck in New Orleans, Jamaal! We all understand you’re a player who performs best with a chip on his shoulder. We’ll, you’ll get no I’ll will from Lions fans.

  13. I can’t imagine they offered him much less if any than what they signed Montgomery for and Montgomery is making more than Williams.

My guess is he backed himself into a corner with demands/expectations and ended up taking less with the Saints.

  14. Man running backs get paid garbage compared to the rest of the offensive positions.

Back in my day (old man’s voice), the run game was the centerpiece of the offense. It started and ended with the run. But the onus has been put on money and greed, and now the we have this finesse brand of football. Man I miss the physicality of the old NFL. What a beautiful game it was (yoda voice).

  15. 3 years for $12 million was disrespectful. What did the Lions offer? 3 years for $8 million?

  16. Nothing but love for Jamaal – i’ll be a fan of his for the rest of his career no matter where he plays. With that said, I see they are paying more for Montgomery who is younger and is arguably a better runner. Lions may have only offered Williams a 1-year deal.

  17. Apparently the offer was two years for 12 million. Not sure about the guarantees but, one way, or the other, Jamal is probably regretting not taking the deal. It was good to have them in town, it might be better to have Montgomery.

  18. He was utilized in a way that any average RB would have scored 17 TD’s. Montgomery is a much better back. He won’t be whining about respect. He won’t have to. Respect is something you earn. If he’s not getting it, he should be talking to the man in the mirror.

  19. Lions offered him the same deal Montgomery got and he ended up taking less with the Saints. Not disrespectful from the Lions.

  20. Too good for the lions. He scored way to many times, not the lion way. That organization is a loser for these kind of reasons. Best of luck to him. He is a class act!

“Williams set a Lions record with 17 rushing touchdowns last season…” Wow. That set a franchise record for rushing TDs?
    ——-

Only 24 times in history of the league have scored more than that… and #25 and 26 are Jim Brown with 17.

  22. That tends to happen to players that only put out in their contract season, look at Sanders and how the Eagles sent him packing for futher proof! You’re a 500-600yd a season guy and last season was an anomaly, not the norm for you.

  23. Lions offered him the same deal they gave Montgomery. Williams ended up signing with NO for less than Detroit offered him. So if anything he disrespected the O line he ran behind last year. He’s not getting 17 scores on the Saints.

  24. LOL, Williams overplayed his hand and signed a lesser deal than what Detroit paid Montgomery. Loved his spirit when he was on the team, but he can take his tears to the Big Easy.

    Agreed, on all counts!

  26. The Loins know how much better Swift is…and is still on a rookie deal

  27. These comings and goings during the free agency period to a great extent looks and feels like a giant game of musical chairs.

  28. I don’t get why fans continually side with billionaires over players with short career spans trying to get what they can. In 2022, Swift was always hurt and Williams came through on the field and was a great locker room guy. In response to that performance and saying he wanted to continue with the Lions, they signed another RB and lowballed him. And now people are calling him a whiny millenial? Bet the same guys yell at folks to stay off their yard.

  29. Free agency is like the Grand Hotel: guests check in; guests check out. It’s a swirl of players in and out. Rearranging deck chairs for the press and for the fans. Only in a very few cases does it really amount to anything.

I beg to differ. NFL careers are short and every player can’t get a mega deal. It doesn’t mean they should except a low offer. No one commenting would accept a self perceived team’s low offer if another team offered more. The next time you’re looking for a raise just take what the job offers you even if you don’t like it.

  32. Normal folks haggle and negotiate pay for a few more dollars. Players are in a different income bracket. We shouldn’t talk down on them for wanting a few more hundred thousands or million.

  33. This guy is totally being obnoxious. These young kids have it so easy and act like they deserve millions for playing a silly sport. Very greedy and disheartening to say the least.

I beg to differ ur ridiculous defense. No one is looking for a raise when they already make millions of dollars c0rky! He already makes an obscene amount, he doesn’t need anymore and definitely doesn’t deserve anymore!

Your comment is as ridiculous as the one you slammed. Who made YOU the arbiter of how much money people need? You think rich people don’t always try to make more money? Because you think that they don’t need any more? Hahahahahahahah hahahahah.

  36. No issue with the Lions or their fans. Saints have done well with veteran RBs (Mark Ingram, Latavious Murray) over the years, and Williams will provide some balance to keep some of the focus away from Kamara (and be even more valuable if Kamara winds up going to jail). Welcome from WhoDat Nation!

  37. NFL salary cap is 224 million per team, divided by a 53 man roster, is 4.2 million per player on average. Running backs are getting screwed! Saints made a very wise move. Detroit, not so much.

While you bring up a good point, I think you missed the point.

He said: “He already makes an obscene amount, he doesn’t need anymore and definitely doesn’t deserve anymore!”

The guy isn’t worth the money nor deserves it at this point.

Hope you realize that NFL players are grossly overpaid for a fixed game that you can bet on.

  40. Smart move by the Lions. Running backs are cheap you should never overpay for one. Ask Dallas.

  41. Honestly Jamaal is good but not that great. Montgomery is such an upgrade in so many ways.

  42. Amazing how many people can type comments here while also telling people to get off their lawn and regaling their kids with stories of walking uphill to school both ways…

As far as I’m concerned ALL pro athletes are overpaid. My issue is with someone in the peanut gallery saying that someone doesn’t “need” more money. That’s a different argument than saying someone does or doesn’t “deserve” whatever money they ask for.
No one knows how much money it takes to make someone else happy.

Pull up a chair and join me on my lawn (w/ a beer) and let’s watch the Lions beat the Packers!

  45. If this story gets enough hype it could lead to a Prime Time Sunday Night or Monday Night showdown in N’awlins this season.

  46. Lion fan talk like they belong with the big boys. psssst, you didn’t make the playoffs with a RB that scored 17 TDS. Back to the basement kitties.

  47. Jamaal Williams has outperformed his contract every year. Detroit will miss him. But the whole idea of an offer being disrespectful is old and tired and a bad look for anyone.

  48. A lot of comments on here saying that the Lions offer was similar to the Saints offer, or similar to the Montgomery deal or whatever, and that Williams misjudged his market and had to settle for the Saints deal….

The same reporter who reported this also noted that “the Lions’ offer to Jamaal Williams was nowhere near what New Orleans gave him”

I’m not sure why people need to spin something a certain way without knowing the actual details.

  49. should have been a quarterback, or a receiver, or a tight end…
    .
honestly, running backs almost don’t deserve a second contract just because if the wear on the position.
    .
Rb rookie contracts should only last 2 year’s so they can get paid

  50. When he first got here he was talking about how Green Bay didn’t want him and how the Lions did, now this nonsense. I think it’s just what he does, an emotional person who plays with emotion but who also can’t put his emotions aside when it comes to business.

  51. Boo hoo! It’s called business. It’s not personal. Really, will someone please tell all these children “you can grow up if you try!” ???

  52. In all my years I’ve never met a respectable man say he was disrespected. I’ve heard plenty of whining, but not from anyone who was worthy of more respect than they were getting.

  53. Why exactly does this guy think he deserves so much respect? Because he can run and play football? There are some things you can’t buy with money and respect is one of them.

  54. So we offered him the same contract we gave David Montgomery, and he said no. Thanks 🙂

  55. His personality and locker room presence is great, from all reports. But watch his runs – he goes down at the first hit. Doesn’t break tackles. He ran well behind that offensive line. It will be interesting to see how he does with a different line this year. Montgomery broke tackles at a league-high rate, and had similar yards to Williams running behind an arguably league-worst O-line. It will be even more interesting to see how he does running behind one of the best lines in the NFL.
This reminds me of the argument about who was better – Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith. Smith had fewer yards per season, running behind the NFL’s best O-line. The Lions had marginal O-lines at best during that time. Now we get to see how much difference an O-line makes. I think this is a clear upgrade. Montgomery’s a better route runner and pass catcher too – so this, engaging personality aside, is an upgrade for the Lions. Why is there any doubt about this being the right path for them?

  56. Jamaal its simple. If yo momma has six kids instead of two there is less food to eat

  57. I’ve always like Williams but this act went from funny during hard knocks (just look up his awesome quote comparing the Packers to treating your Ex) and now he’s pulling the disrespect card against the Lions

  58. The lions offered Jamaal the same offer they did David Montgomery. Yet Jamaal says 3 years for $18 million is disrespectful but signs 3 years for $12 million in New Orleans. He did it to himself.

  59. The Lions offered him a contract similar to what Montgomery signed. JW and his agent at that point realized that they’ve done messed up and they quickly signed for less with the New Orleans.
